VERY IMPORTANT BOYS AND GIRLS !!!! YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE CAP FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER (BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR) BEFORE COMPRESSING THE PISTON IN THE CALIPER. OTHERWISE YOU COULD CAUSE A LEAK IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM BY FORCING IT. Dude you really should of mentioned this, some people out there don't have common sense...smh

My husband said I should put brake grease on the ends of my brake pads where they sit inside of the slide guides. This is do to the fact that they are moving parts and will help them from binding as they slide. Is this true? If so why wasn't this mentioned in your video. Thank you for this information. This was a very informative video for a girl like me to understand.

Thanks Tony. I been doing this for years. There is something that I saw you do that I will start doing. Using the old brake pad with the c clamp to push the caliper back in. I bought lifetime brakes at Auto Zone. I kept the old pads that I took off the car and use those as a "core" when it's time to replace the brakes on my car again. That way I can drive the car to Auto Zone and get my "lifetime replacement " and replace them when I am ready. But if you can change oil you can do this easy easy.

Thanks for the video TDT! I'm going to help my son replace his pads (he has the exact same vehicle, it's even black!), and I was wondering why you didn't mention the necessity of taking the cover off the master cylinder before compressing the piston. Is there something special about Honda brake systems that negates the need to do this? My apologies if another viewer has already mentioned this.

No need for antisieze? Cuz 2 years down the road when we go to do this job again we can break the bolts and replace them rather than easily turn them off. Oh and it might be a good idea to pop the cap off the reservoir so that you don't bust a brake line or damage the brake system. But Mr backyard mechanic you know everything correct?

parking brake should be put on? or wheels chalked off? extra jack stand in case the pump slips off or fails. when spraying brake cleaner be sure not to get it on paint! for SAFETY SAKE! A tip for the grease. sometimes the "dogs" as you call them can make a squeaking noise as well. A tip for the bolt. that mounts to the rubber gasket sometimes petroleum based lubricants can speed up the break down process of the rubber. recommended lube silicone paste. thanks! Tony, should the upper caliper bolt be greased also? I find the brake pads corrode at the stationary part of the brake housing. I usually wire brush the ends where the pads slip in and grease them with the high temp brake grease.

@keithweiser7521

Kishan Patel If there is dirt or corrosion on the outside of the exposed part of the piston, this can make it hard to push back in. Try cleaning the outside of the piston with brake cleaner (acetone). It takes quite a bit of force, so make sure to use a c-clamp. Something like a quick clamp might not be enough force.
@HonestOK2930
10 жыл бұрын
Turned out it was the screw kind.
@MistySandy
10 жыл бұрын
Kishan Patel If the piston won't compress, there may be corrosion (rust) in the piston causing it to jam or retract hard. This will also may cause excessive wear on the pad and heating of the rotor because the cylinder cannot retract when you take your foot off the brakes. Also, my 98 Accord is a sedan and the piston is not hollow , rather it has a cross hatch on it. (might only be on the back brake pistons due to the emergency (cable) brake. You need to turn those in. If you cannot get the piston to retract with a clamp, you should consider replacing the whole caliper with a rebuilt one for about $100 (I just replace my right rear caliper and pad holding bracket on the rear for ~ $75). It a all the pins and boots, and sliding wear parts are included as well. Take the old parts in as there is a core charge if you do not exchange the parts. Good luck. Local library is also a great place to get instructions for a brake job on a specific car. Take some Dimes to make copies. i.e. Chiltons or Mitchell repair books.
