Hey Deb. Thanks for the question. There are a few things that I learned from that project. First, it is not easy, if you have the money and not comfortable with tools, I recommend hiring a pro, but if you are good with tools and like a challenge, make sure you wear good work gloves, the metal is very sharp, safety glasses and ear protection a must, it gets very loud. Make sure the tank is empty. There may be liquid and sludge at the bottom, that you can pump or scoop out and place into 5 gallon buckets. What is left at the bottom can be absorbed using cat litter, the amount of litter you will need depends on how much you have left to absorb. The litter can be placed into garbage bags and can go out with the trash. The fluid, on the other hand, must be taken to the hazardous waste facility. As for cutting the tank, I recommend getting the best Reciprocating saw and metal cutting blades you can. My first saw broke and I went through a dozen cheaper blades. Cut the tank into pieces that you can move safely and easily. I had very little room to move large pieces and they had to fit into my tiny hatchback. I took the metal to the scrap yard and got a few bucks for it. Well, I hope that helps. stay safe and good luck.

Hi Joe, I have one of these in my basement that is not used and after watching this video I think it is something I can do on my own rather than hire out. How do you dispose of the old oil/sludge and recycle the cut up tank? Thanks for putting together a comprehensive tutorial!
@joeremy302

Hey Joe, thanks for watching. I only had about 12 gallons of fluid in the tank. I filled up 3 5 gallon buckets. I put lids on them so the fluid would not splash when I put in my car. I took the buckets to my local hazardous waste site. As for the metal I cut the tank into small piece so I could carry them easier in my car. I took them to my local scrap metal site. If you search online you probably can find sites near you. If you have a lot of fluid you will need to drain the a tank from the bottom or use a pump. You will need a lot more buckets. also, maybe there is company near you that will drain the tank. You can then cut the tank up yourself. I hope that helps.

I was wondering why this was cut in so many pieces till you mentioned sticking it in your car. The tank itself is not all that heavy and can be carried by two guys if you have something to grab it by. They are also skinny enough (24 inches) to fit through most doors.... and only 5 ft long so you can stand it up on end if needed. Most guys cut the pipes, then cut the top off and carry the bigger parts into the yard to do the rest, once the oil has been removed. Doing it outside really helps cut down on the dust / dirt factor. Oh, if you are any good with that saw you can do the entire job with maybe 2 blades. (the right blades help)
@joeremy302

Thanks for the question...it all had to do with space. The exit was too narrow for moving large pieces out, a lot of tight turns, boxes and a door that swings the wrong way, also my car is tiny and the pieces fit better when they where cut smaller. I hear what you are saying...I know, If I had a ton of space to work in, a nice pickup and and extra pair of hands, I could of cut it up in 3 pieces and had it out much faster, and as for the blades...correct, better blades would of helped, but they all run 2 to 3 times more and I was on a tight budget...which was no budget. Anyway thanks for responding

I just did this last week. I bucketed 60 gallons in five gallon buckets. Their was a lot of sludge in the bottom, it took me about 25-30 mins to fill one bucket. I cut the vent pipes and then I cut the tank across the middle. I used 100 pounds of speedy dry to soak up the sludge. I bagged it. I cut the tank into four pieces and my wife helped me carry it out of the basement. I scrapped it and got $39 at my local scrap yard, I thought they were gonna bust my chops about it But they didn't say anything. Broke one saws all and I used about 5 blades. The tank was installed in 1950 so it was really not thin metal. Still worth it cause I just got a quote from a tank removal company of $1,330. Im in NY.

@@steveg6600 I dumped 4 - 60 pound bags of speedy dry into the sludge and stirred it up until it was thicker than a cement mix. I just bagged it in black bags and the town picked it up on bulk day. I didn't have anyone inspect or file anything. Its like a $250 application fee and the county has to inspect the area. I have never heard of anyone contacting the county to have it inspected. Even my plumber who installed the gas boiler told me no one will know. My basement is finished now so no one knows it was ever there. The state wants money for everything you do.

When we stopped using oil and converted to natural gas years ago we made sure the filler tubs were rotated so there was no question the oil tank should NOT be filled. I think my Uncle sealed the caps on with thread lock. I’m removing the tanks soon so I’ll yank those tubes out seal up the holes. My next door neighbor still uses oil so that scenario would be a disaster for me.
