I do like these little trees, I'm the 3rd home for an older ficus. That tree has suffered loads of neglect and abuse, was thrown away twice and survived a massive drought when I couldn't water my plants for 8 months. I've had that plant for about 16 years now, repotted it once and that's about it. Tough as nails :)

Got one of these about a year ago. He did okay for a week and then quickly dropped all leaves. I accidentally left him unwatered for almost two weeks and I was sure I had killed him... But fast forward 6 months, there have come up a couple of new sprouts from the dried stem! He looks really sad and naked but I'm impressed he survived If I manage to keep him going in the right direction I hope he'll manage to grow into a nice little tree again For a plant that's so sensitive they're also surprisingly resilient. Just don't throw in the towel on them they can make a recovery

That is one thing I hope all my viewers learn from me. Plants are resilient! I've learned this lesson so many times in the past, and still to this day, I have to slow down sometimes. I'll even get plants from friends, family, and other people that always think are dead. I give them a little bit of sunlight, a moderate amount of water, and poof! I almost always see green appear. They don't want to die either! Life finds away!!

I love these trees! Congrats on yours it's looking good! I've got a few of these guys, my oldest one being at least 40 - given to me by my mom, purchased by her before I was even born. It tends to grow very long, weepy shoots. Another I have grows quite zig-zaggy and has very small leaves. They're fantastic trees to have. Pretty much the only tree that can be treated like a houseplant, live indoors and still thrive. They seem fussy, but in my experience, they're really quite tough. They'll readily drop their leaves when facing stress (drought, pests, light level changes) but will quickly replace any lost leaves, seemingly unharmed. I'm border-line abusive to mine - hauling them in and out of the house, depending on the weather. Or with prolonged periods indoors with dry, forced air heating and low light. Yours will be just fine. They're also great to air-layer and cuttings will strike root readily. Extremely vigorous root-growers. Great video, man!

You just look at it and he drops the leaf. We call it Old Man Willow and it's big and in our living room (east window) and he makes me sleepy because he's Green and pretty but just dramatic. He probably lost a leaf just because I'm writing about it.

Thanks! Love your videos they help me so much. I bought a small benjamina a few years ago before I new much about house plants and it's thriving. Never drops leaves. But this year I have bought a variegated version and it's dropping one or two leaves every day and I've had it for almost a year now! The original all green version is great though. Good luck.

Hi Justin, another great video, always interesting, good luck with your Ficus Benjamina. I've had a few over the years but, they always seem to lose their leaves and die. You are more experienced with house plants, so you should have better luck than I.

Yeah, they could drop leaves for any number of reasons. The foremost being their location. They want the perfect spot and they want to stay there forever. This means the right amount of light, regular and avid amounts of humidity, moderate water, not to be overfed, and not to be next to any drafty windows or doors. Pests can also cause some leaf drop too. Thanks for watching man! Happy New Year too!

Lmao. They can make great pets, most of the time as one or two. But if you get even a small flock they can be persistent little....fucks. I couldn't imagine what they would be like in almost middle California weather! Poor tree 🍃

How often do you feed this plant or what do you feed this plant? I have had my plant for 28 years. I always lose leaves and it doesn't show much growth, it grows really slow. I was wondering whether to transplant it again this spring but I wanted to know what you feed it thank you for such an awesome video 👍❤️🤗🙏

another point on not throwing away plants: when they bounce back after dying, the new growth will be much better acclimated to your home, the plant is likely to thrive

I got mine about 30 years ago, it was about 2’ tall and losing leaves all over, it was a £5 bargain at B&Q home and garden. It did really well, it didn’t like being moved, it always lost leaves if I moved it but it recovered. It has been in its present home for about 3 years and the last six months, it has been losing leaves and is looking very bare. It’s winter here at the moment so I don’t want to water it too much or feed it just yet. It had a repot about 18 months ago and it seemed happy, I don’t know what is wrong, we’ve checked for bugs and made sure it isn’t sitting in water, we’ve checked stuff just to check stuff. I can’t think what is wrong, if anyone has any ideas, I’m more than happy to try them. Many thanks.

How's your light situation? Mine seemed to be doing the exact same and then I got them (I have three now) a full spectrum LED light and I haven't seen them drop anymore leaves, unless they get super thirsty. I don't water them from the tap. My water is very hard here so I give them, because they are so fussy, distilled water. This has helped too. How is your humidity in your home? Since it is winter most of our homes are bone dry. I keep all three of mine next to the humidifier too and they love it. Let me know how all of these factors are and I'll see where we can go from there!

I recieved a ficus for my birthday but of course it had been in a box for quite a while. When I got it the leaves were all dry and curled. So I repotted it and found a small worm like creature in its root mass. I have repoted and it has been here about a month but Im not seeing any change. Not sure how often I should water it right now. Dont want to drown it or not give it enough. Im gonna set it in a southern window area and give it some time. If you can give me any advice on how to snap it out of its distress pls do advise Thank you

I have one of these trees. I inherited, 3 years ago. It has survived but has not grown at all. What can I do to help it grow? I do give it plant food every 6 to 8 weeks. But there has been literally no change in its size or leaf growth. It will lose a leaf and gain a leaf. Please advise.

Does cutting the roots cause a lot of leaf loss? How long until they stop dropping leaves? Or atleasr ease up a bit.. I was checking the roots of my plant and when I pulled it up some roots ripped. It's been about a month and it looses a lot of leaves every day..

Great vid! I love ficus bejamina and concur with them being a bit fussy. As a side note on any stressed plants, isn't it best not to fertilize them for a time until they pick up and start responding to better care in general? My ficus never does get many leaves on it. I'm not sure if that is a light or a watering problem.
@TheGreenAlchemist
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would agree with you about not feeding it until it's not stressed anymore. The wrong amount of fertilizer could stress it out even more. I was trying to talk about fertilizer in general for a ficus tree, not on a stressed one. I would venture to say it's not receiving the right amount of light. I'm not sure if you are in winter right now like I am but it's considerably harder to get the correct amount of light for the right duration. I have both of mine under full spectrum LED grow lights and that's helped mine tremendously. I post the ones I use on mine in the description box of every video if you want the same ones I use. They've made some great advancements over the last decade, they're no longer very costly to purchase or run.
