Thanks for this tutorial Peter. I just dropped my new Seiko SRPE61, which was running at -4 seconds per 24 hours (very excellent) and the minute hand came unseated. Thank you very much, very simple explanation of a very complicated mechanical process. I had to regulate my Orient Mako, comparing it with a radio controlled Casio. Took me about 2 months to get it running at a, for me acceptable rate. If , like me, you are a little OCD about accuracy, and you don't have high end watch money, buy yourself a good quartz watch and be done with it. I would give one extra advice, don't forget to blow away any foreign particles before closing the case back. I am often disappointed be the performance of mechanical watches, Seiko and others alike. They may be relatively "cheap ' , but that doesn't imply the lack of interest from manufacturers. Great video work, thanks!

Thanks for this informative video. I do not own a timegrapher but I thought if I’m careful and don’t make a large adjustment I may have some success regulating my Seiko SRP775. It was running 1 min slow/day. I demagnetized it with no change in rate. Today I opened the case back, used a wooden skewer to make a small adjustment and am happy to report it’s keeping perfect time. Beginner’s luck I guess. I am really enjoying your videos. Best from 🇨🇦

Excellent video Peter. I just got myself a timegrapher and had decided to use the approach you described to regulate my watches based on real world/positional accuracy on the wrist data. What you described in this video is the first time in many KZitem videos on watch regulation /timegrapher instructions that I’ve looked at where this approach was described and so clearly. I use the ToolWatch app on my phone to get an estimate of how accurately my watch is running on my wrist which is essentially what you describe. It’s interesting to compare the results vs the Timegrapher. For some watches it’s very similar-others can be very different. This identifies the watches which may be more sensitive to positional variation! What sort of data (amplitude, beat error etc) do you need to see that indicates to you that it needs to go to a professional for a service? You’ve got me as a subscriber. Cheers mate.

Beat errors above 1.0 ms are out of spec, but this does not generally affect rate. Amplitudes above 200 degrees are generally good. On some high end watches, anything below 230 degrees would usually indicate servicing needed (oils are dry/old).

When I lengthen the test period I find that I have a sample that has the capacity to give me a more accurate reading. Two seconds, IMHO, is far too short a period to get the kind of accurate account one would hope for when tuning such a sensitive adjustment. Especially if someone's expecting the best results. Great video all in all. Many blessings watch lovers..😊 x

Then I invested in some proper tools, and I performed five successful regulations so far (four on NH35 movements, one on a Miyota 8215). Great video Peter, very well explained & the quality of your videos is very high. I got a time grapher a while ago as I have a few vintage watches & it's good for assessing the condition of the movements in them. Regarding positional variance you can use this to your advantage, I have a Seiko turtle that runs + 5 secs a day on wrist, but crown down it loses about 8 secs a day, so if I leave it over night like this it effectively only gains about 1 sec a day! Cheers

Peter Kotsa By the way I had a Seiko five with a 7S36 movement and I actually adjusted that thing blind every day I would have to monitor the accuracy and move it a little and man that was a task! I finally got it to about +2 or three seconds a day. Just got an Invicta pro diver to play with, with the NH35A Seiko movement And being only two days old it’s running about three seconds slow but I’m wondering if watches will break in and actually run a little faster? Would be nice to get one of those timegraphers eventually
@PeterKotsa
4 жыл бұрын
@@RJtoon1 Let it run at -3 se and see what happens in about 2-3 weeks, be patient. It should settle to a more accurate reading and then you might need to just tweak it. cheers
@RJtoon1
4 жыл бұрын
Peter Kotsa thanks, appreciate it. If you go to my page (newest vid) you can see how the app timegrapher was ranging and it was a WIDE range at first. But I did the test again and it did settle around the -3 seconds that I figured out just by using the cellular signal to the second. I used to have a Tissot Seastar that I bought new in 2003 and that thing ran 12 minutes fast a month out of the box. So what I did to save crown wear and tear was at the beginning of every month I set it slow six minutes so that by the 15th of the month it would be bang on and then at the end of the month it would be six minutes fast. After a few years I sold it to my cousin and he still wears it daily it’s never been serviced and the accuracy is bang on perfect accurate! So that one took about two or three years to actually settle down. It was an ETA movement.

I can see on your gauge that you are pretty much at the limit of adjustment using the on balance gauge, which some say is the watch's way of saying "service me" but would love to see how you use the other regulating arm in relation to it all as I am stuck with two healthy watches that had their other arms knocked and I can't seem to get back into any form of beat.
@PeterKotsa
4 жыл бұрын
With the other arm to get the watch in beat it is super sensitive. Certain watches can fluctuate from 9.9ms beat error to 0.5ms in the slightest of adjustment. Perseverance and patience...

Is there any way to somewhat remedy the positional variance on a cheaper movement? Is it a problem with imbalanced movement parts?
@PeterKotsa
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, that's correct, being a cheaper movement it will keep really good accuracy on one or possibly two planes, however parts are as you say, not perfectly balanced and so on different axis you get the variations. That is why we pay so much more for certified chronometers banked on 4 , 5 or 6 axis etc.

I have a Pepsi Turtle similar to the one you used here that I purchased new from an official Seiko dealer (the biggest in the country I live in) a couple of years ago. Being a newer version it has the updated 4R36 movement, at least that’s what it says on the watch dial and caseback itself. It functions fine, can be hand wound as advertised, but it doesn’t hack! Now that’s odd because that’s supposed to be a feature of the 4R36 as well as the hand winding capability. Any ideas why that might be the case? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you 🙏 🙂

You sound a bit central european english speaker... just saying...lol Btw, i know you're a(nother) Seiko guy, any chance you jump into Citizen's eco drive (autos too...)? Maybe??? Or opinion at least...? I'm totally on a BN0110/118 style, did you ever tried one?

Greek roots with plenty of Hungarian and some Chech friends as well..LOL. I have never had the pleasure of trying the Citizen 110 or 118, but what an absolutely superb piece, it is rock solid and beautiful look about it case and dial. Very nice indeed.

Which is the best position for resting our watch if we go to sleep?
@PeterKotsa
4 жыл бұрын
Just resting the watch units back is fine. Some people rest it with the crown facing up, others with the crown facing down and still others on its back. The reason they do this is because different movements either gain or lose seconds when placed on a different angle. Eg, a watch that gains 5 second per day in usage might loose those same 5 seconds at night, when placed at a particular resting position. What position that is depends upon your watch Generally rest mine on their back (unless they are on a steel bracelet so I rest them on their side to avoid the bracelet scratching the casebook at night) thats just me..:) Hope that helps cheers

Is a 6r15 movement a cheap movement?
@PeterKotsa
4 жыл бұрын
It is a mid tier movement, basically you have the entry 7 series, eg 7S26, then a 4 series eg 4R36 then 6 series eg 6R15 and the 8 series and Series..Grand Seiko's etc

Peter Kotsa is the a different way for battery or quartz’s watches ? To be regulated?
@mrp9498

Well it looks like I ruined my first watch. I tried to regulate the exact same Seiko 7s26 and went in pushed the lever back a bit now the watch it’s running +900 a day no matter what I do and the beat error is 5.0 with low amplitude. I did hit the balance wheel a few times on accident I think that’s what did it.

Ouch, down stress, i have done far worst septs on my first attempt as well, however managed to get it back into great timing (after some patience and a few hours of experimenting) My first attempt was on a 6R15 movement and I STUFFED it completely. Way over +999 sec per day 9.5 MS beat error and then it just stopped working. I persevered and after a few hours I GOT IT!!! That same watch now runs at +1 sec per day at 0.0 ms Beat Error and amplitude of 290. I have not needed to adjust that watch for the last year and it still runs perfectly. Give it another crack if your keen, at least your movement is a 7S26 instead of a 6R15 as my first one was...cheers Peter

My watch loses 7 seconds a day even though I wear it everyday. Is this normal?
@PeterKotsa
4 жыл бұрын
7 seconds is reasonably good. It all depends on what watch, so you can determine its rated accuracy. What is the brand and model? cheers Peter

Peter Kotsa the brand is Invicta with the Seiko nh35a movement. Also whatever position I put it in it doesn’t gain time. Is that normal?

Weishi timing machine. A China made copy of Witschi. Weishi only for timing fake Rolex. A horologist better use genuine tools.

I know, this is just for entry level enthusiasts who like to dabble in their hobby. I made it clear in the video, do not use this type of equipment and lack of knowledge to open your good watches..you will regret it :)..thanks for the feedback cheers

What an absolutely pointless meter. You can't actually Regulate any watch with it. You just observe what it's doing.
@PeterKotsa

Hi David, when we say regulate, we speak about slowing or speeding up the watch, that's all that this machine is designed for. The feedback received from the data allows you to reduce or increase speed as well as beat error. Pretty simple, but it works. It does a great job in getting these entry level movements into a very usable speed range. Cheers Peter
