You need the lss duct extension mod. It’ll push the fan back about 2 inches, plus add a grate to better help protect the flap. It’s pricey but worth it for the average home-smoker. You might like it in order to add longevity to the flap without needing to do as much maintenance.

Thanks for the video! I used a silicone baking mat cut to 4-3/4 x 3-3/4 $8 at Walmart. I got 9 flaps from 1 sheet. 2 spatchcock chickens, 1 venison shoulder and Memorial day saved!

Wow dude, this "IS" the Grill that I really wanna get,,,,,, but at Lowe's, they don't give an EXTENDED warrantee.... / other BBQ shows show that there is an EXTENDED out fan spacer, so it won't do this, for me I'm waiting for a "slightly" renewed Gravity 980! Too much $ to spend for just the "1 yr. Warrantee"... if it breaks, it's garbage........I don't want to waste "that much" $$!

I’ve replaced my fan flap a few times. I put 2 flaps together to add a little more structure to the flap and hopefully it will be more durable. I noticed it’s about 5 degrees off sometimes since doing this. I might order the LSS mode that extends the distance from the ash bin to the flap.

That’s interesting, and yeah the lss mod is probably the best for preventing any future distortions. Thanks for watchin

I burned 3 fan flaps within a month in a half. The LSS mod is 100% worth it. I haven't had a single issue since.

My burned. Do you think that’s the reason why my temperature are not accurate?

I've seen some people replacing the flap with a heavier duty oven silicon mat, which they claim doesn't suffer the damaged flap problem. Have you seen or heard about this? Warranty is good and all, but so is a fix and forget solution if it exists.

Lol...I've had my 980 since May of last year. I had to change the flap last weekend. It was a simple and easy job. BTW, the replacement flap is thicker and made of silicone...should last much longer.

How many cook does it take for the flap on a char grill 980 to go bad

I have no idea about the number. I suspect that I ruined mine by putting too much wood in the ash tray. Not gonna do that anymore.

It's not about longevity. It's about too much wood or too windy. Don't use big chunks and keep your wood oriented to the left side of the ash can
