@@jc.1191 - My point is, if you can afford top of the line compressors, you can afford more than a 57. Of course some may use an inexpensive dynamic for a specific effect you're going for, but when talking about cost benefit, 57 into many thousands of dollars of outboard gear doesn't make sense.

That would be great back when we were tracking to analog multitrack. Today my process is to record digitally with high-quality microphones and A/D converters, and do all the processing in post. The target audience for a tutorial like this are not very likely to have access to any of the expensive gear used here. There's a lot of DAW plugins available that model the behaviour of legacy analog gear. I'm not saying that the analog way can not produce very good results, but if necessary it is hard to undo mistakes made with filters, EQ and compression on a processed recording. With all processing in post, if I have a cold or otherwise a bad day as a recording engineer I can focus on good mic placement and correct gain-staging to get the recording-job done and wait to do the audio-processing some other day when I'm in a better shape.

Here is where this confuses me. I understand the value of a really good guitar and a really good microphone. I understand the value of taking time to get the best source signal possible. What confuses me is why you would fill up this signal chain with a load of additional and very expensive audio processing kit and then After all that convert tot the digital domain. Fine if you are mastering to tape but digital is digital and all the processing can be done better and cheaper there. The quality of the analogue treatment just fails to convince unless you stay in the analogue domain. Also any changes made in the signal chain are there for good.

Always love your expertise, content, etc. But in this case Rick, lets get real. If you are addressing a full pro audience - they already know this stuff. However, Y\your audience in this case will be amateurs, beginners and a maybe a few up-and comers above the peasant class:) Why do a demo using over $35k worth of gear? ( Well that's all you have, of course you don't have cheap gear like 99% of your audience). It would be excellent to learn/know the set up and see how it translates to the ear with a $1000 guitar, $150 mics x 2, a 2x2 $200 interface, no external mic pre-amp, no external, compressor, a Free edition lite DAW and a normal computer, $200 monitors (about $2000, all of which represent what is within the reach of 98% of this audience). Sure a rare $8500 1957 Gibson set up with $25k worth of studio gear, $5000 monitors, a $2000 interface, top end software, cables, $6000 computer... I understand that this is a "how to" video. The show off stuff is kind of a turn off... a backdrop of $200k worth of guitars racked up, another $150k of countless redundant amps. and cabs Sure a pro producer and artist in his 50s will have accumulated gear as well as a well equipped studio is a business. Ok, I get it. Envious :) Still love ya man.

Bounding on the conclusion : Buy a good instrument is 1st. From a donkey you can never make a horse race champion. And this said, adding bling bling to a guitar is like painting the horse in green ... it won't change how fast it's running. So buying a D45 in place of D28 is like spending money on bling-bling, in place of a good mic. IMHO. (This said by Taylor owner who saved a lot at buying 400 Rosewood series (2500$), in place of far more expensive 800 series adding abalone and better looking tuners, with so called AAA in place of AA. At the end of the day, what an instrument sound depends more on its construction quality and materials and the player , than on catalog specs. That's why you cannot buy any Gibson from catalog, except if you love to play at casino, whereas you can with Taylor, Martin, Lowden, Santa Cruz, High End Yamaha, High End Takamine, and other serious serious brands. I'm kinda have a blast vs Gibson who is able to produce a same model as bad as it can be good, the average absolutely not in line with the price. Just like wine, there are good years and bad ones. That's what is happening when you let financial deciders, suicide a brand for money performance in place of acoustic performance.

What are people complaining about he very clearly states at the end of the video that your equipment doesnt matter as much as your source does ... of course you dont have to have 2 distressors and neve pres lying around you can, for the most part, do what he did on literally any other compressor and EQ be it hardware or software ... yes its not gonna be exactly the same sound but he gets the concept across on how he likes to compress and EQ the different mics. He literally used a 57 and you probably dont even need that transformer mod necessarily ... everyone has a 57, hell my granny could probably whip out one if i asked her

Lol everyone getting mad about how much expensive gear he’s using. When did he say “ for home recorders” maybe this is information for studio engineers? Not everything is about you

I use an sm58B and it doesn't sound anywhere near like your 57. Both are dynamic mics. Should I assume it's the guitar I'm using? It sounds alright in real life.

I don't think I'm ever going to understand how to use an EQ and compressor... I understand what they do in theory but how to know which knobs affect what part of the sound is way over my head..

Rick, do you specifically recommend compressing the signal up front instead of recording dry? Is there a reason it would be better? I am recording lots of acoustic guitars at home, I usually record it dry and do anything post production, but I do have some options i could run with my apollo quad using software with that piece of hardware without latency, is this something that would really be beneficial. I thought recording dry is important? No? Thanks for all you do! You rock.

Bob Loblaw in your case recording dry and going with fx in will probably make no difference to you. Recording with effects in only really matters when you are recording a rather complex project with a separate control room, such as in a studio

you are awesome, but I'm glad I have a music background and can understand most of this. If you are new to music don't be discouraged.

Great Video, but also: The room is one of the most important factors when recording an acoustic guitar, or anything really. An O.K. mic is gonna give you a great recording if the room sounds good.

Oh let me just pull out my thousands of dollars of mics . I didn't know it was that easy. I got one condenser and mic pre. Still learned though

How much preamp gain do you typically use with a condenser vs dynamic mic on acoustic guitar ?

I listened to the stereo part with headphones and I actually found the out-of-phase sounds more interesting than the in-phase one.

Agreed, definitely hear the right channel in phase in my headphones when he flips to "out-of-phase". I think something might have gotten flipped in the recording or something, and he's hearing something different in the studio.

Man I thought the out of phase sound in stereo sounded incredible as a texture part.
