I ended up having to use a Dremel on speed 6 and spent 2 cut-off wheels cutting the collar (or nut) off. It went quick, couple minutes. The cut did go a little too deep and breached the lower strainer but got through the collar (nut) with out touching the sink. The collar (nut) snapped right off and the flange had corroded away ( after only 3yrs of use) and disintegrated as I peeled it away from the drain. Replaced all parts and drain with new as shown in this video. Pro-tip: I used mold-mildew resistant clear silicone in place of putty. Over the years I noticed the putty washing away. I put a thin bead around the parameter of the drain flange. I chose silicone over caulk because I need a seal not a 'glue' or 'bond'. Also being silicone, future removal shouldn't be a p.i.t.a. had I used caulk.

I know a lot of plumbers have switched to putting silicone instead of putty in this situation for the same reason. Glad you got it taken care of. DreMel for the win.

Great video. Lots of good tips. Do you have any suggestions on how to remove the drain when the cross pieces in the drain have corroded away. How do I stop the drain from spinning when trying to unloosen it?

Mini hack saw. Cut into the nut on the bottom then pry it apart. Here is a link. kzitem.info/news/bejne/u3eI0IWYk6mJoYo

replace the strainer with the kind he's removing. It's a better design than the new one he's putting in. Could have also just cleaned and installed, the old one looks fine.
@ThatFixItGuy

You could have reinstalled the old one except this one would not seal good and the cheap metal on the bottom kept bending.

So you tighten the nut real tight? The last reseal job I did only lasted 4 months.
@ThatFixItGuy

Sometimes with this it is best to tighten and let it sit for awhile and tighten again. Is the seal from the plumbers putty what’s going bad?
@troyberecz707
2 жыл бұрын
@@ThatFixItGuy I think it is the expansion/contraction, and not tightening the nut enough. At first the rubber seal bunched up, so I had to loosen, and didn't tighten as well as I should have. It was a confidence issue. It had been a while since I had done a repair. So on this repair I very slowly tightened up the nut, waited and retightened.
@ThatFixItGuy

Yeah right on. With basket strainers you have to do that some times. Less in warmer environments, but nevertheless it usually has to be tightened a couple of times.

I've did my best to find a video where where you use silicone when installing kitchen sink strainer by someone who knows what they are doin can't find one. Is it that by design, is there a reason why not to use silicone? If so please explain , if not could you please do one? Lol

I put some Mega Lock Thread Sealant link: amzn.to/3bwsRVK all over that nut at the 7:45 mark. You can use and type of pipe dope (Liquid thread sealant) . I just happen to like this one best. That will help with that drip.

These installs are the most mistaken ive ever seen. The rubber gasket ideally goes between the sink and the strainer, but most cheap sinks are not recessed enough to perfectly allow this, which forces a putty job. There is no function to installing rubber seal below sink. Blows my mind how so many people cant understand how a caulk-less drain works. 😢

Also, if the metal nut stuck; then, I would use BBQ Utility or Multi-Purpose Lighter to warm up and expand the metal nut for 30+ seconds, then will be easier to untie !

When should you replace the basket or just the putty? Mine is leaking a bit but i replaced them about 5 years ago.Should i just replace the putty or just start over with a new basket?
@ThatFixItGuy

If the basket and the gasket still look good I would use them again. If putty is not working do to movement in your sink you could silicone the basket in as well. It does not crack or get get hard like putty over time.

May problem is when I get to the part to putting the pipe nut on under the basket and tighten that it turns the whole basket and it gets loosened so did I not get the basket tight enough?
@ThatFixItGuy

Yep sounds like the basket strainer is not tight enough. That nut just has to be snug tight most of the time. I use megalock on the seal cause sometimes it wants to leak. Basket strainers can be a bear! You can do this! If you like send me a picture of the basket strainer.

Yes I do you megaloc on the plastic washer to stop leakage. I just coat the whole plastic washer a little bit and you will be good to go.
