Thank you making this video my gramps taught me when I was little but I forgot and he's recently passed away so had no way of finding out. I'm just starting out collecting :)

do you use a book to stick your stamp onto the paper, often with plastic on the backside or do you use a book to put your stamps into some rows of plastic inside a book? The firs tone tend to be use din old collections or in the USA, i don't know a lot of this method and i dislike this method. My method is the second one and i use black books with clear plastic rows. 1. you should soak the stamps depending on the colour of the paper, attached to your stamps. red envelops for example tend to give of their colour, same with other colours. So create 3 categories. a) white-grey papers b) brown paper, cardboard c) special colours, plastic, 2. if you use hot water, the dissolvant effect get stronger, so you may remove the stamps faster and easier, BUT the paper of the envelope gives off the colour faster, this is dangerous for b and c 3. So use hot water in big groups for a, but medium (still hot, but you may put your fingers into it) water for b or in smaller groups, to reduce the effect for these stamps. 4. The C category is difficult, it would be the best to use a lot of containers, put a single stamp in all containers, use hot water to secure, that they will come loose in seconds and remove the stmap fast from the dangerous discoloured water. OR you use a big container of a lot of hot water to reduce the effect of the paper, because it has to discolour more water. I recommend the second solution by a large group of c stamps or in cases of important stamps. Some plastic envelops react to hot water, some stamps on paper, that WILL discolour the water should be removed with cold water in a big container over a long time to reduce the discolouring reaction and minimize the discolouring effect. 5. All these points become irrelevant for self-adhesive stamps. Some of the American, irish, Italian and French stamps have nearly non-solvable glue on the backside. Its a trend since ~2015. It is nearly impossible to prevent discolouring by a self-adhesive american Forever stamp on a red envelope. In my XP the best version seem to be to use adhesive remover and than to stick book-repairing sticky-tape (without acid in them) onto the back, if it remains to be sticky after removing the paper. 6. In my method, a curled up stamp is not a problem, because my book will pressure the stamp by the storing method itself over time to a flat regular stamp. It gives to me the advancement, that i may simply put the wet, dissolved from paper, stamps on regular newspaper-sheets. Dont put them on the picture side regularly on the paper, but turn them around, so that you may easily inspect them, if they still stick on the backside. In this method the stamp will get curled up, but it will protect the actual picture side with this effect and you are able to make your collection-book do the work to flatten your stamps. 7. The method in this video is fine with this kind of paper, but it may happen, that some of the paper will stick to the stamp, newspaper-sheets are more resistente to water than these paper-towels and most of these newspapers actively try to prevent an effect, that the printing or paper of the newspaper stick to other paper. So you can use the interest of the newspaper to design such an useful paper for their goals to have a semi-resistent news-paper delivered to readers, for your advancement to get wet stamps dried with a dry sheet of semi-resistnet paper. I never encountered any problems. But it could depend on the quality of your regional news-paper. 8. just let the stamps dry out on the air and remove them from the news-paper-sheet by lifting the sheet up over a container of your choice for the stamps. Some stamps may stick to the news-paper, so use your Tweezers and go below the stamps to remove them.

If you put hot water in the bowl.. it will be done in a few seconds. 30 seconds or so.. I did this with 1000s of stamps.

Procedures for water-based adhesive (lickable) stamps only. Don't overcrowd your bowl and change water frequently to avoid glue residue being left on stamps. Handle the wet stamps as little a possible to avoid damage. Use a quality uncoloured paper towel with few ridges, printing, or embossing to avoid wrinkles or transferred ink on the dried stamps. You can usually reuse the same toweling several times once dry. Mallard -- did you notice the hinge remnant left in the bowl? Looks like a collector used a stamp from their album to mail off a letter.

You don't have to let it soak for 30 minutes, it only takes a few seconds. Just saturate the back of the paper, cold tap water is fine, peel the stamp then rub your thumb in a circular motion to remove paper residue. You may have even better luck by mashing the water into the paper with your finger

extra tips ? >>>>>> use handwarm water. Cold water will prolonge the process, hot water on the other hand will risk losing coloration. Dry stamps on a towel, stampfront down, adhesive site up. A lot of (mostly classic) stamps will keep the adhesive coating on the back. Paper will stick back on the stamp, so I never use paper to completely dry (paper can be a quick intermediate phase to absorb water before further drying on a towel). I never use weights on stamps during the drying process (again, adhesive site can stick even on a towel by using extra weight)... Don't worry about stamps not being flat. It will be OK later after collecting them in an album or putting weight on them after the complete drying phase... Use a lot of water and never put too many stamps in one batch (to keep water clean)... Start the process immediate. Some stamps will come off very quick, some will take longer... Find the easy ones to remove first.... My only question : is chlorine free water better then directly used tap water (?)...Since chlorine may case "bleaching" or loss of color...(?)...
