I have been working on cars for over two decades. I have watched hundreds of YT videos on car repair. The mechanic in this video is by far one of the best people that I have ever seen doing these types of videos. The demonstrated knowledge, narration, pace and tone where flawless. No superfluous talking . . . every single word that she uttered was valuable and accurate. This video should be the example that all other YT mechanics should use as the archetype of the perfect instructional video. Job well done.

Excellent job on the video! Best and most comprehensive of the ones currently online for this particular job. As for the ZTEC being an interference engine, it fits the technical definition of an interference engine (the highest point of the piston overlaps the lowest point of the valves), but in practice it is a noninterference engine, because of the fact that recesses have been molded into the pistons, so that the valves never actually hit the pistons.
@Dwrecksk8Yo
4 жыл бұрын
Yea it’s a non interference you can spin both cams all the way around without the valves kissing pistons with crank at top dead but technically your right about the lowest point of the valves being lower than highest point of top of piston but as you say in practice I’ve never seen a zetec bend valves and I’ve broken 2 timing belts on the highway with all my years modifying and building this engine

My understanding is the regular Zetec will freewheel, but the SVT is an interference engine. Going to be doing this next week as my tensioner blew itself apart, so I'm glad I don't have the SVT. FWIW, also the ideal time to replace the water pump, serpentine belt and its idler and tensioner, and the engine mounts while you've got all this stuff apart.
@phillipzx3754
3 жыл бұрын
At about the 6 minute mark she said it was a good thing the belt didn't break because the pistons and valves would hit. That's only true if it's an "interference" engine. The U.S. version of the Zetec ( the exception being the higher compression SVT version) is a non-interference engine. If the belt breaks all that will happen is the motor will stop running and then you get to call a tow truck or a really good friend.

I tried this project and failed miserably, I am not a mechanic, but have watch a lot of 1aauto.com videos, and had a lot of success, I got the nerve to do this and the one thing that's not noted in this video is you have to loosen the gear cams to put the timing belt back on, because I was not changing my cam seals I assumed you didn't have to loosen the gear cams but that should be noted in this video whether you are changing the gear cams SEALS or not you still have to loosen the gear cams.

Hey guys, first of all, thank you so much for the video. I did the timing belt change :D. I tried to hear the cars sound before I did the change but the battery was dead and I didnt have a jump starter so went ahead with the change, also changed the serp belt, timign belt tensioner, idler and cam and crank seals. I then bought a powerbank to jump start and then started the car up. It runs fine-ish. so for the engine mount I torqued the bolts on the engine to 80nm and the ones on the chasis to 50nm(caz I followed torque instructions from another source midway caz I was tired I guess). - The car vibrates very slightly when I climb hills, I guess I have to torque down the bolts to 80nm - Theres a slight ticking noise, idk if this was there before or if the belt tensioner is not adjusted correctly or if its just the fuel injectors clicking, I uploaded a video here -> kzitem.info/news/bejne/wmqE1Gqrjmtni6w&ab_channel=SaifAbdulCassim - Do you think I have to be worried about the clicking? does your car make a similar noise? its coming from near the back of the engine near the fuel injectors, as I said I dont have sounds from before the repair to directly compare since the battery was dead, but last it ran I dont think it made this noise, maybe I am being paranoid. i am planning to do a coolant flush in a few weeks, I wanna use the car regularly till then, so that I can flush things out in sequence, will also do a water pump change then, was thinking I ll tear into the engine again during that time and give the timing belt tensioner and idler a final torque, what do you think?

Ford Focus will have one of two engines, either the 2.0L DOHC (double overhead cams) engine Or the 2.0L SOHC (single overhead cam) engine. The 2.0L DOHC engine is an interference engine The 2.0L SOHC engine is a non-interference engine. If you don't know which of those two engines you have and you can't tell at a glance the difference between a DOHC engine and a SOHC engine, then look at the 8th digit of your VIN number. The 8th digit of your VIN number is XXXXX engine code. If the 8th digit of your VIN number is XXXXX '3' then you have the 2.0L DOHC engine, which is an interference engine. If the 8th digit of your VIN number is XXXXX 'P' then you have the 2.0L SOHC engine, which is a non-interference engine. This said, even in the “interference” engine there is enough valve clearence so the valves will not hit if the timing belt were to snap.

22:58 You should have cleaned the rocker cover before you took it off. Just saying.👍

she keeps saying it's an interference engine, but I googled and a Focus zetec isn't supposed to be.

Can a flywheel locking tool be used instead of an airgun for the bottom pulley?

What did they gain by engineering an interference engine? Why would someone create such a costly headache.

Those motors are NON-interference. I have the same Focus, same motor. If your timing belt snaps or it jumps time, you'll be fine. The motor won't start

Sadly not the SVT motor. Your belt goes so does the motor. Why they did this makes no sense as it was supposed to be a performance engine you would think it would be built for protection during hard driving.

Wow. Thank you so much for a brilliant “how to”. What was great about it was, as well as telling us what to do, you told us why. Brilliant, thank you so much. ❤️
