That is a classic champ. Even these black face ones have that midrange sound the champ is known for.

My dad bought a Champ Amp exactly like this for me back in 1967. I loved that amp but wished I had something bigger. Today, I wish I still had that little amp. BTW, a big thank you for adding a guitarist play through it at the end of this video!! .....Russell D. - Olympia, KB6YAF

Wow. Now I really want one of those amps. Thanks a 1 X 10^6 for walking us through both the logic and the practice of tracking down and eliminating noise and hum from guitar tube amps.

I just finished converting a SF Champ to BF specs. I installed new Mercury PT and OT. And I installed new Weber speaker exactly like the one in this amp. However, the client had installed a Sovtek 5Y3 which has the same voltages as a 5AR4/GZ34. When I install a JJ 5Y3, presto-chango, lower voltages. I still had to install a 10K, and 27K dropping resistors to get the plate voltages down to BF levels. I also had to use a 510R and a 120R bias resistors in series to get the dissipation down to about 11 watts. I installed a new CE-Dist. filter can. She sounds great and is nice and quiet. I told the client to t=dump that Sovtek tube. It must have been cooking that poor EH 6V6. Thanks again Terry for the great videos.

I don't know if it's the way this was recorded or not but that sounded really good, much better than some of the other amps demoed on this channel. No offense meant. I used to have a vibro champ, great amps!

Further hum reduction could be accomplished by rewiring the 12AX7 and 6V6 heater supply circuit with a couple additional pieces of wire (or better yet, a tightly twisted-pair of wires) and the addition of a filament-winding centertap. The amp chassis is stupidly used as the "return" conductor for the 6 volt AC supply to the 6v6 and 12ax7 tube heaters! Disconnect (remove) the bare ground wire from pin 9 of the 12ax7, and also remove the bare wire to ground from pin 7 of the 6V6; then connect the previously grounded ( usually green) filament-winding wire to the 6v6 and add a wire to extend it over to pin 9 of the 12ax7. The amps' tranny may already have an unused center-tap wire taped up inside the amp (this unit does!), and if so, ground it. Otherwise, you will need to make an artificial centertap with a pair of identical resistors (100 ohm or so, exact value not critical), as often seen in many other silverface Fenders in particular, connected from each leg of the filament winding to ground (easiest to do this at pins 2 and 7 on the 6v6). oh shit, I almost forgot, the pilot light bulb has only one wire going to it and the other end of the bulb is grounded, and so you will need to remove that chassis ground connection to the lamp and run an extra wire over to that socket as well. For what its worth, the pilot lamp as found here is actually the first link in the heater-supply chain.....although it doesn't specifically have to be. Just dont loop any heater-supply wires near the input jacks or the preamp circuitry, or you will get more hum.

That's very important. You never should use the chassis as a ground path. Specially for the HT.

Great Job,Terry!Love your videos'!I have an old "tweed-Champ",from the late 50s'! I still need to get the bypass caps' in.I got some caps' that look like the originals'.Already re-caped the power supply.This Champ is very unusual,as it has the output-transformer mounted on the speaker!The wires' to the output go through a grommet,instead of the usual "r.c.a" plug, in the chassis! I have never seen another "Champ" exactly like this one?

I've had a lot of those Raytheon 17mm blackplate12AX7's go very microphonic. It's sad because they sound amazing. I use them for phase inverters of tremolo tubes when they start to squeal.

I also love watching you restore vintage Fender tube amps, especially since I have a couple of them. But today I have a question about your "scope: what's up with the flashing "clouds" on the scope. It really made it hard to see what you were measuring, particularly the "noise" spikes.

is the 12ax7 swappable? I have a silverface and i can see the 2 tubes in the middle are easily swappable but the 12ax7 seems like it is not. I dont even know if it is actually a tube, the one in the far right,
@scottym3
4 жыл бұрын
the tube on the far right is the 12ax7, you'll need to take off the thin metal casing in order to get to the tube. but on my spec sheet in the amp (a silverface also, 1980) it says to use a 12ax7a. I'm not sure if there is much difference between the two but yes, they are swappable. I just ordered new tubes last night and got each tube that is recommended on that spec sheet.

Question terry .I have a silverface bassman .if i wanted to a triode from a pentode all i would have to do is put a switch to open up the screen grids? Yes or no?
@d-labelectronics

Nope, The screen is tapped to the Plate voltage. Loss of screen will shut down the tube. I would not recommend doing this

I just got a 66' just like this. Should I replace all the caps if I want it to perform at top capability? Or will recapping the power supply get it done?
@freecitizen2760
4 жыл бұрын
Matt Nadolski : Change all the electrolytics (polarized caps) should be changed along with that main filter cap can. Even if they don’t leak, sooner or later they will. If the others are those “brown turds”, then dump them. Personally, I’d buy three of those Blue Sozos, a 0.1 and two 0.047’s, and one 250 pf Silver Mica cap (for the preamp tone stack). You could easily do all of this yourself, but ... * Never work on a tube amp unless you know how to discharge the capacitors safely.

Actually, at least I hear 120 Hz hum. That definitely means PSU issues (bad caps). 60 Hz (here in Europe, 50 Hz) hum is usually a grounding issue.
