manufacturers do this on purpose, it is called planned obsolescence. That is why they love this sticky stuff. The inventor may win the Nobel prize some day :-(

Yeah, I use the alcohol prep pads that are used to clean skin before getting an injection. I never did the soaking part. I will try that. I also called it "faux suede" because of the texture. I think rubberized paint is the correct term. There are silicon scrapers that might be safer than the credit card. Thank you for this video!

I think they use it so they don't have to spend more to have a really nice finish on the plastics. Looking at the top of the Thinkpad you can see all the support structures in the plastic that were hidden under the coating. I do wish they would stop using it though. I'm here because my Logitech MX Master mouse - maybe 3 years old, just started to get that slightly sticky feel. I wiped it down with some 91% isopropyl alcohol but was worried when the paper towels turned black. It's better but not quite there. I fear if I do more on it I'll remove all the rubber. Thoughts? Thanks!

Yes, if you insist it will remove the rubber. Once it gets sticky, there is no way back.

They put it on so you will need to replace it sooner..

Hey man, try Zippo lighter fluid. I remove stickers and residue from CD cases all the time, it leaves absolutely zero marks.

I have a couple of old ibm thinkpads with this coating and they are not sticky. Perhaps there are digferences in quality in the coating. But I think overall that thinkpad quality worsened when ibm thinkpad turned into lenovo.

Yup, I also think quality worsened. Also, maybe the inviroment could be a factor for coating degrading or not.

I need to get rid of this sticky stuff from my wireless active noise cancelling headphones which don't really have flat surface for me to use a card to scrape it. Plus I need to be mindful of the various switches & microphone holes on the headphone. Any idea how?

Demand products that do not surface deteriorate. When buying a product it should be clearly stated on a label or on the box that the surface will not deteriorate.

Or at least tell you it's planned life time. For this rubbery stuff it can be even under 2 years.

I think you need to sand it first. Do not spray paint on glossy plastic. Use a sand paper like 800 or 1000 grit
