Yes, too many PRO mechanics call that R134a refrigerant "Freon" but just 'cuz they do, does not mean it's right. This is a good video on the procedure to replace the compressor! Thanks!

Why would it be difficult for, it looks very easy to due, damn its easier than changing my oil on my SUV, but I replaced an engine from the ground, just used jack stands and a jack with Bundy cords to hold ac unit out of way, it was the easiest engine I ever done and didn't use any lifts, no friends work in garages anymore, so no use of a lift after hour's for free. It's easy if your smart. No creeper neither, just cardboard with old shirt on that slides well. Happy working hard if this is hard, hate to see a Frame swap done on a 1980 chevy pickup, no lift, 3 friends to lift cab off frame and walk off, 14 bolts holds the nose on and easy to take off to change engine, its stupid hard to get engine up and over radiator support now. 20 minutes and 2 people, the nose walks off. Then your great to go as 1.

Questions: 1. What remaining parts I don't change (hoses/pipes) do I need to air flush repainting pipes before connecting hi/lo to new compressor (of contaminants)? 2. Once everything assembled, can I for a very short time (minutes) test run the compressor to make sure in goes on (prior to vacumming/recharging w/ refrig.)? I plan to have local shop recharge. To check a static charge of refrigerant you only need one guage line on low side preferred also this is a typical AC compressor CLUTCH failure very common on Honda and does not require the removal of the refrigerant nor the Entire Compressor to repair but most shops dont want to do this because the lose labor and parts money. Also you can purchase the clutch alone for a fraction of the cost of the entire Compressor

Good video. My situation is just a little different. (2009 Honda CRV AWD) My AC is running even if the AC control on the dash is off, note I/m not refering to the defrost setting. I pulled the relay and it shuts off but when I plug it in the AC clutch engages. I also have removed the wiring harness at the interior control and I still have the clutch running. It eventually kicks off after what I think is the hi or low preesure switch kicks in and then stays off until the pressure stabilizes. I think it might be a faulty clutch that is grounding out and causing the issue but not sure of any tricks to test for this. Note, this started on this past Sunday and on Saturday I had to drive for several hours in a major rain storm. Any thoughts?

Many thanks, an exceptionally good explanation & video. I read somewhere that the system should be flushed after purging to prevent potentially damaging debris from the failed failed compressor contaminating the new compressor. You make no reference to this, what are your thoughts?
@MagniKhan
6 жыл бұрын
If the clutch is the only problem (the internal workings of the compressor were not the issue causing failure) then there is most likely no need to purge the system. If the compressor itself and not the clutch went bad, then a purge is necessary. The condenser would also need to be replaced as it would be the first place the debris would go and it's channels are usually just to small to completely clean. And they are cheap, especially compared to replacing another compressor.

Hi Jim. I replaced the compressor myself. I didn't vacuum before I removed it tho. When i installed new one the compressor n clutch did turned on but there was no cold air coming from vents only warm. I drove for 2 days but I was not turning on the ac. When I got my vacuum pump I vacuumed the system 2 times and then i tried to charge with refrigerant but it seems that it wont take it. Now my problem is that the clutch doesn't engage and so I can turn on the ac but there is warm air coming from the vents only and my lines pressure both are around 80-86 psi. What could be the problem?

Just a point of technicality. When Jimmy says there is power at the clutch connector and because there is power present the compressor is bad. What he really should say is the clutch is bad. The compressor maybe fine it's just the clutch that is faulty. However the reason he says this is because these days you sometimes cannot get a clutch assembly by it;s self and just swap it out. You have to get an entire new compressor. And also Jimmy being a shop if he just changed out the clutch and the compressor failed in a year and he offers a 2 year warranty hows he going to explain that to the customer. So it's a better angle for him to replace the clutch and compressor even though technically there may not be anything wrong with the compressor.
