If you are going to do this job, make sure to turn the engine over COUNTER clockwise. And it’s probably a good idea to disconnect negative battery cable so you don’t short anything out when removing alternator (be sure to have your factory radio code).

What is the reason that you should turn the engine counter clockwise?
@theguitarist1290

That's the direction of rotation for the engine. If you turn it the other way you risk skipping a tooth, then you'll need to re-do the job

The reason he turned the engine clockwise has to do with the way the bolt is threaded into the crankshaft. If he tried to turn the engine in the opposite direction (CCW) the bolt would start to come out and not rotate the crankshaft.

This engine rotates counter clockwise, you didn't tension the belt. You put the most amount of slack possible on it. You will be lucky if it doesn't skip enough teeth to destroy every valve! Other than that its a very informational video for people looking to brush up.

@bradovern2045
5 жыл бұрын
You are told in the Timing Belt kit that you must turn crank counterclockwise to properly take up the slack. Going clockwise and improper belt tension will result in a violent correction of the tensioner and or spring and or belt. You just have to snug up the 19mm so that you can turn the engine without loosening the bolt. Make sure you get 2 10mm wrenches on the Alternator wire connector or you will snap the bolt and you'll be buying a new one like me. Yes you have to remove the valve cover to remove the top timing belt cover. That's the easiest part of the job! It took me almost 8 hours to complete. I used an Impact for the tougher bolts and nuts. No problem getting my crank off. I had 150 psi on a 1/2" NapaPro impact driver. There was antisieze on the bolt so this was not the first Timing Belt on my 02 civic. Working without a hoist of course. I removed the upper PowerSteering Bracket as well. Don't forget there are 5 14mm bolts on that big bracket.

In no way are we trying to discredit this video, because it is right on the money, with the exception that this engine rotates counter clockwise, so when rotating it to make sure the timing and belt tension is correct, you have to turn it counter clockwise , not clockwise..

Yes that engine turns counter clockwise. If you time the engine while turning it clockwise, at the very first crank the tensioner will try to adjust tension abruptly and cause damage to the tensioner and or make the belt skip a tooth or two. Great video. A couple things I ran into, 1) Better to leave timing belt tensioner spring off until belt is on, then hook up spring. Otherwise I couldn't get belt on. 2) While torn down it's very simple to change crank shaft seal. Almost put mine back together, but was concerned about a bit of oil that was at bottom of timing belt cover, then realized likely that seal. When crankshaft pulley off and timing belt off, just slide the lower timing belt gear off the crank, slide off the giant washer with slots in it, and pry out old seal with screw driver without scratching sides. May also want to consider camshaft seal while apart. Just need camshaft locked before taking off top timing belt pulley.

Awesome Video!!! Successfully replaced belt, tension pulley and water pump. Thought my water pump was the issue, but ended up being the spring on the tension pulley failed. Lucky the timing belt didn't skip a beat before I got to it. Also had to replace the lower cam cover as it was fractured. Very weird.Really appreciated the part about the 19mm cam pulley bolt. What a b___h!! Used a cheater bar and really reefed on it and it finally broke free. Don't know if I would have gone all-out on it if it hadn't been for the video. Wish I had smaller, skinnier fingers when working on these Honda engines.Thanks Again. Saved me several hundred dollars.

I'd like to see a close shot of the pulley on the crank before the bolt is installed. When I put my pulley back on it appeared to not slide fully onto the crank and that concerned me. In other words, the end of the crank was not flush with the pulley. If that is normal, great. I have nothing to worry about except that I'd like to see the key be a little longer.

The tensioner bolt as well Guys. I was having troubles getting passed 25ft/lb torque because the guy installing recommended 33ft/lbs of torque (18:05 of the video) The honda repair manual on page 6-27 clearly states "9.8 Nm (1.0 kgf/m, 7.2 lbf/ft)". This caused me to strip the housing! There's always a chance the housing had a little bit of damage that's true but It got way worse when trying to get up to 33 ft lbs... still probably would have been fine If I wasn't trying to torque 4-5 times higher... Like seriously man.... You just caused me so much grief over that one bolt that I could have been good by now. I had trust in this youtube video but now ill be having to double check everything that is said. Please put an edit in your video stating this, and double check the manual yourself!

Depends if you are working with a warm engine or cold engine. If you are working with a warm engine and remove the spark plugs you will pull all the threads out with em and give yourself a headache and a lot of lost money destroying your cylinder head. Never remove spark plugs on a warm aluminum block. The only time it is ok is on engine with steel heads. Most people don't get up in the morning and make it a project, nor do they have time to wait 3+ hours to let an engine cool.

Can the timing belt be overtightened accidentally or was it a bad bearings or what? Because I got my timing belt, water pump and tensioner replaced on the auto repair shop because I just bought my civic 2005 3 months ago and not sure if the belt is replaced before So I think it's a good thing to have it replaced. The car runs smooth before the process. Now when car is in idle, it sounds normal but not as normal as it sounds before I got my engine timing belt area opened up. Now when you push the accelerator, you can hear a grinding noise in that timing belt-engine area. I have no chance to go back to the shop since I moved to a new place. But the car's engine sound got worse now. Before, my car engine is silent and runs smooth no other issue whatsoever. I noticed the changes when I drove home from the shop, but I was thinking it's normal part of breaking in process, but days and months past it didn't go away. So I'm worried.

I watched this just for fun, but do not rotate your engine the WRONG way when you get the T-Belt back on, to verify the timing, it is called "the wrong way" both as a reason and a description. My Cam gear is upside down when the crank pulley mark lines up.... The engine is a Japanese domestic market engine....I don't want to mess with the cam gear car worked before....Im only changing the timing belt and water pump because Im also changing the front main seal and theres oil on the timing belt already so Im gonna change it. I don't know if I should mess with the camngear or not 🤔

i thought adjusting the tension you are supposed to turn the motor counter clock wise not clock wise.
@joevignolor4u949
5 жыл бұрын
You don't really adjust the belt tension. The belt tensioner and its spring do that when you pull the pin out. The reason he turned the engine clockwise has to do with the way the bolt is threaded into the crankshaft. If he tried to turn the engine in the opposite direction (CCW) the bolt would start to come out and not rotate the crankshaft.

I like your video, but all these vids claim you need to pull valve cover. You do not. The top timing cover has three bolts and cam sensor. Undo them all, and with the engine mount removed, you can pull the bottom of cover away from motor while also pushing down. The timing cover will then clear the lip of the valve cover. Makes job way easier and faster... you can pull both engine mount studs too if you need more room.

Do you think an impact will work to remove the crankshaft pulley 19mm bolt, instead of having to use the cheater pipe? I don’t have the enough room under my floor jacks to get that much leverage.
@JrSpitty

An impact will work but its highly NOT recommended. You will score the crankshafts bearings and cause premature failure. Its better to take your time and not risk the lower end engine rebuild.

Thank you for the detailed video. This video helped me replace my wife's 2005 Civic LX timing belt and water pump. Additionally, I replaced the crankshaft seal, which was leaking. I do not recall the video mentioning the valve cover gasket. It must be replaced unless you want an oil leak from the valve cover.

on the 7 generation civics is a snap if u loosen up the tensioner bolt ( not the spring, u leave that stretched out n connected ); like butter. On my other car a mazda 626, it's a PITA until I figured out how to beat the SOAB! ( basically on that one, use a mini sliding clamp to hold the belt on the crankshaft but the trick is to have the belt halfway on the sprocket, halfway on the tensioner and idler, and when u get to the two camshaft sprockts on top, u have just enough slack to little by little push the belt gradually ON evenly on all sprockts, idlers, tensioners involved - 5 of 'em! ).

Why do I need to have the belt in the same place as when I took it off
@joevignolor4u949
5 жыл бұрын
This is the timing belt. It coordinates the relative positions of the crankshaft and camshaft as they rotate. More specifically, the belt coordinates the movements of the pistons going up and down in the cylinders and the opening and closing of all the valves. If the belt isn't set just right according to the timing marks the engine probably won't run and it may even get damaged internally when you try to start it.

I like 1A Auto for the most part. But if you are someone with absolutely no car knowledge do much more research then just their videos. They forgot to include important steps or mess up on the name of a part (For ex they changed the AC switch not the coolant temp but said they were switching coolant temp) so it makes it frustrating. Don’t ever just trust one video. Do your research
