This saved me so much time. I bought a hull cleaner before this and in two hours it barely removed anything. Used this and I cleaned one side of the boat in less then an hour. Also best thing to use for scrubbing is the end of a broom

That's a hull of a lot of staining! (Bad pun intended) This is my first year owning a boat and I've been learning a lot watching your videos.

I finally got around to washing my boat yesterday and started winterizing it. I have to say that Bar Keepers friend is an amazing product. I mixed about half a can with just enough water to make a soupy paste. I used a rag and washed all the stained areas and let it sit for about 15 minutes. When I rinsed it off the gel coat was pearly white and there was no scrubbing required. There were a few areas where the hull was scratched from docking so I used a Scotchbrite Pad and BKF, not only did it remove the marks but it also left the surface nice and smooth. I'm going to give the boat another good wash and wax next. Keep up the great videos.

Hey Wayne, thanks for making such a great video & being so honest! Boats are tricky- but an investment of time & memory making. I love Bar Keepers Friend and Dawn Dish Soap; but they are not good for your boat! They both remove all of the sealants and protection of the clear coat, and bar keepers friend actually has acid in it to break down your build up on the hull along with scouring abrasives that etch the surface of your gel coat Or fiberglass! So while it looks nice & clean unless you’re applying a new layer of clear coat and then applying wax or ceramic finish it is leaving microscopic etched cuts all in the surface of the boats paint. So if each week/month that it sits in the elements it will become more & more likely to attract dirty grime & growth that will make the paint discolored and hazed. Mr Clean sponges do a similar thing to gelcoat & are not good for boats, but seem to be so much easier than all the elbow grease of a detail. Somethings are worth the money: products for fiberglass are not cheap. A good boat detailer only uses good products even if it is just Acids, compounds, Vinegar & Pine Soap-there is a methodology to make the boat last for years and keep it from needing to be repainted and repaired constantly. Don’t use cheap fuel, cheap products to keep her clean or skip a good annual service!

Vinegar gets bio matter off hulls. My friend had a motor yacht he used on the French canals. When he hot back to the UK on the hard, he noticed a white Mark's all over the hull. Foxes marina sold him a number of hull cleaners. Non removed it. Even when using an electric polisher. Vinegar removed it in seconds. No damage to get coat.

Vinegar is my favorite, but it didn't touch this river water staining.

That white stuff was probably calcium. Vinegar will do the trick. The calcium on my hull was exposed to sun light (only that side was heavily stained). Did not come off with vinegar but came right off with hydrochloric acid mixed with water. Sprayed on with a handpump, waited 15mins and rinsed off. Careful with trailer and metals (like the drive), the stains wont come out.

I found what worked well for me on getting the hard water stains off was a cutting compound on a polishing wheel like you would use on oxidized gel coat.

That seems like a lot of work - but then again if you're going to be waxing the hull - it's probably a good starting point!

Wayne, barkeepers friend also comes in a liquid form, like soft scrub. I use it in my kitchen, but didn’t think of using it on my old boat. I will this Spring.

@@WayneTheBoatGuy for what ever reason I've used the liquid Barkeeper and it does not work as well. I'm going to try the powder on my boat today. Thank you for your video, I've used this product for 30 years in my house but never tried it on my boat.

Hi Wayne, started boating some months ago and had the same challenge and opinion on the prices of hull cleaners. I used a liquid that is used to get black spots (mold) out of wood. It contains a lot of oxalic acid. Mix it with water 50-50 in a handpump and spray on the hull. Wait 15 mins and rinse off. Worked like a charm with much less elbow grease and low cost. My hull was also covered with calcium. Nothing helped. Just mixed in some hydrochloric acid, used the handpump and it came right off. Rinse well, it is not good for the gelcoat nor trailer. Thanks for posting, keep up the good work. Just subscribed!

Wayne thanks for the great video! Any idea how long a boat can stand or be docked in salt water without hull paint? I presume since you mostly use your boat in fresh water . You can keep it docked much longer before algae starts growing.
@WayneTheBoatGuy

It's brackish water here - and we get the brown staining and barnacle growth within a few days. I would be hesitant to be docked in saltwater for more than a week without bottom paint. If you're using it regularly, and the conditions are ok it can go longer.

I use Oxalic Acid to treat my Honey Bees for Verroa Mites. I use a vaporizer. You have to use a respirator with this stuff. They sell it cheaply as a wood cleaner. Thanks for the tip. now I know what to use. Have you tried it to clean stains from your seats yet?

It looks like a great product to use. I can't tell from the video if the powder is abrasive and scratches the gelcoat at all? I am guessing if it did u would mention it. LMK

Wink works very good to clean stains off and you don't need to scrub and it is not a acid. When finished you need to sand and raise your bottom paint. The river water should not be sitting on the white surface of the hull.
