He's talking about PHYSICAL stress, not emotional stress. This fish is a beautiful cold-hearted killing machine - he's not "scared" of the tank, the boat, the fisherman, or anything else. The tank pushes oxygen through through the gills and allows the fish to recover without being handled - well-designed.

As a fisheries biologist I can't emphasize more how important it is to know and practice how to release a fish. Studies have been done on release mortalities and for some species it's close to 50 percent if not done correctly. I have a fishing club and I teach how to release a fish plus a bunch of other things like how to perp a fish for later eating so it has the best texture and flavor. Thanks for explaining your process in detail. I learned a few things.

It’s amazing how many people act like fish think like humans at all. Seriously the fish is probably more comfortable in that tank than it is in open water. Like seriously if fish could scream the ocean would be an awful place since fish are constantly trying to eat one another. Even smaller fish will pick on larger fish just because they can. Those who have never had an actual aquarium before let alone had aggressive fish in an aquarium wouldn’t understand how fish actually are. Like even communal fish that are considered “peaceful” are pricks to each other. They’re just not hyper aggressive or territorial so they can cohabitate as long as there is enough space and food available.

I was boating with my family on Lake St. Clair back in the 1960s when we observed another boater trolling. Suddenly he hooked a big muskie. It was fighting hard, leaping out of the water. After awhile the line went slack. The fish was gone. We approached the fisherman and he showed us the big lure. All the hooks had been bent straight, allowing the fish to escape. I am glad to see the muskie are still doing well.

What he means with stress is that the fish body muscles are stressed from the fight. „Stressed“ is maybe the wrong word, „exhausted“ would be the better definition. So the fish is exhausted and tries to regain oxygen into that muscles, just like you would after a marathon. So they give him a „safespace“ where he can regain that bevor getting out into the lake. Imagine the next predator is waiting for that exhausted fish so that’s why they put him into that little loud tank.

Lost one at the boat on a smallmouth dropshot rig. Spilled my beer, put the rod in the holder. As I finish cleaning the mess up, my rod bends 90°. Flew over to my rod, and went to the front of the boat. 5 seconds later the skie jumps a couple feet out of the water. We all scream “ITS A SKIE”. It runs under the boat after a couple minutes, and I end up putting my arms in the water, laying down on the front of the boat. Reel screaming. A couple more minutes to by and I get the skie calmed down by the side of the boat. Too bad it doesn’t fit in the 48 inch net my friend just got. I spent a minute calming down, knowing the skie isn’t freaking out. What an intimidating creature. I slowly got a grip on the tail, and as I tried to get my hand under the gill plate, it shook, breaking the 15 pound fluoro at its mouth. The hook wasn’t in a bad spot on the mouth, so I hope that fish survived and the hook eventually popped. I will never forgive myself for letting a skie go, with a hook in its mouth. I tried my damndest though. Glad to see you’re recovering from the ick Josh. Tight lines from the e. Coli rich Metro Beach shores to you.

When a fish is fatigued and you just throw them back in they’ll likely drown from not being able to swim properly, I believe anyways.

You don't HAVE to do it, but some bigger fish will need a longer time to recover. This tank allow them to give proper time to the fish without hurting their fishing (They can keep trolling while the fish recovers)

When I was a kid, I went camping with my family from Colorado and we saw two 4ft tiger musky in an overflow stream of the lake.. my grandpa and his friend got in the water to catch one by hand and brought a pistol to shoot it in the head once they had it in their grip. The fish kept swimming past them and thru them then one jumped out of the water and my grandpas friend shot it almost directly between the eyes. The fish was flopping around violently even 20 mins later. Those fillets were massive and the meat was beautiful!

@@ericsweeney4544it's pretty funny that you think the pike jumped into the thank by it's self and also he just said it's stressed. Also if you don't wanna stress the fish physically or emotionally than don't keep it in a tank. It's like saying a fish is happier in a tank than lake but then he released it in the lake. What he's doing it's bad from the pike's point of view, not his point of view cuz he likes to show it off so he needs an excuse.

I'm glad you have that modified tank there to help the fish recover after it's gone through a bad battle. I've seen too many fishermen catch fish and just throw them back in the water after they fought. And something underwater grabs it turtle or something. I always bothers me. Because with Catch and Release you're supposed to catch some release them. But you're also supposed to make sure that they're functional. And what I mean by that is you're supposed to make sure the fish can survive on its own after it's been caught. If you don't move that fish back and forth in the water before releasing it it's going to die or get eaten by something else I like the fact that you're giving this fish a Fighting Chance to continue to do what it does. I like the fact that you have that modified aquarium on your fishing boat
