You do Not need to remove the bottom of the gun... Just the top, also when replacing the top leave it 1 or 2 turns loose and all the air will be forced out when you re engage the spring loaded rod.

Why did you take the bottom off? That is not necessary. Just take the top off and slide the cartridge down in the tube.

OK here's the deal. You don't have to unscrew the bottom at all. Just pull and lock the plunger, unload and reload the grease in from the top, push it home, pop the tube top, screw the gun top back on, and release the plunger. Good guns have an air release valve instead of an allen plug. You can do it about as fast as it took to read this post.

I once worked for a business that occasionally needed to grease it's machinery. The grease gun had a zerk fitting in the hole where you removed the plug to bleed air. When the gun was empty I was sent across the street to the filling station that had an air driven lube gun. The guy over there filled the gun through the zerk.

I had the hose shop make me a longer hose for the gun. Made greasing a lot easier. For outdoor bearings I add some gear oil to the grease. It worked out very good for me. The grease doesn't dry out so fast anymore.

Suggestion: Make sure the grease thickener type you use is the same. In greases, compatibility of thickeners is a big issue e.g. if you use a lithium based thickener, use it always. If you need to change grease to another thickener type, flush and clean your grease gun thoroughly before adding the new grease.

1 Loosen cylinder from top of gun. Do not remove just unscrew several turns. Pull rod out and lock back. Completely remove cylinder, remove empty tube of grease. Remove plastic cap from new tub and insert into cylinder. Remove metal cap and slightly tighten cylinder into top of gun. Release rod allowing it to compress air out and push grease up for the ready. Completely tighten cylinder and you can immediately start greasing with no air bleeding needed because you did already.

WOW!!!! Sure glad I learned the hard way as a kid!! Used to "suck" grease out of a bucket, before these fancy cartridges... In the time it took to watch this video, I could fill the twelve grease guns we needed every morning.. Taking the bottom cap off??? Only to replace the rubbers... Don't need to crack the bleeder screw if you get a couple of turns on the top so it can't pop off, then let the spring loose, work the top on a little and off a little, just a half turn a couple of times.. then tighten it up and go!! Only air you will have is what you pumped in to the hose when you emptied the cartridge.... 6:37 for a 0:15 cartridge swap.. FYI, I make less mess in that 15 seconds.

While i understand you took your time making the video and explaining things for the viewers, that was a really slow and painfull way of loading a grease gun. Retract rod and compress spring. Unscrew top of gun. Release rod which shoots out empty cartridge, preferably straight into bin. Retract again and load new cartridge. Refit top of gun till its tight and unscrew 1 turn. Release rod which drives grease to the top of gun. After the air pocket has escaped screw gun together tightly. On the rare chance you need to bleed it that bleed air as your gun is designed to. That gun really needs to be retired. You can get one with a bleeder valve that is like a big grease nipple. Press down on the ball bearing with your fingertip to release the air. Job done. I've been using a Alemlube 660A gun for many years and have never had a problem with it.

Its funny all the people leaving negative views, great video by the way. For those that can do it in 3 seconds, I'd like to see it on video. For me the hard/difficult part was taking the old cartridge out. It was sitting for like 7 years and there was so much suction and I was pulling extremely hard to remove the tension spring and that "T" rod. That's what brought me to this video, however your cartridge came out really easy. On mine I pulled so hard it pulled the front end of the cartridge inside the whole tube about 1/4" of an inch, then I had to use a 1X2 long piece of scrap wood and bang the cartridge back out the front.

If harvest time for you is anything like it is in Idaho- time is cash money! I wouldn't take the bottom off either. For illustration reasons of the video and to prevent mass grease exodus (especially for beginners who would likely learn from this video) it's a good idea to remove the base and use this order of operations. Have you ever seen compressed air in the base burp up a tube of grease or have the spring slip? Just imagine a baby calf with diarrhea standing over your head. ; )

I like to fish a fingerful of grease from the back of the new tube, add it to the front of the tube and shape it like the cavity in the gun head. Seems to reduce air bubbles and the need to bleed them out.

Prolly so there was no spring pressure pushing the grease out of the tube as you try and slide the grease tube into the gun tube. Don't have a grease gun, So I don't know for sure, but that makes logical sense to me anyway?? I suppose on a cold day or something it wouldn't be critical, but if you had "hot" grease or a thinner grease or something.........

Well.. I got the easiest way to fill my hand grease gun. We have a 33 gallon air operated grease gun and I took and screwed a grease fitting into the top of my hand operated grease gun. I now can just click the air operated one onto the grease fitting in the top of my hand operated gun and just refill it by pumping grease ot of the 33 gallon tub into my gun. Fastest and cleanest way to do it! Never need to take the top or bottom off my gun or even use a grease tube! *FTW*

You are not supposed to remove the bottom of the gun for loading, and you should be able to lock the piston with the long rod, then push it to remove air bubbles through the loosened top bleed valve, or loosened top of the gun, then turn to unlock the rod from piston, and push it in.

+adrian961, pull the handle back and lock it in place when the gun isn't being used. The constant pressure of the plunger on the grease literally squeezes the oil out of the soap. It makes gun storage more of a hassle but it'll stop the separation.

As many years I have been changing those damn things,no one ever told me about the air bleed screw. I have had my sharing this video or otherwize I would still be messing with air issues. I fight with that every time and end up unscrewing and burping the top, then fighting to get it back on,after pulling the long rod back out again. Then I get grease every place screwing the top cap back on,just so I dont get air in the line, then have to pump and waste a big glob of grease in a rag until it comes out normal. Those so called experts can just go watch something else,I learned something today I never knew. Damn!
