Great video. If the governor is broken inside the engine, would the engine always rev high? I have a craftsman chipper that runs OK at low speed, but revs way too high at high speed. Thanks for any help before I sink time and money into this.

Thanks! Not always, but usually it will do that. I would try to adjust the governor first, i have videos on how to do it, if that doesn't work then you may need to replace the internal part. Thanks for Watching!!!

If the new carb is set to lean it will cause that, does it have a mixture screw, does it stop when you put a half choke on it? if it does its carb related, if not it could be internal problems with the governor. Thanks for Watching!!!

I have Stiga lawn tractor with this assembly on a 344cc B&S. Due to some european regulations, the rpm is set to 2800 and the power to like 9 hp, while it should be around 13 hp at much higher rpms. Is it likely that they have use another governor spring? What do you think ?

I finally got around to rebuilding a briggs 13.5 hp. When I started it up it was running full throttle. Now I'm wondering if the little tab is misaligned from the shaft on the end of the governor inside the engine? It did have nice tension when I put the sump cover back on. I guess the ? Is can it be repositioned without taking the engine apart? Would doing an adjustment position it again? This is the first time doing a rebuild. I watched a few of your videos and was very helpful in putting the engine back together after a year of just letting it sit apart. I just hope I don't have to take it all apart because I'm old and can't use my left hand to good after cutting my thumb in half.

I just got a briggs 8hp on a 8-32 workhorse mower. The issue is that it locked up and if I try to spin the flywheel by hand or rope...the linkage to the throttle moves front to back and only lets the engine rotate a very small amount. Is something broken internally or is the governor bolt messed up?
@fnaguitarplayer9

It sounds like something may be broke inside, if it was ran low on oil it may have thrown the rod, sometimes it can be repaired depending on if it just broke the rod and didn't destroy other parts when it happened, i'd suggest removing the sump and taking a look to see. thanks for watching!!!

Hey Frank, I love your videos, they are very informative! I was wondering if you've got any idea on how to fix an issue with a B&S lawnmower engine I've got. It's an 31P677 (Vertical model) from 2013. The engine runs fine when I start it (the oil consumption has been fairly high though lately, I've burned more than 1L this season alone), but after about 15 minutes of running it starts to run very rough. The RPMs drop, it starts to backfire (at least I think it does, it makes loud banging noises), and it starts to throw out a lot of smoke. I just turn it off when this happens, and let it sit for a bit. It runs fine again afterwards, at least for a while. I already changed the oil, but to no avail. I didn't overfill it or use the wrong grade of oil (I used synthetic 5W30). I would have no problem tearing the engine down to fix it, but at this point I've got no idea what the problem is, could you point me in the right direction?

Appreciate that! the smoke after 15 minutes, is it black or blue, if its black i'd say your float may be sticking in the carburetor. I would also check the valve clearances, if its set to tight it could be opening the valves slightly when its hot do to the metal expanding, it is possible. But I'm guessing its more of a carburetor issue. using that much oil i'd say it needs new rings, if you tear it down you should change the valve seal on the intake valve, that causes them to burn oil as well. Thanks for Watching!!!

It turned out the head gasket was broken in between the cylinder and the part next to it where the push rods go, so the engine was losing compression by leaking into the crankcase. 15 dollars and an hour later she ran like a beauty again! Thanks for the tips though :)

ohhh. Those are bad about that. The briggs in my next video that happened to it plus a BUNCH of other stuff! I didn't think of that because they usually won't run at all when they do that. Your welcome, glad you got her going again!
