This may be an old video, but I'm still so thankful for you for sharing. A piece my mom and dad (now deceased) made together recently broke and my mother was horrified. She's ecstatic that I get to be the one who fixes it. A true multigenerational piece :) Thank you again.

I've agreed to repair a piece for a friend of mine and stumbled upon your video. Made me laugh that this was posted 9 years ago and yet has been the most helpful video I've found to repair this copper foil piece. Thank you!!

Thank you for taking the time to make this video! I am new to stained glass, but two people that found out each had favorite pieces that had broken - thankfully they should be very easy fixes compared to what you are working with, but I was still nervous (one is a family heirloom of sorts). Feeling much more confident about the process now! Yay!

Thank you so much! Just broke a piece today. An edge piece and a piece in the middle. It was not yet framed, so I am thankful for that. My instructor showed me this technique a few months ago, but I needed a refresher. I now feel much more hopeful that I can repair it.

Thank you for a great demonstration. I was weeping yesterday because a 3D project I had just finished got damaged and I couldn't figure out how I was going to repair it. This video was exactly what I needed.

+Michael Kenney I am **SO** glad this helped you!!!! Believe me, I feel your pain. I have so many students who bring in projects that have been knocked over by a mischievous cat, or bashed-in by a family member who threw a ball indoors, etc...it's good to know how to do a repair when Things Go Wrong. Thanks a million for watching!

Super helpful video, thank you! Quick question-if there is patina on the solder, do i need to use steel wool to remove it before unzipping the solder and copper foil? Thanks again!
@LadyBerz
Жыл бұрын
No need! It just will stink a bit more, especially if the window is older. Use a good amount of flux while you are 'unzipping.'

Shipped a panel to my uncle and the corner broke! This video is definitely helpful, BUT it has a zinc came boarder. Do you have any videos or advise on how to go about replacing the corner piece!?
@LadyBerz
9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately the zinc came needs to be removed before replacing the piece. The zinc may die in the process, though.:( When shipping, though, use lots and lots of bubble wrap, and a really big box! ( I have some experience with breakage during shipping….)

Do you have to remove the entire window for one small piece? That seems like it would be a bit extreme and/or more expensive and labor intensive. Especially if it’s a large window.
@LadyBerz
7 ай бұрын
Yes, it is labor intensive, because most stained glass is installed in front of a plain window. To repair, access from both sides is needed. Maybe there are experts out there who can masterfully do a repair in situ... Most folks leave the small cracks, though. Adds character! Mine had about 8 cracked pieces and a BB hole. I wasn't going to live with that! haha. :)

Hi, I was wondering what you would do if the foil on the other surrounding pieces were pealing off? Would you take the whole piece or would you just add foil?
@LadyBerz
9 жыл бұрын
+Tia Rose Although it is tricky, I would just add foil to those places where it's coming off. Be sure to clean and dry off the area really well (no flux residue,) so the foil sticks well. Then continue the repair of the missing piece. Hope that helps!

Quick question on the disassembly. Is there too much solder involved to use a braided wick to remove the solder?
@LadyBerz

You can certainly try using the de-soldering wick, but it just didn't work for me.

What do you do to repair a globe? I have a big 24 “ lamp top that fell and split on one side. I can’t get the prices to come back together😊
@LadyBerz
Жыл бұрын
Oh man….that’s a tough one. This is a way bigger job than I can really explain here, but it is possible to use these same techniques to break out and fix the worst pieces first. In my opinion: I’d start by putting on some work gloves for protection, and by hand, try reshaping the shade back into the dome- wherever you can. As for the split, you may have to use some muscle, and possibly some duct tape to bring the halves as close together as you can. Strap some tape across as a temporary hold. Aim to fix the largest pieces first that can bridge the split. Try using a large cardboard box stuffed w/ crumpled newspaper to prop and support the shade for soldering. It’s ok to leave smaller pieces cracked! Just fix the worst pieces. Best of luck to you. I welcome any viewers to make better/ further suggestions on this type of repair!

Why don’t you set a large old cardboard box underneath to capture all the glass and solder?

You mentioned that you didn't want to remove the solder from the large blue piece. Why is that?
@LadyBerz
9 ай бұрын
In order for that big blue piece to come out by just trying to melt the solder, you’d have to get that entire seam to be at the melting point all at the same time. It’s not really possible with that big a piece. Breaking the piece out is easier. If it’s a small panel or edge piece, you sometimes can just melt the solder til the piece falls out/off. Just not a panel this size.

A bit slow and my question is about possibly repairing cracks in the glass?
@LadyBerz
2 жыл бұрын
Any time there are cracks in your (finished and soldered) glass pieces, your options are to a) leave them there and live with the cracks (that's a tough decision for me) or b) break the pieces out and replace them like I show in this video. There may be a way to run some sort of glue inside the crack to keep it more sturdy, but I don't know of a way to do that neatly and without drawing more attention to the crack.....
