G'day mate. You have zeroed in on the solution there. I imagine most of us do the scribeing thing with the calipers. Keep on keeping on.

Great stuff. I fixed mine by rubbing my finger nail along the edges. Thanks.

One of my cheap calipers would always jump to 5.01mm for some reason. In desperation (I'm too cheap to throw it away) I pulled the scale off to reveal the brass underneath, cleaned the glue off with solvent, and all appears to be OK now.

Have the same on a magnusson. Looks like it happens when it is "opened/stretched" too fast, nearly never happens when using the wheel. Mine gets a 5.05mm error, and it looks like it's cumulative, as if i continue to move it it eventually gets 10.1mm, then 15.15mm and so on error value.

Yes but you have to remove the burr from time to time. However there is a solution to that too. Just glue your calliper to a vacuum cleaner and clean the burr before every measurement. Or even better glue your vacuum cleaner to your caliper if you wish.

The switch pad is probably buggered. They use a sort of printed on silicon sheet contactor that I expect will wear away after time. Maybe it's oiled up.

is the big deal people make about precision calculators really justified? I've always felt that if you need more precision than cheap calipers can provide, you ought to be using a micrometer anyway. I can conceive that there may be situations where calipers are a better tool for the job, but does anyone have any examples?

Hi Rob, The precision (more expensive) calipers are more consistent (trustworthy) in their measurements from my experience. I have used that cheap one in the video for 30 years and it worked OK, but I never really trusted the readings. There were too many times I found it was out enough to be a nuisance. Micrometers are better for some jobs as you don't have the parallax issue (they always pull up square) and good ones are very accuarte. For most basic work calipers and verniers are fine, but the better ones are just that, better. Cheers Rob

I have a brand new one that has not be abused and it does same thing except sometimes it goes back to a negative number. I cannot trust it. Guess I need to buy a micrometer.

@Xynudu

Never had an issue with the battery cap on mine. Also battery life is pretty good. These calipers come in many flavours, even though they all look the same. The really cheap versions chew up batteries pronto and don't have low battery warning. The better ones (like mine) cost more and have better circuitry and maybe better plastics. They are good value, and you can buy sheets of button batteries for peanuts for them off Ebay. Cheers Rob

Nice trick, Rob. I have four dig calipers. Three will hold zero consistently. The third will not, and I think it's the electronics. When my calipers do not hold zero I hold them up to a bright light, fully shut. If you see any light at all there is swarf or dirt on the blades. My calipers agree with each other to a thou. They also agree with my micrometers to .01 mil. Digital calipers are quite accurate if you treat them nicely. One tends to abuse them, unlike a micrometer, which most people do respect.

Yes, I agree. I use that cheap one for most jobs, and if I damage it - too bad. I have a high grade one for precision work, that I look after and have greater trust in for readings on critical jobs. Rob
