I feel so bad that you have to go through all of this....the tape removal looks like a nightmare to take off...so many steps! Luckily you found out how dangerous this stuff is..The good thing though is you sound and look so much better! Good luck!!

That's a real bummer. I've installed the Dynamat sound deadened in a few vehicles and I tell everyone that they should not use the roofing peel and seal as it it gives off a toxic fumes and smell. Folks like to use it and ignore my advice since it's cheap. Good luck and I hope your health improves. Take care!

Can someone please explain what exactly was toxic? Even better - link me to some info about what to avoid please!

Asphalt based stuff is no good - it's banned in new cars since a long time ago. Some butyl stuff may stink too but probably not as bad as asphalt

So when doing major remodels like this Im assuming its a one day thing or if it is NOT then where do you call home during the said renovation of the inside of your van? Thx for the video! cheers!

One way you could have removed it is with dry ice. If you crush the ice and lay it over the sound deadening you can easily break it apart.

good vid. im constantly terrified at what people use in their van builds. outgassing is not in their vocab. that cotton insulation is looking like a viable option from what ive seen so far, probably not good at sound deadening tho
@RennieAsh
8 жыл бұрын
Cotton is a good absorber but is only for mid-high range and for speakers. The downside is that is can absorb water as well which promotes mold etc. You need to either try and spray it with hydrophobic solution or used hydrophobic melamine foam or equivalent. Mass loaded vinyl barrier is a better sound blocker but is heavy

Is that the brand name, peel and seal? If not, what is the name of the product?

Yes there is a product called peel and seal. Don't use any asphalt based stuff in your car.

If it's dark brown burnt oil colour residue it's most likely asphalt based which is banned in cars now for obvious reasons XD

I use Nashua foil tape ( aluminum HVAC tape type ) covering the entire piece of roofing to seal the fumes, The Home Dep sells the tape.

Glad you sorted your mould problem too mate i was a bit worried for you with all your allergies, mould is bad news anyway but worse with allergies. Hey... Instead of busting your knuckles scraping with alcohol and brillo, why not just paint over those areas with that anti-fungus paint you have? It should seal whatever toxic fumes produced by the stick resin left on the deck...

Build a vent that allows a portable AC to vent where it is not noticed. Do this and you can be a better stealth camper but that AC will take a lot of space but nothing looks near as country as a AC in a rear window of a van. Another thing you can do is put in a floor vent to draw air from under your van you want to place your exhaust high where somebody has to really look for it I would place all vents on the D side of the ride since that is away from sidewalks and less opportunity to hear any fans going at it.

Damn, I would have tried to find some way to coat it so fumes cant escape. A few coats of spray paint, then maybe some spray on bed liner like they use in pick up beds. I think that would do the trick as long as you plan on putting flooring or carpet over the spot afterwords. I'd recommend hitting it with spraypaint afterwords anyway. use some rustolium caliper paint (high temp). That'll keep you rust free under there. I'm sure this process involves a bit of scraping the paint off. Good luck brother.
@Tatiacha

+HypnicJerk yeah this would be a good opportunity to spray the whole floor of the van with bedliner that would prevent any moisture from getting to the metal in the future and probably add some sound dampening too.
@RennieAsh

Depends if the bedliner stuff will stink though.
@mactube37
8 жыл бұрын
Rennie Ash bedliner is pretty thick stuff, So you'd have to prime it with something thinner first like rustolium to get a good coat that covers every tiny crevice. Plain old rustolium probably would be fine. I always go overkill on things like this just in case you lost some shielding on the exhaust over the years, high temp caliper paint will ensure you have no issues there.

This is probably late but 3M makes an adhesive remover which is made specifically for what you are doing. It's a one step process. It's available at some auto parts and automotive paint shops. I'm sure it can be found online as well.

Where rubber gloves and use rags or paper towels with (odorless) mineral spirits. Should be much faster than the cleaners your using by a lot. Steel wool is completely wrong, it will be taking up some of your white paint, like sand paper would and you don't want that. Use a fan and blow any fumes away from your breathing them as you work, also.
@DeusVolo

I wonder if TSP Red Devil would make taking the adhesive off any easier than what you are using? I know brake cleaner would take it off in a second with barely having to wipe it off but that stuff is not good to breath in. If you try a can of it get the non chlorinated stuff. It smells less and works just the same. $4 a can

Pro-tip: Automotive paint stores have aircraft thinner. Wear gloves and a mask, spread it in on, park it in the sun for 30 minutes, that shit just bubbles up, wipe it with a paper towel, done. Keep a close eye on it or it will eat through the floor, everything

Use Goo Gone or WD-40!!! It dissolves the adhesive! You will prob need to follow up with a cleaner after to cut the grease but it should be minimal effort to get the stuff off if you use one of those two. You can get a large container of Goo Gone

Ok, so it's very good that you are removing the toxic compounds from your van. But, you are using lots of toxic stuff to do it! You can absorb all the solvents through your skin. Rubbing alcohol has been implicated in causing cancer. Use vodka instead, it's still bad for your liver, but vodka is way less toxic than rubbing alcohol. And you need to use gloves! Plus, the window cleaner is also carcinogenic. Try using cleaning vinegar instead of the window cleaners. Since you are already sick, and have had a toxic overload, you shouldn't be doing this part. See if you can get another person to do this part for you. You could trade your services with him/her by offering to do more of the construction type jobs, that doesn't involve any solvents, sealers, glues, fungicides, pesticides, or mold exposures. Your future is at stake, and the future of your children. You are young, you still have time to change things. Many people in my generation are getting cancer.

Use a proper butyl based damper. Don't use asphalt based if there are any around. Also be wary of cheap ebay butyl deadener as it works, but is prone to slipping in heat and also smells a little - I tried some and now tempted to get some SDS stuff, though it is more expensive.

That little pink scrapper, does that say Oracal on it? IF you plan on using a sound damping material, get audio equipment stuff. Maybe when you get to Oregon. Also there are better materials than Dinamat, a short search and help. There is a KZitem video of thicker stuff, the shop was based in Florida. Thanks for the update dude!

+Rennie Ash If you're referring to the pink scrapper I asked about. It a vinyl applicator, used to smooth out the vinyl and remove air bubbles as best as you can. If you're asking about sound dampening. I plan on using 'New Skin' 2mm. But thats my plan, other people would/could use other stuff. All of it, is very similar
