I'm having an audio issue and I believe resting Windows is the best idea, I've tried EVERYTHING. If I would reinstall windows, should I choose "keep my files" or "remove everything" (considering it might be an audio problem)? Thank you.

I would BACK UP EVERYTHING (just in case), and then I would choose "keep my files".

Are all system drivers preserved or they need to be reinstalled?

It's basically a reinstall of Windows, so everything that would work for that just works. If, after originally installing Windows you needed to separately install additional drivers, you'll need to do that again. it's rare these days, though. A reset generally includes everything you need.

Still confused . After resetting-should a system restore (from your previous backup) be performed, and will this put the machine back to as near original state, (but working correctly). I really don't want to completely start again. My machine is just taking 5 to 10 mins to boot up nowadays. Its upgrade was from windows 7 Pro.

No. You can't "system restore" from a backup. (The feature called "System Restore" is just a glorified registry backup,.) You can restore an entire backup image which will restore your entire machine to the state it was in at the time the backup was taken, but this would completely overwrite whatever the result of a "reset this pc" had done.

@@askleonotenboom even more confused now. I thought backups were incase of damages to the drive/data etc. Get a new hard drive, install Windows and use backup to repair or bring back to original condition. Now, I don't see the point of backups at all.

@@Mr29Kevin Yes. Backups allow you to restore to a replacement hard drive. An Image backup contains everything, so you don't need to reinstall anything - it all gets restored when you restore the backup. Please don't confuse "System Restore" with a backup. That's a specific feature in Windows that is NOT a backup. Backing up remains an important part of using your computer.

Could you use system restore to do the same thing.
@askleonotenboom

No. System restore is a very small (and unreliable) subset.

My PC is five years old and is having problems updating one or two updates - fails. It also uses 100% disk for about 20-30 minutes and then settles down. I have changed some settings to make disc usage better but not perfect. So last resort is “reset the PC.” Hope to keep files and have already manually saved what is important to me. Any thoughts before I start? I don’t really cares if it messes up because eventually soon will be buying a replacement PC - near future. Thanks if anyone has any advice…😎

Do I need to activate windows again after resetting?

Generally no. It should activate itself automatically.
