Great video, thank you!!! I have been edging and digging out very dry sod with a pointed spade. I've always wondered 'why a fork?' (growing up on a farm a fork was used to clean out gutters and throw hay). Now, thanks to you and this video, life is much easier. Also, I have been watering for a few hours the area of sod I intend to remove which changes the cement-like sod to a less back breaking task.

Have a small tip or two that helped me when I opened up an area for growing potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips and beetroots and might make similar jobs a bit easier in the future. Instead of using the garden fork you can use a cheap isolation knife and cut under the grass and then remove it. You can also use a small garden cultivator instead of the small spade to remove the soil from underneath the grass.

LOL. In Dallas, our Bermuda grass roots go down 1.2+ meters to seek water. We have to saturate the area with Roundup to kill everything to the root endings, and then take top off. However, "nature hates a vacuum," so adjacent Bermuda roots detect water from the cleared area and invade back the space with a vengeance. We have to do raised flower beds or fight a never ending Bermuda grass battle.
If you're not in a hurry and for small areas you can cover the area with a tarp for 2-3 years and then most things will be dead after that. Sure you will still have to put up a barrier around the area to hinder the grass to get back into the cleared area. That usually works for even the most persistent weeds that can otherwise take over your whole garden if you're not keeping it under control. It might be a bit more environmentally friendly way to do it since Roundup is not very healthy both for the people that apply it and for bees.

Great random video that one 👍 I must admit I've always used the spade to dig up the turfs. Must try the fork technique instead, looks far easier 😊 A note of caution though, not so much for yourself Andy, but for other people reading this. Sometimes there may be covenants on strips of land bordering a driveway or highway, that mean they aren't actually owned by the homeowner but are retained by the city or county council because submerged utilities could be routed through them. If in doubt always refer to your deeds, they'll be highlighted on them.
@GosforthHandyman

Yes, that is true. Our town has that between where backyards meet so a homeowner is at risk of having to remove anything (like a fence), if the city has to get at the area. According to our city, a fence or structure is supposed to be 6 feet back from the property line anyway. I think it's rude of an adjoining backyard neighbor putting up a fence right on the property line anyway if you're supposed to be 6 feet back. It leaves us with a narrow area because of their 6 foot tall stockade fence running along the length property line, insread of us both having a green area between the backyards.

@GosforthHandyman

I wouldn't like to guarantee it - some weeds, especially dandelions, are almost indestructible. What you might be able to do, and a gardener might be able to confirm, is kill the grass and weeds with roundup, leave it for a couple of months and then turn it over and put soil over the top. The dead grass should just compost itself and the roundup will be long gone by then. I think - someone who knows about this stuff would need to confirm! 👍👍

I then did the back breaking side jabbing with the spade to cut through the roots under the sod to lift it. Loosening the sod using the fork is a far easier way. Duh, why didn’t I think of that?😂😂.
