Hey Jim, I'm with you on save the frustration. Working on an old project 056AV for my brother now. I've got a stihl gasket coming. Do you know if that goes on dry or takes a sealant? If so, what do you recommend?

If your referring to the base gasket, I’d go over the mating surfaces of the crankcase and the cylinder lightly with 320 grit Emory cloth and clean off any debris, then put the base gasket on dry. They seal up good from my experience. I sand in a pattern around the surface, so I don’t have lines going across the deck which could allow air passage across (hope that wording makes sense)😉👍

I’m in the shop working on a 390XP, just did that and put the cylinder back on, but I’ll take a couple minutes and do a demo video of what I’m talking about

@jimssawsnstuff8903 makes perfect sense, I'm a paint and body guy so deck sanding and not leaving scratches for leaks isn't an issue. I was referring to the fuel tank. I split the original to dig out the dissolved old fuel line. Tank is metal, had a paper type gasket with what appeared to be a light sealant on each side but the whole thing was pretty thin and hard. Wasn't sure if the new gasket needed an adhesive for fuel tank. Thanks for your replies, Merry Christmas boss 👍

@@jaysonmartin1448 ah, fair enough…I’m just going from memory, but I believe I did the same kind of thing, cleaned it up with 320, applied a decent layer of Threebond 1194 to both surfaces and let them get tacky before “sticking” it back together…good luck! 😉👍 Merry Christmas, thanks for tuning in.

I'm working on a 056 now. What about the vent? It was a very used saw and the vent was loose in the tank. Wish you would show how you do things instead of what you did. Lol

I wish people would subscribe when they want me to run around doing stuff for them. As far as the tank goes, are you referring to fuel tank or oil tank…vent or pickup line and filter?

Lol subsribed, I just forget to like and subscribe. I was talking about the gas tank vent. Already got parts ordered for gas line and impulse line, the boot looks good so not going to replace that. Have a carburetor rebuild kit ordered also. Haven't checked spark yet, will do it today, just didn't think about it. Ordered a gas tank gasket though.

@@travelswithbenny3328 Thanks man! 😉👍 That’s the first 056 I’ve gone into that deep, I’d say they aren’t the most user friendly to work on. To access the tank vent I recall it was buried under the top cover and the tank. I think I had to remove the muffler, handlebar, air filter, carb and the top cover. I believe there was enough room to get the vent in without pulling the cylinder, but I did replace the fuel lines and a lot of other stuff, so I was taking it apart anyhow. All I can recommend is take lots of pics so you can refer to them for reassembly…like the carburetor linkages etc. Good luck, thanks for tuning in. I’m going to be finished the tree work at the end of November and in the shop again after that for most of the winter working on a variety of saws, so hopefully I’ll have a few more videos that you find interesting…when I’m working on a particular model, I really am happy to be interactive with questions and follow up videos on specific things, so feel free to ask. Jim

I've pulled all the covers and shrouds off. Removed the gas tank and split it. Waiting on parts right now. I'm not a natural mechanic lol, I spend more time thinking about it than it takes me to work on it!. Yeah....about those pictures.....ummmm shoulda, didn't lol. Thanks for getting back! I cut a lot (for me anyway) I heat with wood and try to stay 2 yrs ahead. This year it'll be about 10 cords (30 ricks around here). I help the neighbors out alot. I've got about 15 saws to work on over the winter, stihl and husky and few oddball ones. A 576 is next after the 056, then 2 365 a 61 followed by some stihls. I use a ported 064, ms170, 009, 455 rancher and a 281 mostly. My 880 magnum and 064 get used for slabbing mostly.

@@travelswithbenny3328 that’s a good assortment of saws man! The 064 should be sweet. I’ve rebuilt a bunch of Husky auto-tunes (which I believe the 576 is there too). Hope the 056 goes good from here on out.
