A suggestion: have a second person turn the crankshaft bolt (19mm) while using the method shown in the video. This will allow the belt to more easily slip onto the alternator pulley.

Had to stop in to say thank you for the video. I've been replacing batteries once a year for a while now, so when the battery light came on I was dreading it. I am not a mechanical guy, and had all but decided to take my 2008 to the shop before I found this. Giving us the socket sizes made me feel confident I wasn't dismantling my car and I was getting the right bolts (like the tensioner). I did have to re-watch to realize the tension bolt pulled down, not up, so happy I didn't snap that off. It's was pretty tight spacing to get the belt off, but it went on much easier, and that bottom bolt was a booger with my big hands. Thanks again, I owe you a beer sir!

Good tutorial, Just did it by my self no problem. While putting the belt on I wrapped belt around the alternator and water pump, then while pulling on the tensioner I found it easiest to slip the belt on the a/c compressor pulley. Gave me room to pull with one hand and use my other hand to slip the belt on.

Just replace my 06's alternator with the help of this video. Bottom bolt wasn't bad for me at all though i have pretty skinny hands so maybe that's why. Fair warning to a new viewer, a cheater bar is indeed needed to pull that tensioner down. I ended up using a giant pipe wrench to add lenght to my socket wrench to act as a cheater bar but oh man than felt dangerous. Thankfully it didnt slip off and the job went without a hitch. Thank you for uploading this video. I'd gladly buy you a six pack if you were near.

I didnt know about that tensioner and how it works. Glad you posted about it. It made my job easier. My 06 has 73k and the alt went. It was making a weird noise when I started the car. I looked under the hood and tested the charging system, didnt look too good so I shut it off and then it was dead, no power or anything. My Walmart warranty battery (24) is over 3 years. So I cleaned the posts and tried again.. Nothing. Then as I was looking at the engine/batt/alt I saw some smoke coming from the + on the battery. I took off the neg and got a big spark. That tells me to check the alt. I took off the wires to the alt and no more spark at the battery. So I put a small charge on my battery, connected the neg and it started but was still weak starting and NOT charging due to the fact I removed the alt wires. There was also no more neg cable spark with the alt disconnected and it was NOT charging. I plugged the square connector on the alt and it was still not charging. I turned the car off and touched the red power wire for the alt and got a spark. That tells me the alt is shorted out. It should NOT spark like that at the alt with the car off. That also tells me the alt is bad because it is shorted out internally. So I bought a rebuilt one. I was done 4 hours later. If any other person who just drives and doesn't check out their car when it's making noises, as my car was doing, could have big problems. If I didnt check the noise as I was leaving the house, I would have shorted out my electrical system to a disastrous degree. The wires would have melted and cause big $$$$$$$ problems. My alt also smelled burnt as it was initially running. Now it charges at 13.58 volts. You video helped big time. Thanks.

Thanks for the video, I just replaced the Alternator on my 2010. That lower bolt underneath is major trouble spot. If my hands were any bigger I would't have been able to get that bolt out, still took me a good 15 minutes to get it out. My only critique would be to inform everyone about resetting the automatic windows in the car after you hook the battery back up. Thanks
Great vid. Just have to be careful not to round out that tension bolt. idk if it's a scion thing or your quality of tools but the bigger the socket wrench the better IMO. The instructions from RockAuto mentioned to loosen the bolts on the Alt first then go after the tension bolt before & after the part is hung so you have some more play in the S-belt. Also, the deeper the 12mm on that bottom bolt the better ; ) that bolt is a MFer. Pehaps a video of how to test the battery/alternator can be linked to this as well. Never-the-less great DIY vid Chris!!

The alternator was right in front of it and of course it just has to angle upwards so you can't fit a ratchet on it. Found your video and it made everything 10x easier. This has been a common problem for people, I am going to do a separate video on this issue haven't had time to do it yet . Anyway I had a difficult time putting the belt back on myself get help have someone pull back on the tensioner while you concentrate on putting the belt back on using a screw driver being careful to not punch a hole in your belt you will have to pry the belt over the ridge on the pulley. Some people take off the passenger front tire and take off the access panel because the pulley on the water pump has no ridge. I found it a faster job the way I did it even tho its difficult to get the belt back on.

Zerxy xion One possible thing , when you disconnect the battery it clears the pcm's memory and it needs to reset its self , if it will let it idle and make sure the belt is on all the pulleys properly.
