Thank you for making this video. I recently had new strings and maintenance on my cello via my luthier. (I was gifted the cello and it needed bridge and sound post adjustments) because the cello was sitting for awhile they said it needed new strings. I had it serviced in September 2020 and they claimed to have changed the strings. I changed my D string as it snapped. The D string string was not neat around the peg and was warped at the bridge area. The luthier did not include extra set of strings. I had my cello serviced at a time that was very busy as students were getting string instruments for school. I found out that they recognized my cello was a nice older cello purchased from their shop (originally). I do not think they changed my D string even though they claimed the strings were replaced. Note: I am new to the cello and previously played violin as a child.

Easy enough! Do you need to stretch the strings like a guitar string, or just tune up and go? Also, do you need to keep the strings from crossing over each other around the peg? I noticed your G string seemed to cross over a bit, rather than stay in line with itself.

Jonathan Excellent demonstration on replacing your strings. My question is do you tune your cello to 440 hz or 432 hz? ?
@CelloCoach
5 жыл бұрын
Actually, here in France we tune to 442 hz for most repertoire and 415 hz for Baroque music. It varies per country, culture, ensemble and genre. My German students tune to 445 hz, whereas my Korean students prefer 441 hz.

Thanks for this! I watched it a bit late after I’ve basically dismantled the cello 🤦🏻♀️ Is it normal for the fine tuner to be so tough to turn the slightest or is it just a cheap cello feature?
@CelloCoach
5 жыл бұрын
Check the finer tuner if it is aligned with the mechanism underneath. Sometimes, the screw against the push level thing (you can tell I'm an engineer) on the underside is off center. Also, verify the threads are not crossed. Lastly, add some lube to the screw, for even on my 50K master cello, the darn finer tuners stick!

Useful tutorial but I feel as though you jumped a bit at 3:30 when winding the string on the peg. It appears that you cross over the string on itself while turning but this bit is omitted and not discussed!

The strings makers(companies) must use private and special code number on product for be sure the strings are original whic we bought.We should check it on internet website of company.The fake pruduct makers can make that red sign mark things on envolope too.

I dont know if you going to answer this comment but it's little emergency for me. Yesterday i was trying to tune my cello and i realize my d string is not tuning, i turned it like 10 or 11 times but it was doing nothing. İ take off it to check what is going on and i see that top part of my string its colored blue is break off and it was inside of peg. I freak out and dont know what to do those are was my new strings and luthier did put those on. Please help me.
@CelloCoach
2 жыл бұрын
No worries - the string broke and if you luthier is nice, they can give you a "shop string" otherwise you may have to buy one (and an extra for the future) because strings break. If the string does snap in the hands of your luthier, they will replace it. All other cases for broken strings the player must purchase one. As for that blue threading, it is there to keep the string from flying off when it snaps. A safety measure

@@CelloCoach Thanks for answering! I placed my string back because it wasnt broke off at all, it stuck on the peg hole somehow i dont know, that coused to a little part of D string broke but theres still blue part can fill in the peg. It still makes nice D sound only problem is its making a noise like mosquito when i play last note on D string if i play someting else at the end i cant hear that but in the D it makes it self obvious. Some economical cases going on on my wallet right now and i cant buy any new strings, maybe in the future...
