Thanks! Your vid allowed me to easily replace my valve stems and stop the slow leak coming from the cold water tap in my bathtub. Because they were glued/caulked in place, I was unable to remove the "sleeves" that covered the valve stems, but my shower wrench was able to access the packing gland adjuster AND the main stem nut, so I didn't bother with trying to remove the sleeves. My valves, installed in 1973 when the house was built, use common Sayco parts, and I was fortunate in the fact that my local Lowe's had the entire stems, complete with O-rings and rubber seals, ready to go at $12 each. I was pressed for time, so I bought a set, lubed them with plumber's silicone, and threaded them in. After adjusting the packing gland, no leaks! Question: How tight should we adjust the packing glands, anyway? I guessed that they shouldn't be needlessly tight, but I wouldn't mind knowing, as I plan to "touch them up" in a week or so. Lowe's had the knob removal tool for $9, and Harbor Freight has the plumber's wrench/socket set for $10. Note: The original homeowner had replaced the hot stem, but not the cold, at some point in the past. Cheap SOB! Again, thanks! --KK

Kind Sir, you did a good job showing us; what can cause leaking in faucets. The "gasket and the packing". But you missed a very common problem that does it too. IE: The "gasket" is stopped by a part called "the SEAT". And it takes a special "Tool" to get it out and put in. So, AFTER you remove the entire "STEM", the seat is still in the pipe. And it goes bad. For what it's worth.

I have something very close to your bathtub stem removal, though my is just and old two handle shower. Either way, where did you get that wrench from. I looked at the big box store and online, what is it called. Your link just took me to the socket removal (which is good) and the puller, which I do not need at this point, as I have the handles off. My channel locks will not take off those silver round covers, so now I am stuck on getting out the stems. Thanks Mary

I do not know what type my faucets are. This is an older house. I cannot figure out how to get into the faucet. I can get the handle off, but then nothing moves. I'm afraid of breaking it. If I could see a picture/s of older faucet types then I could learn what kit to purchase and possibly be able to get into change the washers and such. I have changed my hot washer kits for many years, but the faucets are a lot newer than this one. I could send a photo if you need it.

In my case, the hardware is all fine, it's just one of the two handles, made of kind of a plastic faux-crystal material in a long, thinnish shape, shattered into many pieces, so must replace (believe both handles should be replaced as probably can't get exact duplicate of the unshattered one and want them to match.) The handle fit into a socket which perhaps attached to the stem underneath the decorative surface, but the socket isn't threaded, so trying to figure out what is involved in attaching a new handle and how it attaches to the socket. But so far I haven't found a vid on this, perhaps it's too simple so noone considers it worth a vid.

I had installed a new hot water tank 12-30-13. Now the only problems I have are the decreased water pressure (not a whole lot but we'd like more) and the hot water in the shower is ridiculously low. While showering the hot water is on as high as it will go but then the cold water is barely on or you have a freezing cold shower. The hot water in the bathroom sink was low but self corrected one day when a glob of brown stuff flowed out with the water. I was told to turn off the water, remove the stem and 'blow it out' to remove the possibly remaining 'glob.' Is that correct? How do I 'blow it out?' Would the new faucets on the market help with the water pressure issue? Please help!

I have a tile shower that has faucets that appear similar to these (though no bathtub spigot.) The cold water faucet drips steadily (from the shower head, not the handle.). My house was built in 1961 and I have had plumbers and handymen look at repairing this. They tell me that my faucets are "antique," the hardware is no longer available, and that they'd have to tear out the whole tile wall and repair them from the other side. (The faucets are on an outside wall so this means the bricks outside would have to be dismantled to repair these valves.) Really? I can understand old faucet parts MAYBE not being available any more but ripping out the tiles and the bricks on the outside for what looks like it SHOULD be a simple repair? I'm not a plumber but am no idiot either. Is the repair shown in this video on an "antique" valve, e.g. mid-sixties vintage?

Yes, it is.... and if you can't replace it from a local hardware store, this is what you are facing. I have had the misfortune of having to do the same on several of my clients' homes. Not a pleasant experience, but they now have a newer shower faucet that doesn't leak! BTW, I've got some more cool videos scheduled. I cannot remove screws that attach the handles to the stems. The screws are locked in place they are striped and won't move. Do you have any ideas on how I can remove them

Or just take a series of bits, starting with small and working up to 3/8" or maybe 1/2" and just grind out that bad boy. You may also need a plumbers handle puller for about $12 at your home center. Or a plumber.

Hi Sara fina, You may have to call a plumber after all and see if they will take installment payments...or try Craigslist. Sometimes a handyman will barter goods for work. If you lived i the Atlanta area, I'd send one of my handymen to your aid! Try thinking outside the box, call on your friends, "Who do you know..." always gives others a chance to step up.

TheHandymanToolbox Need to replace plastic ends on the handle side of the stem, the handle broke and using a wrench to turn handle off/on. The plastic is wearing out. Not sure what brand, pretty old. Would you suggest replacing entire stems and handles?

If this video would've started with a list of tools that he was using instead of just skip and write to them on the stem etc. that would've been much more helpful
