Most DYIs will save you hundreds, if not thousands. I saved $2000 replacing my own fuel pump. Took a few hours, but it was well worth it for a $150 part.

I have a an important tip for anyone installing aftermarket lower ball joints... I bought the most premium aftermarket lower ball joints available (Sankei 555) and the bolts supplied with mine were to short for one of the holes, literally engages like 2 threads, would have stripped the knuckle out if I hadn't noticed and switched back to the longer oem bolts. So watch out for this with your set!

Always wear eye protection. Unless you're making an instructional video. btw - ear protection would help too when you're using a BFH in a closed space with corrugated metal walls. All joking aside, thanks for the video. Very helpful.

Why would you retorque the 4 bolts after a hundred miles that have red threadlock on them? Doesn't that just break the threadlock loose?

Nice video. 2003 Tacoma FSM says 59 ft-lbf for the 4 bolts connecting to the knuckle (not the 30-something in the video).

Cody, the torque on those 4 bolts isn’t 37 it’s 59 foot pounds. Maybe that’s why you’ve had them come loose... This is per the factory service manual for a 2000 4wd and pre runner.

There is mixed publications about this. Per the service manual, it is 37ft/lbs if you have the ball joint rubber protectors and 59ft/lbs if you don't. He has the rubber protectors. For the 2001-2004 Tacomas, they use a different bolt than the prior years. The prior years used a bolt with a flange while later years used a bolt and washer(what you see here) that commands 37 ft/lbs. www.mighty90s.com/forums/discussion/89/the-different-lbj-bolts-and-why-its-important-prado-90-series The weird thing in this video is that he takes out the bolts that required 37ft/lbs but reinstalled new bolts that are the 59ft/lb type but torqued it to only 37ft/lb.

I would recommend against hitting parts that you are keeping.. if you are replacing the ball joint then its ok to go ahead and hit the bolt end sticking out. If for some reason you want to keep the part and reuse it then put the castle nut back on the threads and tighten till the top of the nut aligns with the top of the bolt.. this will protect the threads so that the part can be reused.

the only difference the way I did was lift it at the rotor with a jack, where the studs are instead of on the dust shield plate. that way it doesnt get bent.

If you only replacing the lower ball joint, the alignment will be very close. Certainly close enough to drive 7 miles to the Alignment shop. However, if you are replacing the outer tie rod end at the same time, toe could be greatly affected. Our suggestion would be to adjust the tie rod (which of course adjust the toe) as close as you can to where it was before the repair and get it to the Alignment shop with as little driving as possible. Yes, agreed. Especially if you are definitely going to REPLACE the ball and socket type joint be it a tie rod end or ball joint. However, if you plan to reuse the part it is a little risky to pound on the nut and stud as you suggested. If you damage the threads on the stud or nut it can be very difficult to put the nut back on the stud during reassembly. Sometime the stud will turn with the nut never tightening. So, we here at Low Range usually just jar the stud loose by pounding on them. Your point is well taken however. Thanks for watching and commenting.

That's a taper fit, Taper fits are precise and super strong, hitting the side slightly deforms the taper for a split second.. It really does work.. I'm a Machinist, lots of things in Machine shop use taper fits, cuz they are the strongest... I've beat the shit out of many things... LOL Both ways work, but knocking the taper fit, usually takes less effort. especially for the stubborn ones. if you can get access to it..

I've had good luck with MOOG and Rock Auto for Tacoma parts. I'd suggest getting the higher tier stuff, not economy MOOG parts. For instance, for an 03 Tacoma I'd recommend K90255 and K90259, which Rock Auto carries. You can always find a 5% off code for them as well. Shipping can be a lot sometimes, but usually its reasonable. Hope this helps.

( Scratching my Head ).. I own two Toyota Tacoma's . A 1998 and 1996... And "Three Times", my Ball-Joint's have snapped off, while Driving !!!. On the 98, the left front ball-joint broke off. Then a year later the Right side Broke !.. Then i bought the 1996 and a month later the driver side Ball-joint snapped .. ( WTH ).. I'm starting to get Paranoid when driving my Trucks...lol

I had to compress my coil springs with a clamp in order to put the four bolts back in. when I jacked my control arm to get that four bolt flange closer to the steering arm, the entire truck was lifting up. Im guessing it's because my truck has a 3" lift with stiffer suspension. It made this process alot harder though.

+lowrangeoffroad I actually went down to the hardware store also and grabbed some of the same bolts just longer to grab onto that steering arm and pull it down by tightening with a wrench. Then 1 by 1 I replaced the longer bolts with the original short ones.

Really shouldn't ever hit the end of a bolt with a hammer like that, unless the hits are really light. Otherwise that whole thing is going to have to be replaced when you can't get the nut back on because you've flattened the end.
