I have seen some debate on whether to use epoxy resin or polyester resin to refinish the outside of a kevlar canoe. I went to Western Canoe and Kayak yesterday in Abbotsford B.C. to ask this as they are also the factory where Clipper canoes are built. I was told to use polyester resin. It is what the ultralight kevlar canoes are made with. He said it's much easier to work with than epoxy, and will bond better because they are the same material. He said to lightly sand the surface but not so much that you are getting down to the kevlar. Another good thing is that polyester resin is much cheaper than epoxy resin.

Is this the Process? 1. Sand off old resin. 2. Alcohol wipe down 3. one coat Marine epoxy resin - protects from UV. 4. coat of 303 resin What grit sandpaper did you use? Thanks for posting. Love the attitutde. 🤙

That’s somewhere around 60 to 80 grit you want to get off any old flakey resin. You should be using 303 on any watercraft once to twice a year, it’s like sunscreen for your boat. Wait a couple of days before putting it on a refinished boat.

I thought you had to varnish over epoxy to protect it from UV?

No, the 303 you put on after it fully cures is like sunscreen for your boat. That stuff is amazing and should be used at least twice a year on any watercraft.

@@Trilordy Nice Idea! I only used 303 on plastic boats, but epoxy is a plastic. 303 twice a year will be so much better than varnishing once a year. Thanks!
