Seriously great work, please please keep it up...& a big thank you.

@@Producelikeapro I have a question but I don’t want to waste your time, I’m not a professional. I have a guitar solo that is too abrasive and clunky, and maybe sloppy. So I learned the part and have retracked it cleaner, but now I have 6 tracks of the same solo cleaner but I miss the clunky of the original, and it changes the feel of the part. Do you ever go with not perfect parts over other ones for the benefit of the song?

This was one of the best EQ explanation and demonstration videos I've seen! Thank you Warren! I really appreciated the comparison between multiple plugins and physical gear. I was surprised that I did hear a difference between different EQs and of everything you demonstrated I liked the Pultec simulator best! I learned a big lesson here that even though 5 EQ plugins might all do the same thing, they might not all sound the same.

Great lesson Warren! When I chose a parametric EQ for my rack, after much research, I chose a Klark-Teknik DN4000 for the following reasons. 1st, Being new to parametric EQs, I wanted to have that visual representation to help me both see and learn more about how what I was doing was effecting the curves. 2nd, I wanted to be able to "save" settings for different instruments in my studio, and 3rd, I needed something within a fairly low price range. So far, I've loved it. I initially bought it specifically for my Goodall acoustic guitar, which is my best sounding acoustic, but always tracks with one particular frequency from the g string that is quite unpleasant. The EQ allowed me to find the exact frequency, and completely attenuate it, so that its no longer noticeable at all when I'm recording. Thanks as always! :-)

We have the IGS Audio RB ME in 500 series, which is a stereo passive pultec type EQ and there is a degree of smoothness and weight in the low end that I just can't quite get in plugins and the highs are far more musical - when the Q is appropriately set, you can only tell the EQ is engaged after you bypass it and realise the magic is gone and you're left with something that sounds a little dull and inorganic! It's hard to use words to explain! Great video once again. Thanks!

@Producelikeapro

Hi Steven Butler thanks very much, I really appreciate it! Hardware EQ I love the Pultecs, for instance they are across my master bus at all times, also the Phoenix DRS EQ is my go to for guitar eq plus I just got the BAE B15 EQ which I'm really excited about! My go to plug in since they came out is the McDSP Filter bank, they are easy to use and sound amazing! I do love the Waves EQs though perfect for detail work and their interface is extremely easy to navigate and use. I do hope that helps! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

That helps immensely. I don't think I can afford a vintage pultec at the 16k price point for a while though. However I did manage to pull up a schematic for it and it looks like I could build a replica for a few hundred. That is much more in my price range. Also looking over the schematic for it seems like a relatively easy first vintage audio project.

This is a great overview of the EQ process, thanks! One point I would make, which is touched upon when Warren mentions cutting a frequency on one element while simultaneously boosting the same frequency on another element, is the art of "eq-ing in place", which means making eq changes to an instrument or voice while you hear it in the mix. If you eq each element by itself until each sounds "great" solo'd, you may be disappointed when you put it all together, because there's too much overlap of similar frequencies and that can clutter a mix or make it muddy.

As I have worked to learn about mixing as a home hobbyist for the past 2 years, I have gained a lot of theoretical knowledge by reading and watching KZitem clips. I often wished I could call a local studio and sit and watch them use their tools live. See their decisions and why they make them. You are doing that for me. I cannot express how simply great your videos are. I found the real Puig Tec has more presence, openness and was pleasingly brighter. The plug in seemed a tiny bit more muddy, fuzzy/cloudy; darker. The PT one was good but not nice as the hardware one. I wonder with real equipment there is a harmonic factor happening that just can't happen digitally - meaning frequencies shaping each other? If you know the basic EQ "shape", I imagine you should begin EQ shaping during tracking?
@Producelikeapro
9 жыл бұрын
Hi Fezzler61 thanks for the fantastic comment!! I really appreciate your kind words and I'm so glad I can help! Fascinating video Warren, Thank you. Using the high pass/low pass to 'clear out' space for the vocals and other instruments makes perfect sense to me now in the overall 'painting' of the audio picture of a bands presentation. I am sure good live presentations are doing the same. Some bands just have just so much more "presence" in their sound. (each instrument is clearly definable to the audience) Do you have any insight on how this is done? Thank you for a great series, came here from Scott's bass lessons. - Pete

Amongst other things I think the thing I came away with here is "Get a hardware EQ" There's an obvious difference, with analogue sounding so much more organic and warm. The difference on the guitar was SO noticeable, even over average headphones. I love the preamps on my RME UCX because they're so transparent, so I think pairing that with an EQ would be killer. Alright... it's added to the Christmas list.

One thing worth mentioning is the reason why passive eqs have their own tonal characteristic is because the signal gets pre amplified before getting into the EQ section, so that this signal can be then attenuated or boosted by the user. On another note ... Any word on Mid side EQs? :) Asking because lately I fell in love with the Shepps 73, which beside really sounding like a 1073 has a couple of features like MS and a drive that makes into a really cool plug in.

Produce Like A Pro the Scheps 73 has a little more meat than the other 1073 plug ins I tried so far, the pre amp section it's .... Well ...nothing like a pre amp... Behaves more like a presence knob, which can be turned into a very sweet drive. Also it has an added 10k circuit just like a 1078 and as I said before mid side EQ which can be monitored independently... So yeah very nice product. And thank you for taking the time to make all these videos... I wish I had KZitem 30 years ago in my ... I think and I believe that plugins in general do their job very very well and that might be TOO well for our human ears. I mean no acoustic instrument is ever exactly tuned. And I personally love listening to my mix on laptop and smartphone speakers or other casual speakers besides my monitors cause this un-perfectness really adds character to the song and makes it that charming that we want it to be. So I really love the sound of those old fashion EQs.

Hi Cato Jørgensen great question! I would apply the same EQ, however often when using the same guitar I will change the delay slightly. Check out my guitar production techniques videos for more information. Here's part 1 kzitem.info/news/bejne/0auZ0HyNf3mlp4I Thank you ever so much for watching and I really appreciate your very kind words! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

IMO the hardware pultec eq sounded much more real and organic compared to the plug in, the ssl seemed like it had a phasing character to it. Are we hearing the audio from the camera's microphone or are you feeding it in from protools. Thanks For the video!

Hey Warren, thanks for this amazing series. This was one of the best tutorial for EQing I've ever seen. It helped a lot! I have a question regarding plugins... You said that you can use free plugins and do the same job as with expensive ones. Why should one purchase any of those and what is exactly their advantage? Thanks!!!

Marko Vucinic paid ones have mega good computer pragrammers and the free ones tends to be made by individuals. There r some great free plugins. And its a good place to start. The difference can be massive! warren did a vid on free plug ins

I keep mixing my mixes too bright without realising (vocals/overheads, and guitar), but while EQing my ear tells me it's right.. Any tips of how to get rid of that 'it's not bright enough' illusion we create for ourselves??? You're amazing man, thanks for all the info you give

Hi Jack fin that's a really great question! Firstly I would start by cutting the lows, use high pass on insturments first to clean up the mix and create space, then low pass the Bass, the Electric guitars etc only letting the overheads and vocals be up there super high. If you do those two things first you'll get a lot of space in your mix and won't have to boost as much top end. Secondly and probably most importantly monitor at low volumes, at high volumes your ears turn down the high frequencies and so we boost to the top end to compensate. Hi Warren, first of all great video as allways. Thanks for sharing all these great stuff with us! Isn't it harder to hear all details when you are not sitting in front of your studio speakers? You are sitting sideways to the speakers or are there more hidden in front of you?

I have a question about passive eq's: what's the difference between the attenuation knob and the bandwidth knob? Do they both adjust the Q? Does the attenuation knob do the opposite of the boost knob? if so why could you be able to or even want to attenuate and boost the same frequency? Because of the harmonics of the unit?
@Producelikeapro
9 жыл бұрын
Hi noreaction thanks for the great question! The attenuation knob focuses the EQ in a unique way, I've always just played around with it on a Kick in particular and had amazing results! The bandwidth is definitely the width of the Q and very useful for adding lovely wide or more focused top end to your mix when boosting the high mids and above. I hope that helps! Ho Warren. Great show as always. You mentioned that you liked the Warm Audio EQP-WA and I was wondering how it was for acoustic guitars, and guitars in general?
@Producelikeapro

Hi +Jak Leyton I think the Warm is a good sounding EQ that I might use on an instrument or two, but I don;t honestly think it sounds close to a Pultec, but that shouldn't stop you from trying it out! It's very inexpensive! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren.

Hello Sir, just watched this cool video, I was thinking about buying an EQ and use it when recording the heavy guitars, now I use the EQ on my Torpedo Live rack but heard a comparison video between a Pultech style rack and puigtech plugin and now in your video I can hear that difference too. I think I should put a Pultech style EQ in my wish list, thanks for this great video

Thank you for doing this video Warren it was really comprehensive. I was just wondering about your hi pass cut at 70hz for guitars. I've watched other videos that say the bass drum lives at 60hz. Does this mean the bass guitar lives at 65hz? It seems to be a very small space. Just wondering... Thanks very all you do!

Hi Musical Cooking thanks for the great question! I high pass the guitar at 70-100hz, but there isn't a good strong low down there below 200hz. Basically band pass to remove the low unwanted rumble. The lows on your kick live around 40-70hz. Bass can glue things together in the lows around 60-100hz and some low mids are useful as well. I hope that helps! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Didn't know that about passive eq. Interesting. I heard the difference on the pultec immediately. Less low mids, harmonic distortion and transient response was different too. Less pleasant.

Hi Warren - thanks for your great videos. They have been a real blessing to me and I've learned a lot. I do a lot of vocal overdubs aiming for the Brian Wilson 'full' sound. Could you offer any hints on eq and compression in particular to reproduce that layered sound? Thanks - Jim+

Hi there, just found your channel so I have a lot of content to go through! I was wondering if you have any lessons on how to set up the eq on my guitar amp for a recording session. Should I set it up the same way I set it up in my room when I thought it sounded cool? How much does the eq on the amp matter if it can be adjusted after its tracked?
@Producelikeapro
9 жыл бұрын
Hi +SLIMZ34 Great question! I do have some guitar recording videos. But yes I would set up the EQ so it sounds good to you in the room then adjust from there! There's a few things to consider with EQ but that is all dependent on the genre and the instrumentation. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

QUESTION: I have a horrible time with my mid/low range frequencies and watching your videos has definitely helped me - however, I do have this question that I can't seem to find an answer for anywhere. How does a car EQ actually adjust the correct frequencies? Or does it just have a standard frequency it increases? The reason I ask is because a lot of times I can find the PERFECT sound of the entire song when I adjust the EQ in a certain ration (such as 9-3-3 being Bass, Mid, Treble) . Any suggestions of how to replicate that in the DAW?

Hi Warren, general question. around 22m when you talk about the differences between the Puig Tec vs the Pultec, made me think about remix comps and the "creativity better than gear" argument (bear with me!). I believe you judge remix comps regularly and I was thinking about what you judge? What I mean is, I am in the box all the way, low end gear, but happy to follow the "creativity is better than gear" argument, since it supports my own view, and where I am at!! Yet when you are judging a remix, won't you hear the quality of the gear in the eq/compression etc and won't you effectively be judging that the better gear produces a better sound equals a better remix?

Good Day Warren! One quick question: When you look at your monitor the way you do, when you work with the DAW: Are there another pair of monitors? Or are you just listening to the ones we see behind the meter bar? If there are no monitors, do you do this on purpose to concentrate on sound when mixing on the console or something like that? You know the old symmetry/stereo triangle thing you are hammered in. I think I would be "to afraid" to make any decisive decisions in the daw if I'd just be hearing with one ear :) Chris

There is a Pultec EQ emulation by T-RackS, which I like and use quite a lot. I compared it to the Waves one, and to me the T-RackS sounded much smoother, especially in the high end. In the video, the hardware Pultec sounded much rounder than the plug-in, without a doubt :) Warren, I have sent you an e-mail two weeks ago with the video which we were talking about, on the Melodyne integration in Studio One. Maybe it landed in your spam folder, or one of your assistants deleted it, since I never got a reply, haha. David

Haha Joe Lonsdale ok great! I'm glad someone could tell! It's hard for those listening on headphones or lap top speakers to hear what I'm talking about, but if you multiply that by 30 plus tracks to hear how much low end rumble would build up muddy up the mix! Joe Lonsdale I'm glad you said it ! That low end rumble (external road noise ?) was a bit too distracting. I'm not sure if Warren realized you were talking about the rumble from his mic ! Cool tutorial though..

What I always find problematic in mixing electric guitars, is that amount of gain is always too big at recording phase and cause a lot of mudiness during mixing. So in fact I was always keeping my gain as low as possible, and trying to fill all sound "holes" with multiple mics, which is time consuming (phase issue and so on). In your presentation I can hear a lot of gain on the guitar, did you record it that way just for this particular presentation, or it is rather literally track which was used in your production? I would really love to see how such guitar is "sitting" with bass, which was always quite a problem for me, and I don't have good recipe for.

Hi weglimir thanks for the great comment and question! The song is called 'Love Me I'm Rich' which I wrote and Amanda Hardy sang. Here is a video showing the song and how the guitar fits:- kzitem.info/news/bejne/wqOJ0aGbmpt2d44 I hope that helps! It is a Gibson 'The Paul' going into an Electro Harmonix 'Big Muff' pedal to a Fender Pro Junior mic'd with an SM57 to a BAE 1073 with no compression to tape.
