How/why these rig changes de-power the rig: moving the halyard down the gaff leaves a longer, thus more flexible section of gaff above the halyard. This increased flexibility spills more wind off the upper part of the sail, in gusts as well as in steady wind. The halyard has to attach lower on the mast to keep the sail at the same height off the deck, thus the various ways to lower the halyard-to-mast attachment point. This also moves the whole sail aft. All else equal this would increase weather helm. Presumably the de-powering of the aft upper portion of sail compensates for "enough" of that that excessive weather helm is avoided?

Great content as usual. I'm surprised I've never seen anyone use a low friction ring when tying up a Jen's rig. It really wouldn't add any additional time to the setup and would drastically reduce friction abrasion on the lines. It would also make it far easier to hoist. For example, let's say you wanted a 12 inch Jen's rig, take a 24ish inch piece of line, wrap it around the mast and pass both ends through the low friction ring, and then tie it off at the mast cap. Then just pass the halyard through the same ring. Bam, done, but maybe I'm under-thinking it.🙂

That is actually one way to do it! The disadvantage to that system is that the position on thr mast is fixed, unless you retie the line to a different height. But ive used that system you described and it works well !

Amazing just a couple of inches makes that much difference. Took me a few times with this video and others to get the idea of what Doug mentions at the end. If you have some distance between the normal halyard and the jens and have them both full on (a fully tensioned Gust Adjust) you may see your spar bend the opposite way. This clarified how the whole thing works. Hope to see you on the water...

I watched this a couple of times. I may need to watch it more to really understand. So far I do think that any moving rope on rope instead rope passing through a block or fairlead of some sort is going to cause accelerated chafe on the various halyards, lassos, purchases, and hitches. A serious racer may care more about winning than how fast their lines wear out .

Lee, you need to go on a sailing adventure. Directly west of the Sea Cliff YC, on the Sands Point side of Hempstead Harbor, there are two private beaches. Back in the 1960's both had boat houses full of Sailfish and Sunfish. The one to the south was/is Beacon Hill Beach. It was a Homeowner's Association beach for the Beacon Hill neighborhood. It is south of the Sands Point/Port Washington line on a map. The one to the north is/was Harbor Acres Beach. Both are gone now, first due to terrible water quality; red tides and shellfish fishing bans etc, And then due to Hurricane Sandy. There is very little left to see. But, with my express permission, go to the Harbor Acres Beach House, about one mile directly west of you. TAKE YOUR CAMERA ALONG. Go onto the veranda under the roof facing the beach. Turn north and look for the two bronze plaques. Read the one about Robert H. Thompson, Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, Valedictorian Class of 1932. Your next stop will be at Webb itself. North of the Seacliff Yacht Club. Then go to the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. It is up by Dosoris Point. Right about at the mouth of Hempstead Harbor. I hear the clammers are back. The shellfish bans have been lifted there, where Mother Nature has made the most progress cleaning away the pollution of the past in Hempstead Harbor. I have even read that one might now even be able to see porpoises and maybe even a whale of two. Show the whole world what a clean environment can do. Take Heart, Lee, things are getting better. And you WILL be part of a bright future on Hempstead Harbor. P.S. Ask Doug Wefer to tell everyone, ON CAMERA, about his College All-American days, His Penguin champion days. Get him to open up. And ask around the Sea Cliff Yacht Club for stories of The Little America's Cup C Class Catamarans. I think you will like the results of your Excellent Adventure. Have fun!!!

What I think about the gust adjust with modification is that the audio after you hoist it and then do some fiddling with the halyard is inaudible, and if you're explaining how to actually use it once all the prior rigging is done I can't make any sense of it. Especially since I can't see the top of the rig, where whatever is happening, is happening.

Dear Lee, thank you very much for all your very comprehensive videos. Watching, I was wondering: is possible to just use a slightly shorter mast instead of the Jens Rig? The reason I am aksing this: when I bought my 1970 sunfish, the former owner also gave me a second mast - one that he broke off once in heavy wind, directly over the deck. So this mast is just a bit shorter, perfectly flat and clean where it broke off.

If I get this right, what the Jens does is let the spars and sail distort to soak up the excess wind energy of a gust, instead of just knocking the boat over. I'm old, fat and stiff from arthritis and I don't race, I only pleasure cruise, and only sail in easy conditions because of that, but I think I might use the Jens as a "safety valve" to lessen the chances I capsize in a random gust before I can sheet-out or bear-off with the rudder. Make sense?

All of these different halyard configurations remind me of the way the Laser used to be rigged. Before the Laser allowed the new vang and outhaul controls, there were all types of innovative rope tricks with thimbles and turning points to add purchase to the rig. It got to the point you had to be a magician to tie all the knots and rig the boat to make it competitive. These different Sunfish halyard configurations remind me of those days. The beauty of the Sunfish is its simplicity. It's a shame you have to rig all this rope origami to make it competitive.
@LeeSideSailing
3 жыл бұрын
Most of the the top stronger sailors don’t need it, however the Jens helps the Sunfish be competitive for a larger RANGE of sailors. For instance the Jens is an extra halyard which allows smaller sailors to compete with larger sailors in higher winds. On the other hand, The ILCA/Laser Radial Sailors can’t compete evenly with a Standard ILCA Sailor and smaller Radial sailors can’t sail in heavier winds without a Radial sail and Radial upper mast. :). In two different recent Sunfish regattas the people who won was about 195 and the second place sailors were 150lbs.

With a super sunfish, you have three built-in adjustments already: the Outhaul, Cunningham, and the Vang. All of which are adjustable. In contrast, the regular Sunfish generally does not allow you to adjust the vang easily on the water. Because the super Sunfish is a cat rig, there is no notion of Jens rig to depower of the super Sunfish sail. One thing I did on my super Sunfish is to remove the main sheet traveler mechanism that takes up the front part of my cubby. I then installed a hockey puck shaped attachment on the lip of the front of the cubby so that I can easily swap out a standard ratchet block, which I use with a normal Sunfish rig with the fiddle block that the super Sunfish mainsheet uses. That way, with a single hull, I can set up either a Sunfish rig or a super Sunfish rig.

Great video. With the LI Jens two halyard setup and a mast cleat, where would each halyard cleat? Seems to me using the Jens halyard as the vang and cleating it only on the deck while cleating the upper halyard only on the mast would provide the most flexibility for on-the-water adjustments. But I've been wrong SO many times in trying to learn the boat/rig, my confidence in this opinion is NOT high. Any help much appreciated!
@LeeSideSailing
3 жыл бұрын
This is a hreat questions as I never seen two halyards using the LI Jens. However it can be done. If doing this yiu have to make sure you use thin lines. As the normal position halyard AND the the LI Jens will have to use the same mast hole. Y would lead everything down, to the bullseye fair lead and cleat everything off on the deck cleat. In my opinion, you can use the Jens alone. I have been doing that for the past 3 years. Some racers (who are better than me, will do regular rig in lighter air). And switch between them. This past weekend, I didn’t do badly in Saratoga tans the wind was between 7-12mph. Hope this helps!

Another question for you Lee but now relating to the Mendleblatt version of the Jens. Could you use the Hankster 2 instead of a clove hitch as the first knot (to the spar) with an excess of 19" beyond the stopper knot that locks the Hankster and then do the additional two turns, tying off the bitter end with a square knot to the running portion of the halyard?

One more question that I think I know the answer to, but want to check -- with the two halyard system -- what are the two preferred line lengths? One is a jens length and the other is the regular length? And what diameter line do you recommend since they both run through the mast?
@LeeSideSailing

The gust adjust shifts the whole sail plan…. Plus it makes the upper part of the boom freer to flex. Because it the Jens position (the pivot point) makes the upper part of the boom longer, bs when it is in original position. The different methods keep the upper boom tight to the mast, yes.

Hi Lee, I sailed with the Mendelblatt Gust Adjust last season and liked it a lot. I'm considering trying the two halyard system to gain more flexibility on the water this season in lighter air. In your two halyard system, which line do you use to tie the vang? Is it the jens? That way as you release the regular halyard, your vang stays on? Do they both cleat to the mast cleat as well? Are you familiar with the Dinghy Shop's version that uses a hanger line as the Jens turning point? The immediate benefit I perceive is it doesn't have two lines running through the mast top, but it seems a bit more complicated than your system. Do you have any other thoughts about that?

Thanks Lee, great overview! What are your halyard thoughts for a heavier sailor light wind sub 10 inland lake sailing? Skip any kind of Jens and push the gooseneck to 12-13 inch to power up? Can you attach the halyard lower on spar to hoist sail higher vertically to power up or does the turbulence you note cancel out that potential gain?

Thanks for the questions. The best sailors do not raise their sail higher. Most if the time. 13-14 is best for a larger sailor and anything shorter than that is a little squirrelly/not balanced. It really depends on some things. The sailor’s size and where they are sailing…. If you are an adult sail in calmer conditions 12 mph and less most of the time you can just go with a regular rig. If you are on the smaller size, then a lasso rig is pretty easy to do. If you’re in a place like Aruba or Paracas where the winds ALWAYS blow mid teens and into the 20s…. 100 percent Jens rig, and tighten up everything you can. Also Place the gooseneck maybe at 16inches if strong enough- through 22”, depending on your size. The gooseneck position is huge to balance the boat.

Yes. Start with sailing normally snd adjust the gooseneck along the boom. If there is no adjuster, it can be adjusted by loosening the screw, moving the gooseneck to desired placement along boom. Then retightening the gooseneck. For most conditions 16-19inches from where the metal boom ends and the plastic end cap begins (the junction). You can go further if you want.
