Nice and detailed video. I watched Top Hydraulics videos and their process seemed simpler then yours. But then again they did not show the detail that you did and I appreciate that. Luckily my top doesn't leak yet but I guess some day I get to look forward to this repair. Thanks again for taking your time to show how this is completely done.

Not sure if this is happening to me, I noticed today that the material of the roof is starting to wrinkle so maybe some fluid has gotten out. Will have to see this weekend.

Fluid leaking from the top lock cylinder will eventually soak into the top panel's headliner and make it wrinkle. That's a shame becasue the replacement headliners are hard to come by.

Hello Paul, thanks for asking. You will have to unlatch and move the top manually, which is easy to do: First, locate the pump n the trunk's right rear corner. The pump has a pressure relief valve on it's left side. It looks like a brass colored Allen bolt (5-mm inside hex). Open the valve about one turn counter-clockwise. Next, locate a small steel cable behind the pump. Pull this cable to unlatch the right forward corner of the trunk lid. Next, locate the matching cable on the left side. You can reach it through an access panel. Pull it to unlock the forward left corner of the trunk. Now you can manually flip the trunk lid backwards. (By the way, you could even open the trunk lid the regular way while it's flipped backwards - looks really odd, and is kinda scary the first time...) Lastly, you unlatch the front with a 6-mm Allen wrench. There is a plug in the headliner behind the rearview mirror. Take out the plug, and stick in the 6-mm Allen wrench. Unlock the front, and you can now move the top manually. After the top has been pulled back a foot or two, you will find the small screws exposed which secure the headliner, for access to the top lock cylinder A170 800 00 72.

Thank you for the detailed video. My hydraulic fluid is low. Is there a video for simply adding hydraulic fluid to the pump. The hydraulic fluid on my pump is low and I want to add more hydraulic fluid but the Allen wrench bolt is extremely hard to loosen and get off as it is in there for 24 years now. The car is 1998 MB SLK 230. Is there a proper video for adding hydraulic fluid for the roof pump in the trunk? Thank you.

The Allen bolt on top of the pump can be very tight, but you have to use it. Use a tight fitting wrench and apply enough torque. Here is the video where we are showing the fill process: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uZlmz4N_f3R4YGk If the Allen bolt on top of the pump has not been used in 24 years, then you must still have all original cylinders in the car's top. You are lucky that they lasted this long and you will now find them all failing in short order.

Do the cylinders in the rear have to be replaced, or is it just best to do all 3 if the cylinder on the top is the only one leaking?

That switch has to come out and I would agree that it is the trickiest part of replacing the whole set of cylinders. Give it a few more tries. If the switch breaks, then you can epoxy it back together. We have had many thousands of customers successfully completing the task and I know you can do it, too!

@TopHydraulics
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. Here are our R171 videos: kzitem.info/door/PLly4CMbpk7ozp1wiLNavyy_fW4QCYtYJc The front lock cylinder R&R is quite similar. Teh main lifts differ a little becasue the pump is in a different location and the trunk lid cylinders are easier to remove on an R171.

Hi there, I've got a problem with my `95 A124 Mercedes, after replacing seals in the cylinders of the main hood lifters, the roof does not open. I had to let it replace, coz the left one was leaking badly (my mechanic replaced both sides just to be sure). The one that (un)locks the roof was replaced last year (received new seals too). Hydraulic fluid was topped up to maximum level (original one from MB). Now when I try to open the roof, the rear lock opens but the roof part where the glass window is lifts very very slow, and if finally rises so the front part can rise nothing happens. The button to open the roof blinks (I think even right from the moment on i pull it to open). Did you have such situation, do you know what the reason might be? Te engine runs when I operate the roof and I'm in P mode of course.
@TopHydraulics

Hello Bartosz, the A124 E-Class hydraulic system is quite different from the R170 SLK. If the rear glass is lifting slowly, then you either have the pump not putting out enough power, or there is an internal bypass in the system that is robbing power from the pump. Internal bypasses are very common on DIY repair attempts (where someone sells you a bag of seals and claims that's all you need to fix your cylinder - there is no such thing as proper DIY cylinder rebuild). You can check for internal bypasses by making the pump motor run without any cylinders moving, and checking whether there is any return flow into the reservoir (through the top hose) at that point. You should contact us directly for more detailed instructions, or have your mechanic contact us. We are happy to help.

I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly. Of course these cylinders can be repaired - that's why the video is showing how Top Hydraulics' cylinders were installed. If you want to get your cylinder repaired, then send it to Top Hydraulics and it will be repaired (and made better than new inside) for about 1/6 of what you would pay for a new one.
