Dear Subaru, if you have to have an emergency release procedure like this in place, perhaps you need to reconsider the system's design and operation. Thank you for not being in the aviation industry.

Very helpful, but there was one important omission: The 200 turns of the release bolt need to be CLOCKWISE, which is the opposite of the counterclockwise direction in which you first have to turn the plastic cover in order to get it off.

Also, you will hear the brake gradually releasing as you turn the knob clockwise.

thanks. great video. i have a 2012 outback that had the parking brake stuck. first time i watched it, i thought i heard to turn the the relase counter-clockwise but after rewatching, i heard you correctly to turn the white protective plug counter-clockwise to remove the plug. i read the owners manual and the procedure is in the manual. they have a warning in bold letters to not turn the release nut(not the protective cover) counter-clockwise. the release nut must be turned clockwise. the first 175 or so turns, it felt like i was not doing anything but i eventually felt resistance to turning the nut. i actually checked that the parking brake was still engaged after about 150 turns(by starting the car and trying to move in reverse. sure enough, it was still engaged. after i felt the resistance i turned it until turning the nut felt difficult. now the brake is released though the brake light is still on. i just thought i would add this comment for clarity but your video was well done. thank you again. now i can drive the car to subaru to get it repaired.

Sooooooo much better to see your video than to figure out what the manual is saying. THANK YOU!!! My brake gets stuck about every three weeks. I simply unplug the battery... wait a minute... hook it back up, and it's fine. Everything is a computer these days. From our cars, to our watches, and almost to our shoes! And when you have a computer problem, the first thing to do is reboot. ATB from Colorado!

i was going to try that until i watched this video. glad to know that unplugging the battery works as well. if after subaru 'fixes' this, i run into the issue again, i will try that as it sounds easier if i am not in a place where it would be easy to perform the fix from the video.

Ridiculous that Subaru would produce such an atrocity that would require a manual tool and procedure to fix the crap that they should have fixed before manufacturing the vehicles. I had my brake regulator replaced, which cost over $700, and the new one is doing the same thing now! It's almost as bad as their being so stupid, they don't have a temperature gauge on the dash, which cost me thousands of dollars for a head gasket replacement that should never have happened. But on your end, GREAT VIDEO! Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for this! My parking brake was not stuck - my shifter was stuck in park and I could not get my key to turn in the ignition (either way - to get it out, or to start the car) - it's that same tool that you use to release the shift lever and I found that tool thanks to your video. Thanks!

I had lifted the rear passenger side to remove/repair a tire. When I put the car back down I had the stuck parking brake problem and thought I would have to insert and do the 200 turns solution. Instead, I lifted the car up again, tuned the key (electric power only) stepped on the brake, and the parking brake then released. I believe that this stuck brake problem happens when the park brake is on, and there is pressure in different directions against each tire as it sits on the ground. relieve the pressure (jack up one tire) and the stuck parking brake will release.-Just a theory

After emergency parking brake would not release, I viewed this a couple of times, then when I went through each step I was happy that everything was just as described and shown on the video, all except for the final step. Emergency parking system would not release or turn off. Looking to have this pos 2013 Subaru Outback towed somehow if I can find some tow company that knows how to get the pile of garbage towed without harming it you know, since wheels won't turn. Also, learned that Subaru has a service bulletin and extended warranty to address the blatant failure in auto engineering. Stuck. 40k miles since new and stuck.

If you’re stuck in a parking lot like me, just keep pulling the E-brake release WHILE shifting and backing out. It will automatically shut off the E brake that you accidentally hit with your leg.

I HATE the electronic parking brake (NO emergency brake?) extremely unsafe! :O that is the biggest complaint I have about the modern Subaru cars. also have a 2019 crosstrek for my wife and it has an emergency brake :) plus better mpg and a fun car to drive. Subaru should never have an electronic parking brake it is unsafe and fails when there is no power [DC] an emergency brake is for Emergency use when all else fails to stop you. [just keep the cables in good shape to be safe] the E-brake can only be operated manually with great difficulty (try operating it during an emergency, the port is behind the drivers seat and operated with an alen wrench [which is hidden in a bag] the E parking brake is NOT an emergency brake
