This was done correctly, the seal around the thermostat is the seal, no other gasket needed. Use factory thermostats with the giggle valve placed at 12 o'clock, to prevent blown out radiators by overheating. Expensive thru Toyota, but they last and cheaper in the long run.

Also for older gen 3 thermos too (91-95. 91-94 = gen 3, 95-96 = gen 3.5, 97-01 = gen 4). Use Stant 82 celcius thermo w/ jiggle valve. Buy a new rubber gasket and that goes around the thermo to seal. No other paste or gasket needed. The jiggle valve (small bypass) must be aligned with the protrusion bump on the inlet pipe. the long part (spring assy) of thermo goes in the waterpump side. torque 2 bolts to 78 in lbs. this is all per Toyota manual.

oil & water in the radiator means you probably have a blown head-gasket. Easier, cheaper to just buy another low mileage used engine rather than fix that one,, just my opinion.

However t relacement thermostat I was given did not have that "float"(?) piece that you said ought to go on top of t thermostat. Is that ok? Was I given t wrong thermostat? Or do I need to have t Water pump changed like I think?

@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor - Mr. Finn. My apologies for stating that the thermostat is in a different location than you mentioned. I was misled by a crook mechanic who pointed to a location and asked $120 to replace. After seeing your video i looked into my car and noted it was exactly as it looked in your video like on a plastic tube connecting to the return hose from bottom of radiator. I went to Advance Auto bot a new thermostat and a washer for about $15.00 and inspired by your video finished the job this evening after work. Took me 30 minutes to change and glad that i came to your site and learned how to do it. Thank you Sir. God Bless your golden heart!

@@dcwatashi Its very easy man if it is a 2000 Camry. Very easy to get to and you can do it for the cost of a thermostat. In a 2000 Camry 4 cyl Engine it is on the left side of the engine, that connects to a water hose from the radiator to the engine block. There is a plastic adaptor mounted to the block on 2 bolts that attaches to the hose.

@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor is there a shield that needs to be removed from bottom of car or can I access radiator screw plug from above the hood cuz I don't have a jack.
@Marcoosianism
3 жыл бұрын
@@mattm209 Should be a hole (aligned below the radiator drain) in the (plastic) shield/guard screwed to the underside of the car but sometimes the hole is not perfectly aligned with the "drain" of the radiator. I removed part of the shield enough to be able to twist on a drain tube to the raidator drain protrusion so the coolant will flow through the tube into the pan where I wanted it. Otherwise, take your chance with the alignment of the drain hole or just remove the entire plastic shield protector (several bolts). You can, however, stick your hand down behind to radiator to access the knob that opens the radiator drain. If you have the shield off then you can obviously also access it now from the bottom.

@@Marcoosianism so does this mean that the coolant needs to be drained? I’m hoping my neighbor can fix this for me tomorrow but I want to have everything ready I think I have enough coolant
@Marcoosianism
2 жыл бұрын
@@dcwatashi Hey. Sorry for the delay. I can't be 100% sure but when you remove the thermostat housing - the metal part attached to the upper radiator tube that seals in the top part of the thermostat which is attached with two bolts - if there is still coolant in the system it may start pouring out from there. I don't know how much coolant is stored in that top area. To avoid a huge mess it's probably a good idea to drain a lot of it out the bottom first. If you're not doing a complete flush, I don't think there's any harm in using that drain-off to refill your system once your new thermostat is in place, even though it's probably a good idea to do a coolant flush and replacement at the same time.

Is it common for the thermostat, radiator, timing belt, and water pump to constantly need changing? I've had my Camry 1994 for 7 years now and have had to constantly change the radiator and thermostat.
@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor
9 жыл бұрын
Marvinglz Hello. NO. Answer is 100% No. Do you use original Toyota parts or non original parts like made in china? Only Toyota genuine parts last many years like 15 years. Copy parts could last like one year.

@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor

Marvinglz Hi, please go to visit crash cars recycle center or car breakers or old car parts center. Find similar Camry like your and find also car with low miles. Low miles is key point! Then buy the parts with low price, like radiator offer 20 US$. Then remove parts and install those original genuine parts to your Toyota. And your Toyota last years. I do now just this way. :-)
@3DirtyKid3

+Marvinglz yes it is common to change those. Nothing last forever lol. timing belt and water pump should always be changed after 60k to 80k driving. radiator doesnt need any changes until it is cracked or too clogged. thermostat just change it when u have a overheating problem.

It will either be stuck open or stuck shut. If you are able to remove it, it should be closed at room temp. If it's open then it's stuck open and is bad. If it's closed but won't open when you bring it to a boil in a pot of water to around 180 to 190 F. then it's stuck closed and again it's bad.
