In this video I demonstrate the whole process of removing the rear part off the back of the alternator to gain access to the voltage regulator. This was done while the alternator remained in place.
The regulator is the part which houses the bushes/brushes and regulates the voltage output of the alternator. If your alternator is faulty i.e not charging the battery this is most likely the faulty component. These are relatively cheap as a replacement part compared to a complete unit.
An easy way to check your alternator is to run up your engine and check the voltage at the battery with a multimeter. When the engine is running the voltage at the battery should be approximately 13.5 - 14V
In terms of difficulty I would rate this 5 out of 10. 1 being dead easy. This is quite a fiddly job and although no special tools were used you will need a verity of screwdrivers, 8, 10, 13, 15mm socket and 5mm allen/hex key. Allow at least 1hour to complete this repair.
The replacement part I managed to pick up from amazon. You will need to do some research on what part you need. The part numbers tend to change/interchange a lot. I would recommend you check your make of alternator and part number before stripping it right down.
