I needed this last night at 11pm. I was just going to bed and it started beeping every 20 secounds or so. After tripping the mains supply contactor, it took me an hour to work out how to remove the alarm - it clearly had a battery too. What a stupid bloody design !! I nearly took a hammer to it in anger and frustration, to stop it beeping.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. You most certainly do need to isolate the supply when working on anything supplied by electricity. I did forget to mention this during my demonstration as I was working on a brand new installation so I knew that it was already safe to work on. However, when creating the video, I did add a written note to the video at the position of 00:42. I hope this helps. Kind regards Steve :)

It sounds like it may be one of the sealed units. These are usually great and last the full ten year period but as with any product, devices can become faulty as can the circuits that power them should they be hardwired with a battery back up. Funny you should mention that. I have managed the removal with a house key previously. That being said, if you cause damage to the device then you will not be able to remove it or worse still, you will have to replace it so for the cost of a screwdriver, a trip down to your local tool warehouse will be a far better option 🙂👍🏼

Can you help please? I don't have a voltage detector thingy! I don't know if I need to switch off a switch on the fusebox. I don't have a switch labelled smoke detector on there. I have ones labelled: lighting, lighting, sockets, sockets, shower, cooker. On the left of those is 2joined together red switches/switches saying main switch. It's a very cheap, 15 year old, basic smoke alarm, that doesn't have an external battery flap neither! How do you know if you have to flick a switch on the fusebox, please!? I have pressed the hush button for 20 seconds but it's not resolved the chirping. Would I electrocute myself by not pressing a switch on fusebox off, then twisting plastic cover off to see which battery I need please? I have a 9v here. To stop it chirping temporarily, can I turn the plastic cover anticlockwise, safely without flicking a switch off on the fusebox!? I see a video or read online about turning the plastic anticlockwise & I think removing the battery to try stop chirping
@vwithers1584

And my cover isn't twisting off! Why's that? I can't seem to feel a groove for a screwdriver I found, but it says turn anticlockwise so it surely should come off? Did you use a yale lock key or a longer type key, please?

I appreciate your help but let's face it, making it complicated for those who don't have a screw driver available or are not into getting into all the shenanigans in the middle of the night to stop the irritating noise it's plain stupidity of an engineering. Why not making it as simple as pushing a button to open the smoke alarm? I bet you will bankrupt all this wanna be manufacturers who don't simplify things.
