Just did t belt job today I advise if you are doin this job buy the lisle crank bolt socket I did and it is worth every penny . Took it right off 1st time no hassle no heat so silly hair dryer no 4ft breaker bar no honda crank octagon socket . Funny how they say it 1a auto kit but a rebranded gates kit .gates kit is made in China I went with aisin kit made in Japan . Took me 4hrs 1st time doing job . This video made all the difference. helped with step by step . I have a 09 odyssey to get engine mount bolts out you have to remove engine computer and remove entire right side engine mount to get both top bolts out . Just so u all know otherwise same for both also I used a grade 8 bolt to compress t belt tensioner did not bend . Thanks for good video I recommend to u 1a auto to start selling crank bolt socket. This is a great video. It doesnt skip over the real world problems one runs into working on an older car. I wish I had videos like this when I was a kid. I remember tacking a weekend to break free an old celica crank bolt . It was glued on too. We did not know that. I forget how we eventually got it, but I know we damaged it. In fact im not sure we even freed it on the first weekend of working on it. This is how it works on old cars. Patience, and tricks of the trade, and usually some experience. And big ass breaker bars.

To compress the tensioner you can use the stakes that hold down the battery. That is the same thread. You could also just take the tensioner off and compress it slowly on a bench vise. I personally would rec taking out the pcm. Removing the motor mount. It make alot more room. Then you can take out the motor mount bracket from the top. Be careful with the tension pulley bolt. It breaks easily and has low torque spec. Rec to replace the idler puppy bolt.

It is difficult finding a bolt with long enough threads to compress the timing belt tensioner. I used the Battery hold down but it wasn't easy to turn do to interference. The best method is probably not to fool around and cut the timing belt A steel wire brush should never be used to clean bolt threads. Clean them with a brass or stainless steel brush and solvent. Honda says replace the bolts on the engine portion of the motor mount bracket.

After reading several reviews I have decided to just buy the timing belt parts from a Honda dealer. The main problem is this is an interference motor meaning if the belt has a problem engine is toast. The most common issue is the tensioner if that goes out good chance the belt will skip a tooth and engine is done. Cars of this age not worth overhauling an engine.

You can use the battery tray hold down to thread onto the pulley to hold the tension also
@jasonalexander6417
2 жыл бұрын
Honda doesn't use thread locker for the crank bolt. Your actually supposed to use oil on certain parts of the bolt. Another option for removing the crank bolt is to use a 19 mm socket that fits snug to the bolt with a long breaker bar or ratchet and then set it up against the suspension arm. Disconnect the spark plugs or disable the fuel pump and then bump the key once quickly to crank the engine over. You don't want a continuous crank, just bump the key as needed. Works like a charm. Note that this applies to crankshafts that spin clockwise.

She was losing a lot on a 1/2 drive breaker bar for the crank bolt. We use a 3/4 drive and put a long pipe on it. We're close to the ground and use extensions to get it out from the fender and support the extensions on a jack stand. We've had to stand on the pipe and when the bolt lets lose it sounds like a shotgun. It appears the crank socket she's talking about appears to work well, it thicker and has more mass. You can turn a crank in either direction because something spinning in a circle will turn either way without damage. It's just when you're aligning timing marks you go in the direction of cranking rotation to keep the belt tight on the pull side so all the marks align equally.

Quick question for you. I pulled my crankshaft pulley off, then pulled the lower TB cover off. The TB Idler pulley had the ball bearings falling out and was completely shot... when I turned the crank to line up the marks, the front cam mark was off about one tooth, and the rear cam was off by about 4-5 teeth. Can I just remove the TB, manually turn the cams the little bit needed to line up, then reinstall all the pulleys and belt again? The car was running fine, but I think the cam pulleys slipped a few teeth when the idler pulley let go.
