What drill are you using? Does it ever make sense to dig out all the original tape, and start over?
@vancouvercarpenter
5 жыл бұрын
It's a Hilti cordless drywall drill. Yes it is a good idea to remove the old tape sometimes. Especially if the old joint was not very flat. That will help to not build it out too much. I don't often remove the tape though because its a lot of work and messy. I can easily float a joint out pretty wide and I just find that to be less work than digging out the tape. But for many folks it will be easier to remove the tape than to float a wide joint.

As a DIYer I've made so many mistakes with drywall. And that's even after watching KZitem videos. I think that from now on(after learning from you) my work will be much better. I own a custom home building company and have been in the industry for 25+ years. I am actually working on a repair I decided to do myself. I have seen a zillion patches in homes and never have I seen this level of detail. The patches don’t always look very good and now I understand why. Well Done Sir!! Thank You for the video!!! Let me just say that as a guy that did this for four years, I think your skills are phenomenal!! I love your videos because they're so informative. You explain things so well and give the reasons for why you do it your particular way. Also, this should give people a good idea of why it costs more to do a job that will last a lifetime instead of having to be fixed again in a couple of years. GREAT JOB!!

I'm a DIY homeowner and I did my basement drywall myself. I used Fibafuse for the basement, but ran out near the end. I taped the last few joints with paper tape I had to save the cost of buying a whole new roll of Fibafuse. The paper joints had problems. I wanted to let other homeowners know that for a beginner the Fibafuse is much easier to get right. I also wanted to say thanks for all the drywall videos. I could have never completed a professional level job without your help. Who knew you have to thin down the mud so much

I 'm a retired carpenter/drywaller and I still do little stuff from time to time and I tried your glue-water mixture with smoothset along with the fibertape for doing some patches and will see how well it all dries up. I do like the process and how well the tape lays down with the fibertape. Cool idea! Even an old dog can learn to use new tech and tricks! Thanks!

You need to get a lamp on a stand that you can move to cast an angle beam on the wall. This will highlight and shadow what you're doing. Your explanation is spot on and you're trying to convey your work. But white mud on white wall at a distance with a static camera doesn't do you justice. (They contour and shape surf boards with light. Maybe the same effect can help with your visual whilst teaching?) Thanks . I'm glad I found your channel.

Lol, your quick fix with the fast set reminded me of a drywall job in a condo building that had a sprinkler line go on the fourth floor and flooded out halls and lots of units, So when we were reboarding the hallways we had stacks in front of each unit of 5/8ths sheets tilted on the walls as the halls were only 5 feet wide etc. There was a new guy we hired after using a temp service, well he decided he'd tilt out a stack of about 20+ x 5/8th sheets leaning on a wall to look behind them and it went beyond the tipping point and no way the little guy could stop it, he went across the hall, between the studs and into somebody's kitchen through the interior 5/8th drywall, getting the call I popped in to see what happened, ended up cutting an 8x4 chunk out of their cracked and bunged up wall, resecured/reboarded and had it taped coated/floated and paint ready within 2-3 hours using 5/20 minute fast set.. you can do a lot with hotmud real quick if need be. Tons of koolaid man jokes after that. Oooh Yeeeeaaah

I've tried this method on my own condo. It always showed a crack within a year. Ripping out the tape and redoing it from scratch then using a drywall primer on my new (better) tape finally fixed it. Edit: I used the super thick, almost cardboard, tape, as I had tons of that. I used 1 of 2 primers I just have around...probably the clear stuff: Zinsser Gardz. Standard pre-mixed mud: USG Plus 3.

I really enjoy your videos because you do everything I do at my jobs. And you actually know what you're doing. I feel like a lot of drywall videos on YT the person isnt even a pro. 🔴Patchjobs like this I try to knock them out in 30-45minutes no more than an hour unpacking and packing up. I texture monterey drag/Knockdown with a round brush. I dab the mud on the wall and knock it down. For orange peel, that's simple enough to spray with a hopper or a lot of the time I'll buy a $12 orange peel Homax can from Walmart and spray it. One and done. Great videos though! 🔴💣💥

Hey, that's great, you are the first person using "my" repair technique...LOL. I originally came up with this method, while trying to repair all cracked up horse hair plaster walls in New England in the late 90s and have been using it since then. For minor cosmetic repairs I now use Sheetrock Easy Sand 90 but for structural, under stress repairs always the original Sheetrock DuraBond 90 and Weldbond glue (1 part to 4-5 parts of water as it says on the container) and no need for paper or fiberglass tape with the DuraBond/WeldBond mix, it sets much stronger then the drywall itself, just have to make sure that the first fill is thin enough for the glue to soak into the drywall surface to create a strong bond or you can always brush glue/water mix onto the dry repair place first...and always finish with EasySand 90, DuraBond/WeldBond is practically impossible to sand... Half inch wide and several feet long jugged structural cracks going from the ceiling onto the wall repaired with DuraBond/WeldBond mix are still perfectly fine some 20+ years later...

Something I do to help find those pesky flaws before painting is walk around with a painter's light. These lights have a spring / clamp that will grip the back of a chair or ladder or even a broomstick. Just place it close to the wall and all of the points needing attention will be super obvious as it makes the shadows stand out more. Doing a ceiling? Clamp the light on the top of an open door or window to cast the light up there as close as possible without adding more clutter to your work space.
