Thanks. I followed this video and fixed my problem with a £13 replacement sensor from ebay and a bit of patience. A 2012 Mini Cooper. Getting the windscreen wiper arms off was the only real challenge and not so easy as the video implies. If not removed before (and after a few years) the will need some encouragement to come away from the conical splines they sit on. There isnt much space to get behind them to life them from the splines. I recommend a ball joint puller (£12 in Halfords) and especially for the drivers side wiper which has less clearance from the raised bonnet so you dont want to scratch the paintwork. But a bit of patience and this video does the trick. Thanks

I finally got around to doing this lol, the replacement part has been sitting on the shelf since Xmas! I used adjustable ole grips to remove the wipers, they came off pretty easily in the end! The hardest part for me was getting the panels back on, but I got there in the end. Also when i remove the sensor there was a bit of air coming out (Or in) I guess as it's a vacuum switch that's normal?

I had the engine light looked at by garage and said ok to drive but it’s booked in soon to be properly looked at. However I now have this stop start warning light and my car is turning its engine off when out in the road! Also experiencing some power loss at times too! When this happens usually the rpm is very erratic after pressing d start button. My local BMW shop doesn't seems to know what they are doing other than charging me for replacing other working parts that does not even fix the issue. Do you have a video of the interior light in the R56 from 2008. The part of the light from the heater and window switches doesn't work. Also the hazard button doesn't work, the light of it burns. Does the part of the window switches have light? I can't remember ever seen this. From the heater and fan I know it is. The rest of the interior lights all work and also the fuses on the right side at the passengers side are all ok. Do you have experience with this, maybe a video about it? Gr Erwin

Thank you, this is great. I've had a 2014/15 plate Cooper S for three years. The Auto Start Stop feature stopped working a few months after I got it and the mini dealer that sold us the car identified it as a faulty vacuum switch. They quoted a lot of money to fix it and, given that I always switched this feature off as soon as I got in the car, I didn't bother getting it rectified. I'm about to sell the car and will try and buy this part and do it myself before putting it on the market! How easy it it to get the wipers and the scuttle cover off?

Usually easy enough. Sometimes the wipers are hard to remove - if they are push and pull the wiper up and down against the fixing to break the seal caused by oxidation

Hi there, I have a 2011 mini one D, bought second hand and the automatic stop start hasn’t worked since I purchased. There’s no notification on the dash board to indicate an issue with the stop start. Is this an issue with the battery ? Is there anyway to check ? Thank you !

It is most likely the battery - the S/S will only work if the battery is compelely charged so will not work on older (but good) batteries if you only do short journeys. One simple way to check your battery is leave the ignition on without the engine running and see how long it stays on for. If the battery condition is on the poor side then the car's ECU will turn off the ignition after a short time and display a battery icon below the rev counter.

Hello, I am having a problem starting the 2008 Mini, I put the key in, then I press the brake and press the star button and it just makes a small clip. I already checked and the starter motor and battery are also there. Everything indicates that it is the Power Switch - Star-Stop Mini (61-35-9-299-332), but I don't know what to do to be sure that this is the problem. In the panel I don't get an A in a yellow circle, I only get an exclamation mark (!) in yellow. There was a week when it worked well and now I'm having the problem again, sometimes the key also gets stuck, but when it goes in it turns on everything on the dashboard, something normal. Can you guide me a little with this problem?

Hello. Can you explain how this function works. There is no fault code but I am pretty sure that it doesn't work. The on/off button is on. In what situations does the motor shuts itself off and when on again. And are there any terms off when it works or not? I had a fault code on the battery, changed it and thought it had something to do with this, but after putting in a new battery I still don't experienced a situation where the automatic start/stop worked. Like to hear, a fan from the Netherlands. Gr Erwin

The start stop system (in my opinion) is a gimmick designed to make the car's CO2 lower on the spec sheet but does nothing in the real world... Rather like the Prius and cars like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - apparently it does 152 miles per gallon - but hang on it's a 2 tonne 2 litre petrol Auto its just that the manufactures know what tests the cars go under and design for this rather than the real world (so the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV can do almost all of the Euro emission / ecconomy test on a fully charged battery skewing the results - and it's the same with Start Stop ANYWAY to answer your question...... The S/S system works ONLY when multiple conditions are met - I can't say I know all of them but they include - (1) car stationary, running and in neutral with your foot OFF the clutch. (2) very high battery charge (3) low drain on the battery (4) low / zero call on the aircon (5) high vacuum level on the brake servo (6) other stuff..... So the car will only stop then engine if all the above are true. If not it will not. Sensors include - neutral gear sensor, brake vacuum sensor, clutch sensor, battery level as in % charged, battery discharge %, engine temp plus others I am sure. Bit of a rant but I hope this helps.

Thanks! Worked on a 2011 Mini Countryman. Wipers came off no bother. Bit fiddly to get the scuttle cover off - remove the 4 10mm nuts, remove the rubber seal along the front edge, then a few good tugs to pull out the clips (careful not to break the clips) and pull from the base of the windscreen

I have a Cooper S R56 2010 RHD and for the last week or so I have had this warning appear every time I drive "Automatic Start/Stop Failure". I never used the SS option since I have owned the car (2 years) so this warning ha come from no where. I have tried to press the SS on/off switch but nothing, fully charged my battery and still the warning persist. Any suggestions ? thanks
@TheMiniSpecialist
3 жыл бұрын
Firstly - the SS is on until you press that button to turn it off, so it is on by default. Secondly does it bother you? I mean apart from the alert. Thirdly there are quite a few 'interlocks' that need to be in place before the engine stops in the way that the SS makes it stop - battery condition is one, electrical load is another - but the only way to find out the cause here is with a diagnostic tool - if you are local give us a call and we can book you in. Otherwise maybe just live with it?

it probably is the battery but before changing I suggest you charge the battery overnight on a trickle charge and see if that makes a difference. It maybe that your battery is fine but you don't drive far enough to charge the battery to the point where the systems is happy.

When I first got my 2010 cooper D within a day the thing was lit up like a christmas tree with errors. I knew nothing about Minis at this point so I took it to the local garage. One of the warnings was the stop/start system. The garage told me they replaced a broken switch but they couldn't calibrate it to learn when it stopped or something. Is this true or a load of nonsense? They advised a mini specialist but given my shortish and generally traffic free journeys it didn't seem worth dealer repair money. I hate modern cars and electronics. Give me a Mk2 VW Scirocco any day and stuff that generally just bolts together and works again.
@TheMiniSpecialist

The start stop system doesn't need calibrating - and to be honest I think the start/stop system is a bit of a nonsense designed to get the CO2 down in the very unrealistic EURO ecconomy tests. It does nothing much in the real world except turn your aircon off whilst the engine is stopped. Don't sweat it.

Firstly is the symbol showing on the dash? If not and the start stop isn't working its likely to be the battery - the engine will only stop (when in neutral, clutch released) if a number of conditions are met - a significant one is the level of charge in the battery - which is why 'Start-Stop' batteries exisit - to provide the required high level of charge. If the symbol is showing on the dash it maybe the sensor on the gearbox.
