Thanks for that - it let me fix three of my old chargers. Didn't know heat shrinking sleeves can stretch that much! I found chopsticks to be a great tool for the job - initially put thin ends of chopsticks inside tube from the opposite sides of the tube and then push them inside all they way until tube ends on the tick ends of sticks. Then just stretch it a bit more by crossing and flexing sticks and you get perfect size for MagSafe2.
5 жыл бұрын
Great to hear that! The chopsticks are the best! One of the previous game-changing comment may help with this demanding workflow: "There are shrinking tubes with 3:1 and 4:1 shrinking ratio, not only 2:1. Something like 12/3 would require four times less efforts to pull Magsafe2 through".

LONG NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS work the BEST! Insert the head of the pliers into the tube and then open the pliers. The handles of the pliers give you the leverage and control you need to stretch the tube without breaking/tearing. I can stretch a tube in about 30 secs with the needle nose pliers versus other methods.

Thank you for the idea... I've done this today to fix my magsafe. I use 5mm heatshrink tube. I found that stretching it using long nose pliers can be much faster. Lesson learnt: Just be careful while cutting your tube using sharp scissors, you must avoid tearing the sides because the tear will grow bigger and damage the tube while stretching.
5 жыл бұрын
Longnose pliers are the most effective tool for that job! 100%! Shrinking tube in diameter of 5mm is fine. There are two different types of tubes, low and high quality. The high-quality heat shrinking tubes are easier to stretch (even with chopsticks). The low-quality ones are made with the kinda shiny material/plastic. The better quality tubes are matt (they look and feel similar to the new Apple cords). The high-quality tubes are more expensive, and hard to find, but worth it! There are also tubing with adhesive (more expensive than regular). I need to test those tubes with a layer of adhesive!
@mfauzilkamil

I noticed that it is moving if pulled. So, I wrap springs from used ballpens on both connector cable and box cable to strengthen them. I think sewing threads will also works. I've made a second layer of heatshrink tube on it. When the tube shrunken, it will grip the spring tight and will not move. I don't think i need any adhesive since it won't move anymore when pulled.

I didnt think of this until after doing my repair but if your worried it wont shrink down all the way tight cuz you stretched it so big then you could put something under the tube to make it tight again. Idk what the best option would be though to maintain uniformity. Electrical tape under it might make the repair look more scuffed

Maybe use electrical tape but lengthwise down the wire and dont wrap it 100% around, just 90% then the shrink wrap can bridge the small gap and it should look more or less perfectly circular

Thats a great repair method that I have never seen or though of before in many years in electronics. Well Done. BTW never attempt to fix these cables by splitting the transformer its too time consuming and may well damage it. If you need to join the cable in the middle solder the conductors after sliding thin heat shrink over then then heat shrink. Its even better if a larger heat shrink is brought down over the others.

I've an issue with my plug guess I think it's short bcz whenever I plug-in the charger the plug (attaching to the Mac) gets extremely hot within seconds Can you tell how to open that plug and correct the wires
@el_micha
Жыл бұрын
My MacBook Pro 15" Mid-2015 always tends to get hot, esp. if the device is used at the same time as charging it. This is the most stress you can put on the power supply since it needs to put out a significantly higher amperage than when just charging and not using the laptop. So since the aluminum body of the Macbooks is designed to act as a heat sink, it is normal it gets quite hot near the charging port. That aside, try to borrow another charger to see if the same symptoms are showing. If not, then your charger should be defective. There is a tutorial on the website iFixit how to cut off a damaged part of the cable and re-solder the inner wires to the plug. It is not too easy tho and requires quite some skill. Good luck either way, my friend!

Yes, you may use a hairdryer, heat gun, or some other source of heat. One of my viewers made the repair with a toaster to heat up the tubing 😃 Sky's the limit, but the safety always must be a number one of priority 🤓

Why don't you went for 20mm diameter heat shrinking tube?
6 жыл бұрын
The heat shrinking tubes shrink something about twice. It's simple math. 20mm divided by twice is 10mm. We need 3mm. Why? The MagSafe cord diameter is 3mm as you can see at 0:10. I use 4.8mm shrinking to 2.4mm because I wanna to wrap the cord as much as possible. Also, the 4.8mm tubing can hold stretching to MagSafe plug size (this flat and bigger one). You may use tubing up to 6mm, but 4.8mm is the best way to make this repair, at least in my opinion.

Mine stopped working as the rubber part of the cable broke- the part coming out of the square part which links to the macbook. The tiny wires inside are frayed- what needs to happen for it to work again? I had to buy new charger from apple as I need my macbook. £80 down the drain.. !
6 жыл бұрын
Unluckily... s*%$&t happens. If you bought new MagSafe, you can *prevent* from another breaking with this method. Just put shrinking tube on new MagSafes cable, on both sides. Like the wise man said: _an ounce prevention is worth a pound of cure!_

I'm surprised. Is it electrical tape or regular? If it is electrical, i guess it may be a fault of a this specific tape. Buy premium quality electric tape and it will be fine or use shrinking tube without tape.

This is a great idea to fix cables. You can speed it up dramatically by using plyers as per this page ... www.wikihow.com/Expand-Heat-Shrink-Tubing. With this video and that technique it reduced the time to 20 seconds to fix a cable!

what was the diameter of your tubing
4 жыл бұрын
Buy shrinking tube (2:1) in diameter of 4.8 mm (up to 6.4 mm) shrinking to 2.8 mm (up to 3.2 mm) It's important. There are two different types of tubes, low and high quality. The high-quality heat shrinking tubes are easier to stretch. The low-quality ones are made with the kinda shiny material/plastic. The better quality tubes are matt (they look and feel similar to the new Apple cords). The high-quality tubes are more expensive, and hard to find, but worth it! There are also tubing with adhesive (more expensive than regular). In the description of this video, you'll find more information. There is also a 3:1 ratio, so you may consider buying this tubing. I bought tubing in a local hardware store (electrical department). Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Try to heat up the tube. But just a little bit, before and when you will be stretching the tube. Older ones are tough to stretch. The small amount of heat may do more flexible tubing. Or maybe you should try with the new one from the different hardware store.

Can't I just use larger-sized shrink tube?
6 жыл бұрын
The MagSafe's cord diameter is 3mm, the plug is 17mm wide and 5mm high. Heat shrinking tubes shrinks twice. If you wanna wrap the cord tightly as it possible (to fix frying cable) you need shrinking tube up to 6mm. Simple math, 6 divided by 2 equal 3. If you use larger-sized tube it won't work. The tube after heating won't wrap the cable. You just need to stretch the tube instead of larger-sized ones.
@ricardorezende9991
