THANK YOU! What an insane mechanism! I feel sorry for anyone trying to do this under less-than-ideal conditions on the side of the road. I searched numerous videos, none of them showed the process in the mechanism is clearly as you did. Once again, 1A Auto come through again!

-- Late to the party but I just did it on my 2004. Great clean, vehicle, everything works, but the lady that owned it said that spare had never come off the vehicle. Boy that was a SOB. Standard issue, the secondary safety. 4'' clearance between the tire, managed over an hour to fit a torque wrench in there in and work that 15mm out. It was so bad to begin with, it broke free with a 16mm. Then just beating on that rock. Bolt was pretty damn tight. Then I just kept jacking the spare from center to forward side of the vehicle until it came off that lip the upper assembly hangs on with. For those of you trying this with the tire on, this video is great instruction. With the tire on, follow the steps, but it's a brute force job. You get that 15bolt out, that's half the battle. Liquid wrench, I'd give it 5 quarter turns, douse it, step away for 10 minutes. 5 more quarter turns, douse, step away. Rinse and repeat until the sob comes off. Did it without a lift. Drop the tire as far as it will go, and jack up the tire facing the front of the vehicle. That'll give you some space to work. I worked from the exhaust/passenger side. Not sure if that's better or worse.

With a flat tire or two flat tires or in a awkward place you would literally have to jack the rear end for clearance...great demonstration..got me thinking worse case scenario. Thanks !

Would you recommend coating cable in anti-seize or a dry lube to help avoid cable on new replacement winch for a rural setting where vehicles are constantly on gravel/dirt? My factory winch I didn’t have problems with the hook it was the cable only dropped a foot and then some internally seized up..

Tyler Beevers - i agree. I’m a GM guy, but this is an incredibly shitty design by them. This is what you get when designers/engineers sit in an office, and real-world people are out on the road. Thanks A1.

Same exact thing happened to me last summer after needing the spare. Very first truck, 2008 GMC Sierra 1500, really like the older 88-98 GM pickups, wanted one, thought the older ones were much better designed and better quality materials. Also like the older Ford's for that matter. Now mine's in the bed and I want to order this upgraded cable only, which apparently is what all manufacturers used to do and are returning to. I don't think Dodge, Ford or Toyota ever did a secondary lock either, and I've never seen a spare come off on it's own? Either way, next truck will be either older or I'll really be critiquing every single aspect of design so I don't get an idiotic machine that I cannot use when I get into trouble and need the use of critical emergency equipment.

haha, i just had to use a 4 inch angle grinder with a cut-off wheel to whack the bottom cable off, then tire dropped down big time. try doing this on the side of the highway miles from home ??!. my hoist would not lower the tire, so i had to cut it off. if i was on the side of the highway miles from home ?, i would have been screwed big time !. the engineers needs an ass whooping for this set up !.

In a emergency, you can buy a cheap 24" long 3/8" drive extension from Harbor Freight and use a 12 point 1/2" socket on the end of the extension to slip over the square drive bolt head on the spare tire hoist. But be aware the 12 point socket will probably jam on the square bolt head of the hoist. The hoist bolt head is 0.460" square, just under 15/32". I tried using the female end of a long 1/2" drive extension but the O.D. is too large for the tube going to the spare tire hoist.

These are usually so corroded that no amount of fooling around with the release will be of any use. It's much easier to simply cut the cable. That releases the spare. You can then replace the hoist, which needed to be done anyway

The old one is built like a tank, but the new one looks like almost every other plastic piece of junk they sell these days. Why didn't you just AirKroil or PB Blaster that secondary latch and get it back to good?
