Hey guys that Black Bear is no joke. I've come down it on a 690 with help from a rider of far more skill than I. That part just above the curve you parked at was too much for me. The rest of Black Bear I didn't find bad. Today I own a 890R and would not attempt it. I think it helps to have much longer legs and a lighter bike. Cheers to you both.

The honest answer is it depends on what you want to do. You will NOT take a 1290 on this ride. Those things SUCK off-road. They’re good for some light 2 track. There might be 10 pros in the world that would take them on hairy shit. They’re meant for long trips on gravel/hard pack/paved roads. They’re 90% road bike, 10% off-road. Maybe. The 790/890r is more like 60/40 road/off-road. With proper tires you might be able to swing it 45/55 road off-road. You “can” take them on gnarly shit with enough practice and skill but your 300 will spank the ever living fuck out of them on anything but light 2 track. The ONLY reason to buy an adv is if you want to travel long distance on the bike alone. If you have a truck and trailer it to off-road sections, it’s a complete waste of money. If you put aggressive Knobbies on an adv bike, you defeat the entire purpose of them. By the time you even get to the off-roading your tires are shot. If you plan to do even a modicum of technical riding the 1290 isn’t an option.
@herberttl

I’m definitely a novice rider so would never attempt this pass but I noticed you are running different tires on your bikes. It may not be possible to know unless you rode each other’s bikes, but do you have an idea which configuration worked best?

I am going to ask you a very serious question. Considering grade of the stairs around waterfall... is it scientifically possible to walk a 225 lbs 150 cc scooter down all that rock throttling breaks while either straddling the scooter or walking next to it? I have watched all of your Ouray/Silverton stuff and stairs is about the only thing I am afraid of. Do you think it is possible to just walk the darn thing down? I saw that when you hiked up you walked it down a little. Did you get on it because it was easier for you or did you try walking it down and it was too hard? Thank you.

I think I could do it, with your machine, just take your time. I only walked to help my buddy, and show things, I have been wanting to get a New 2021 Honda Trail 125 just to give you an idea, and I would absolutely ride that down it.

More to Living, there is a video of a guy that did just as you asked, he partially straddled his bike while walking it, and also walked beside it to get down the steps. The bike was on the heavy side and he mentioned that he was a novice so I'm sure it was what he thought the safest way down, and after all you have to feel comfortable with whatever way you chose. I'm considering getting a Kaw 250 just to ride BBPass, I dont want a heavy bike and I'm only 5'8" so the taller bikes make me uncomfortable,

@@dougupah8778 thank you. I saw that video. In a cruel twist of fate i broke my leg before my trip so took my 4x4 instead. I never made it past peak from silverton side because when they finally opened the trail it turned into a zoo. Caravans of obnoxious jeepers blocking and cutting each other off made like a 2 mile backup. I drope to base of waterfall from telluride side and even 2 weeks later switchbacks and steps were super clobbered and cars were coming down. Hardly what you call “at one with nature” when you have to sit in gridlock :-( Maybe next time.

You beat me to the title change suggesting. I try not to say anything negative. So I’ll just reiterate that trails like this are not to be taken lightly and if you two got lucky not to get hurt. The local sherif gets mad at having to rescue people who just don’t have the skills and plenty do get in serious trouble on it. Do not get in way over your head on this one. Unless you know exactly what you’re getting into and are confident you have the skills and equipment for the trail, please don’t follow their example. PS: I’m a local.

Nice to see a video of it. We did this in August 2021 in the rain on 790r, 890r and T7. No crashes and everyone rode their bike. It was a good ride. We Went too fast and should of enjoyed it bit more and take videos and pictures but the rain was pushing us. This area is so fun. I found out cover the brakes but let it go and ride out it is safer then sliding. These bikes can handle it with ease. It’s a mind game. Glad you made it and cool if you to help ride another mans bike.

Such a great video. I've got a BMW R1250 GSA and having been wondering about doing this. While I know it's engineered to make this, the steps are by far the most intimidating. After watching this, I would remove the three hard cases just before the steps to reduce top weight and allow the bike to squeeze tighter to the cliffs. I'd then walk back up and retrieve the cases and haul them back down to the bike. As noted below, it's primarily a head game because the machines will make it just fine.
