one of the best subway systems I have ever used, what I love is that there are glass doors that won't open until the train has stopped at the station (makes sure no one can jump in front or cause other problems, wish we had that for Caltrain and BART in the bay area!) Also if you get a Tmoney or Cashbee you can use these cards on buses and the subway throughout all of South Korea and Jeju island (wish we had that here)!

Seoul's subway system looks pretty straight forward. I like how they have a machine to add additional funds to your card upon exiting in case you go further than you planned, and your card is almost out of funds. This is a very helpful video for when I plan a trip to Seoul one day!

Great Video! As a Korean, I'm proud that foreigners like the subway system! Only one small error on the video, the last part, refund part. Those machines are not for refunding tmoney cards, but for single use tickets. You can ride the seoul subway via 2 methods, tmoney card(just as the video) or single use tickets. The price is both same in seoul(in other regions in Korea, single use tickets are roughly 10% expensive). However, for single use tickets, you have to pay a 500 won(0.5$) deposit fee every time you buy a ticket. After riding, you place your card to that machine and your 500 deposit is refunded! Please note that it is hard for foreigners to get a refund for your t money card, since it takes roughly a week and you might need a Korean bank account. So don't top up too much at once. One side note: you can use your tmoney card on convenience stores like 7 eleven, gs25, and cu, just like cash!

There is some misunderstanding in this video. The refunds part, you said it refunds your charged money but that is not it. The machine actually refund the deposit of the "card" you bought. The card you introduce here is T-money card which you can use most of the transportation including subway, bus, even taxi. But there is this orange one-time usable card(you can use it mutiple time but it is kinda vulnerable so dont) you can buy in 500 won(50 cents) this card is only usable in the subway and if you used it up, you can go to the refund machine and refund your 500 won but not the money you charged in there. You can buy T-money card as souvenir but if you are not interested, just use one time card and don't charge too much or you might lose your money. Also, the machine do not refund your T-money card. It is only for 500 won card.

Let me correct just one thing. The REFUND MACHINE in the last part is NOT for T-MONEY card. It's for the card type ticket for one-time ride. The card ticket charges you the fare plus the card deposit(500won KR). You return the used card and get 500won back.

When I visited Seoul in 1998, the tickets were paper with a magstripe. And if you rode the (then) brand-new purple line, the turn styles weren't turn styles at all. They were these pads that would come out right in your shins. I called them shin-bangers, and I absolutely hated them.
@TheDodges.Travels

As of April, 2023 this video is outdated. 😞 Seoul has eliminated the TMoney card and is pushing everybody to the TMoney app, which is only in Korean language. Single-trip cards are available and at least those vending machines do provide other languages, but are still somewhat confusing. EDIT: TMoney cards are still available for purchase at convenience stores, just not from the vending machines in the subway.

I mean the biggest bill it takes is10,000. There are no 20,000 bills. So you'd have to use two 10,000 bills. Don't quote me on this though, I didn't use those machines often. I usually went to the convenient stores to top-up. Now I use my bank card.
@검불그스름

I'm not sure if they accept 50,000-won bills, but if they do, yes they will give you the change. When you select a 5,000-won top-up and insert a 10,000-won bill, you are given a 5,000-won change. That's the whole point of selecting the amount of top-up.
