Great job, you should put '''Polyurethane''' in the title, it's the best on the subject but it took some time to pop up in the search. Many people would try this, you've done great. Hardware and the pickguard too, really tasty, not too much of anything, awesome!

Since you don’t re coat these after you’re done and just leave a coat of paint on there is it susceptible to cracking or swelling due to temperature changes and body oils etc.? Thanks!
@PetesGuitarUniverse

No, it's fine. You're just removing the gloss topcoat. The paint still protects it fine. Better all round really

Very nice and well done. Is there a way of turning a white guard to mint green?
@PetesGuitarUniverse
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Wet sand the sheen off the pickguard, using fine grit wet and dry, then mix a little brown wood dye with a very very small amount of green, or just brown, then rub it on carefully and buff it straight back off immediately. That will age / colour the pickguard to your taste.

What grit of sandpaper did you use? I have a black P Bass that I am wanting to relic. Thanks!
@PetesGuitarUniverse

I had 400, 800 and 1000 grit paper. But I found the pads better, because they are better to use wet. Don't worry about using quite coarse paper, as it wears down as you use it anyway. Very light abrasives don't last long enough. Just get ready for some arm-pump. It's hard work, best split over several days to get the finish right. But WELL WORTH IT.

It's not about wearing it out. Many years of playing wouldn't result in such a beautiful relic finish. It's about getting a better playing, feeling and looking instrument.

You CAN relic poly, and it looks great when done well. I've reliced lots of guitars this way. Watch my other videos to see how good this guitar came out. And I'm about to release a new video where I relic the new Jet JS300 strat reviewed in my recent vids. And it's come out amazing. You live you learn :-)

@@chum7920 that's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. But in my many years of doing this, I can't say I agree with you. Poly finishes relic'd correctly look and feel awesome. Watch out for my next video, which is another amazing poly relic job on a Jet JS300 strat. It's come out brilliant
