Thanks! Great tips! Would have been cool to see a zoomed out view to see the freshly buffed section compared to the rest.

1. Applying the compound with a wax applicator or rag will save your arms. 2. Make sure the pad doesn't wobble, it will cause swirl marks. 3. Move the buffer horizontally in 2 foot sections, random movements will cause the buffer to tilt and cause swirl marks. 4. Wash the pad or use a clean one for the wax stage so none of the compound is put back on. Washing the boat between the compound and wax steps will guarantee there's no compound left over. The buffers I've used at our car dealership spin at 2800rpm. Beginners quickly realize how fast you can burn the paint.

Swirl marks aren't caused by the machine wobbling however it can exacerbate it. Swirl marks occur with aggressive compounding be it using a wool pad or a heavy cutting compound. Using a rotary with a wool pad and a heavy compound will ALWAYS result in swirls. It needs to be finished down with a foam pad and polish.

@@glumdogtrillionaire man, it's like you're new? I can swirl a car with a microfiber towel on a random orbital or DA. A wobbly pad most certainly will put swirls in your finish dingus. That guy, if you'd listen, just tried to help your ignorant-ass. Use a double-sided pad that's well balanced, use some pattern to ensure even cutting over the whole area. Don't stop compounding till it looks like wet paint. Clean it. Polish it with a polymer and a new/clean double-sided-balanced polish pad. Drop the attitude, keep trying and get good. PS, I can compound on black paint/gelcoat/plasticglass, to perfection (swirl-free) with any decent compound and a super coarse wool pad. If you can't, learn to. Then post a vid/talk shit.
Would this work on a spa that's been without a cover for a few years?

If it’s made of gelcoated fiberglass ( like most boats) yes. If it’s made of acrylic, do some more research.

Can you do the same on ribbed fiberglasss surface?
@BoatingMagazine

@@temirtaragay8932 You’d only get the “ peaks” buffed on a ribbed surface, and the “ valleys” would just fill with compound. We’ve never worked on a ribbed surface, but suspect that circular polishing is in appropriate. We’d try manual application working inline with the ridges. Good luck. ( Cleaning and then painting may be your best bet)

Can you set up a regular grinder to work as a buffer?

Yes if you want to a burn your gel coat and b cause yourself 2 times the work out...
How many times after all the solvents have baked out in the sun can u do that before you burn through the gel coat? Soak the gel coat up with penatrol first So u don't grind through it.
@BoatingMagazine

Penatrol is typically used to give a quick, temporary shine and color boost to a hull, often by unscrupulous sellers.It does not last.

If you want swirls and a glossy but not brilliant finish and for it to fade out in a matter of weeks, you're right.
