As the owner of a 98 year old house I can confirm that these cracks are very frustrating. I've used the procedure you've shown here many times but honestly I've found that cracks reappear in the same amount of time whether tape has been used or not. To save the hassle of applying new tape after a crack has reappeared I just dig out the V with a can opener and fill with a mixture of EZsand45 and diluted carpenters glue....then sand, prime and paint as usual. If the house is still settling the crack will show up again without fail whether tape is applied or not. Unfortunately there's no permanent cure for the issue if structural members are moving or going through expansion and contraction. The building materials industry has to figure out how to provide float for wall and ceiling panels....not holding my breath.

Unfortunately there are many factors that can cause cracking from temperature to structural issues even bad board placement. You could always try installing a expansion joint, not always aesthetically pleasing but should definitely put a end to the cracking

Looks great - A very thorough job. Personally I've found that if I cut the V groove, then make holes every 6" I can pin the sheets with Soudal expanding foam, then trim it when it's cured and fill the crack flush with the boards. It's paintable within a few hours and requires less material and time. I should add, I'm not a dry waller, but a decorator. You clearly know what you're doing.

I'm pretty sure that you can get durabond in easy sand so you can eliminate the slow drying of the USG or just the ready mixed

If it cracked the drywall itself you may have been better off putting an expansion joint in it. Nice job with the mud and tape though.

Wow I was wondering what type of expansion joint would you put in it are you talking about just the plastic edging or are you talking about taking out the sheetrock to do it
@gregcollins7277

@@arlenmargolin4868 you cut a sliver out of the drywall where the crack is and you put a vinyl v shaped in it's place. The v shape allows for flexibility if there is movement in the wall or ceiling. Most jobs with high walls and long spans pit expansion joints in every 20 to 25ft to avoid the wall cracking.

Hey Greg, I completely agree on the expansion joint! Unfortunately customers don't like the "look" of them

Obviously it was a color match so I’m assuming customer had that “paint.” I only use Benjamin Moore products. Surprised 2 coats got that to look right.

Yes the customer still had the same paint and was painted recently! Benjamin Moore is my go to when purchasing Paint and Primer

@@dufferindrywall3876 I have lots of led pics, that's the only way you'll see no blemish. I did notice there was a light used, but the shine from led gives out all imperfections. I can take my light, on a painted wall, and find the mudding line. Works great for stud location, and to feather out the mud. I'm almost 50...34yrs in the industry, and you'll learn way more tricks than I will now. Saw a tape and mud layer....it'll only be as good as the guy with the paddle, but a great invention I never had.
