Here is the *real* question that needs to be answered about ALL of Adam's videos: Why are there consistently ca. 30 or 40 people who down-vote his videos? I have watched just about every one of them and the ratio is fairly consistent. Given the level of Adam's expertise as a machinist, the superb camera/editing work, and his even-handed and pleasant disposition, I am going to propose the following as highly probable characteristics about these down-voters: 1. they preface everything they say or write with the opening line, "As a machinist of 30+ years...." 2. their incapacity to appreciate and respect other peoples' achievements is equaled only by a warped sense of self-importance. 3. they are probably miserable and miserable to be around.

I do know that in use, on the gm 4x4s, if the acle nut isn't torqued properly, the hub bearing will fail. Too little or too much will cause a failure. A friend of mine kept going through hubs and axles on his z71. I told him to try to use the right torque instead of just getting them "good n tight". He did and hasnt had a problem in 3 years.

I love watching Adam indicating. I hope I am not the only one who realizes Adam is displaying a master's skill level at doing this. The force he applies with each tap is a combination of experience and manual dexterity, of the highest level. I watch South Main Street Auto, another master at work. Eric O. has in common with Adam, perfect dialog. They both say the most interesting things. Odd because they are both just talking about what they are doing, yet it is intensely enjoyable to listen to. Eric O. is constantly pulling hubs apart and replacing the bearings. So I wondered what Adam was up to here. The at the end Adam explains it. Thirty years ago every auto shop would "turn" your disk. Adam could do that in minutes. But not now. They are throw-away, because is costs less to replace them, than to turn them. Now it is entire hubs.

I wouldn't worry about the distinction between Chevy and GM. GM owns Chevy, and the two brands are mirrors of each other (Sierra = Silverado, Safari = Astro, etc), just with different emblems. Would coolant have helped the carbide last longer?
@thedutchgamerguy8580

in hardened materials mostly coolant isnt used. If you cut that stuff it gets really hot, but then when there is coolant splashing on it cools the insert again. Due to the rapid switching of the temperature the insert will suffer from micro fracturing. So turning hardened stuff, dont use it, better let it get warm but save the insert. mostly air is used when turning hardened stuff, just to blow the chips out.

to hold the flanges... get the proper size locknut for the end of the CV joint.. cut the locking portion off so it freespins. chuck the CV joint into the lathe.. use a live center in the middle of the threads.. you should be really close to zero run out.. now you can slide the tail stock back.. slip the hub on the splines and tighten the nut.. not crazy tight. put the tail stock back up to support the end and you are ready to indicate it. you may end up clocking the hub on the CV splines. this should give you a single set up on each hub.. so you can take the shank end down and the OD and Pilot down.

The bushings have been a PITA though. I was able to get the captive uppers out with a chisel, got one lower bushing out and was just plain dead. My AC in my right shoulder is tore and the bone at the end of my clavicle had to be shaved down from a big bone spur and a piece I broke and walked around for 15 years with. Took them to a shop and they had to fight it to press them back in. Now to do the drivers side and get it aligned. Very cool video though. Making custom parts can be worth a pretty penny for sure. Seeing those GM hub bearings made me recall some sad memories. After three of these hubs failed on my wife's 2008 CTS, she traded it in. Each time there was a failure, a sensor lit up a warning on the dash. At about $950.00CDN a pop, she did not want to wait for the fourth one to fail. Sadly the car only had about 65,000 km on it, just out of warranty when she got rid of it. . How trustworthy are those hubs for racing purposes?
@JohnDoe-bd5sz
5 жыл бұрын
The ECU can not detect a bad bearing, but it CAN detect that the ABS sensor that is nowadays most times incorporated into the hub, is failing. So in reality what you got was a warning that the ABS system could not detect the speed of the wheel due to a failing sensor. On many modern cars that sensor can not be changed without changing the complete hub. This is a hub for a car that either has no ABS or has the sensor seperate from the hub, so they probably wont give any problems.

@@ExilefromCrownHill Honestly, personally on my GM car, i have had to change the hub due to the bearing being worn out, but never because of a faulty sensor. Most sensor fails i see, are due to the wire that connects to the wiring harness, being torn apart or water getting into the connectors. In the old days, when there were "teeth" on the part of the axle joint that you put through the bearing, and the sensor sat in a hole above that, they were MUCH more prone to fail, because they were much less protected. If you have had 3 of 4 sensors go bad, i would suggest that the particular hubs were badly made :)

Great stuff Adam. As an ex-racer and hot rodder this is why I got into machining and bought my first lathe and mill. So I could do things in-house and not have to send them out. Love projects like this and you make it look easy. The shop is lucky to have you so accessible.

I had an old 1950’s Buick drop axle on a home made trailer that used similar Bearings: I wonder why not tapered roller bearings?

The double "tapered" ball bearing style is much easier on the production and r & r of the vehicle. Tapered roller bearings you have to test the roll resistance and all that stuff which takes time, these new ones you slap a nut on and torque it to whatever the factory spec is and you're golden. They both have their pros and cons, but really those new style bearings aren't really any more failure prone than the older tapered roller bearing style in my experience on heavy haul equipment.

Sometimes you use oil when you cut and at other times like this you don’t use any? I would think that you would want to use a lot of oil to help with the cutting on the hard metal.

Abom, you are the bravest man alive to tackle a job like this. Raises many Questions. There must be some advantage for using the GM bearings. I'm wondering if the 3 hole pattern in the flanges will fit the VW steering Knuckle? Will you have to help them machines holes to fit in the steering knuckle? You showed the outer cv joint, I'm assuming you will use the gm axle that fits the splines inside the outer CV joint. I'm wondering how that axle will be fitted into the inner VW CV axle. Will you have to anneal the axle and cut new splines then re harden? That would be fascinating. I hope you charged a fortune. Racing is always super expensive. Nice video as always Abom. Thanks a million for sharing your machining knowledge and technique.

The guys doing these mods are auto mechanics and experience racers so they know what they’re getting into. I’m simply proving the mods they are asking for. Wether it works is in them.

How come oil isn't used with the carbide cutter ?

I think because the heat doesn't affect the carbide tooling like it does with hi speed steel

These bearing races looks so hard for that carbide insert! Isn't ceramic better for this?

I gotta say this is the first video I was happy to only watch you machine one of something. That squeal was awful, but none the less I appreciate the info and the video. Thanks Abom!

doesn't make much of any positive difference when the chip's coming off glowing red. Just fills the shop with smoke and makes the insert chip real fast from thermal shock.

Doing a lot of "eccelictic" work like this, I think the more effecient way to go would be to modify the VW hub flange to take the GM hub.

Adam, how are you planning on balancing this part now what one of the holes is welded up? Drilling four new holes on a 100 mm spacing is going to leave an imbalance.

You may want to face the wheel side of the flange after your done with the bearing land area. The flange is quite flexible and may have distorted from the three bolts acting unequally on it. Really enjoy your channel Adam. Cheers
