Now this is what I call a well made video. Music levels low, audio is just right, information and details on point as well as demonstration. Well done guys, well done.

Excellent Video! thoroughly enjoyed the entire video. The only complaint is the music the whole time while talking, drove me crazy!

Hi, I enjoyed the vid v much. I have one question. Can a Gen 2 987 Caymen with no Limted Slip Diff be retrofitted with an LSD? How difficult or easy is the job?

Again, just a suggestion; need to invest on a microphone. Nothing fancy. Great video.

Steve mentions that oil samples go to Blackstone Labs. To be precise, this means that an oil sample is mailed to Blackstone Labs in Indiana for a Used Oil Analysis (UOA). More info here: www.blackstone-labs.com/what-is-oil-analysis.php.

Did you replace the o ring ? If so do you have the part number for it ?

Question: Is it just that 17mm bolt that holds the axle stubs into the diff? Good video. Thanks
@roaringtigersgarage4672
Жыл бұрын
Yes, a single 17mm bolt. the axle stubs are splined, so the bolt is just to keep the stub from sliding off the spline.....although nowhere to go if the half-shaft is in place at both ends.

Great video on the content guys. As for the making of the vid itself, please get a lapel mic and also, the music is unecessary during explanations.

Great video thank you. Are you aware of anyone offering this service in the south of the UK? My standard diff is open (too many track days), and I would like to replace the internals with Guards.

Different bearings and differential case and no crown gear lift / backlash adjustment ? Gearbox oil analysis should be the least of Your concerns.

Vlad, I referred your question to Bill Rader who guided us through the process. He is an expert in these matters, and does gearbox work for many professional race teams. Here is his reply question to you. Please keep me in the email chain so I can follow along and continue to provide accurate information in our videos. Thank you for your interest and helping us provide a great online resource! -Steven veloyelo@yahoo.com Hello Vlad, Please let me know what exactly you did with your diff in your GT3. Sounds like you installed new bearings and an LSD, did you swap over the spacers from the original diff to the new one? What brand differential did you use? Let me know and I can better give you some information. Hello Roaring Tigers Garage, thank You for Your reply. I would like to begin by saying that I do not own a Porsche and I have never worked on one, however I am familiar with Audi and their gearboxes which share a lot of common parts and design features - including differentials, crown and pinions with Porsche (no surprise as they belong to the same Volkswagen-Audi consortium). I have some experience in swaping the Audi V8 rear torsen differential to AudiS6 C5, S4 B5, S4 B6 and so on... The design of the differential housing and the differential cover plate is the same for all Audi gearboxes and rear final drive units produced in the `90,`00 and enevn `10 and is also similar to what I have seen in Your video here. In the `00 manual porsche gearboxes were nothing but an Audi gearbox slightly modified and assembled at he rear. According to Audi workshop manual each time You replace the bearings/the cover plate/the differential/the gearbox or final drive housing the the crowngear lift/backlash should be adjusted to reach the specified play. This is done by choosing the right spacers for the bearings inside both the gearbox housing and cover-plate. The thickness of the spacers is determined in two steps: 1 total shim thickness - first the outer bearing race is inserted inside the gearbox housing along with a 1.00 mm shim and the other bearing outer race is installed in the cover plate; then the differential without the crowngear is installed and then the cover plate is bolted on; with the help of a special tool and a measuring gauge the freeplay is measured (the gearbox must lie on its side so it is not possible to do this directly on the vehicle) a corresponding total shim thickness is determined according to a formula taking into account the freeplay. 2 choosing the shims for the gearbox housing: the coverplate is removed, the crowngear is installed and shims are installed in the coverplate their thickness = total shim thickness -1 (remember that a 1.00mm shim was already installed in the gearbox housing); the differential and the cover plate are installed once again in the gearbox housing then a special tool is mounted in the differential driveshaft bearing and by means of a measuring gauge the backlash is measured in 4 positions each 90 degrees. Using the measured value and a formula the thickness of the final shim needed inside the gearbox housing is determined. The final shim thickness for the cover-plate is then determined as the difference between the total shim thickness an the housing shim thickness. Once again the whole assembly is taken apart and finally the correct shims are installed. Regarding Your video, I have noticed that You haven`t changed the shims and the outer bearing races but You changed the differential and the bearing (rollers and inner races). I think You may risk having the wrong precharge for Your bearings (shorter lifetime) and the wrong backlash play (not good for the lifetime and wear of the pinion and crowngear). Of course we can suppose that the differential is machined to tight tolerances but I doubt You have exactly the same rigidity for those two differentials and the same distance between the crowngear flange and the gearbox housing bearing sitting surface. Keep up the good work. Best regards from Eastern Europe :)

So since the title says "How to Remove and Replace a Porsche 997.1 GT3 Differential " I have to comment and point out that the one thing the title mentions is the one thing that is now shown nor explained. Meaning the "fighting" the diff out of the transaxle with it installed in the car. Disappointing really.

Killtune, I apologize for the confusion on this topic. It's not really a fight to get it out....just trying to be humorous. Once the diff plate is off, the diff simply slides out, but you will have to wriggle it past some hoses and such. It's relatively easy, just need to be patient if it gets hung up on something...it does come out without removing any more parts! -Steven
