I like dbPowerAmp for ripping CDs. If it has problems reading the CD, it let’s you know. I buy lots of used CDS, and I was surprised by how many of them had problems. BTW, FLAC is a lossless codec, so the playback of the FLAC file should be as good as the file on the CD, ceteris paribus. I use Apple Lossless, because I use an old version of ITunes to play my tunes.

First of all, HDTracks is where you should go for your digital Hi-Res audio, it's the preferred choice of a lot of Mastering Engineers like Bob Katz for example, whose mastered / remastered over 600 records. Second, why would you buy digital tracks but then get them in 16 bit 44.1 khz? Theres literally no benefit of doing that over buying a physical CD of the same bit rate and sampling rate. You'd buy a digital copy if you were buying Hi-Res audio in 24 bit 96 khz or 192 khz. Though that extra depth in quality wouldnt be captured if you transferred it to a CD, unless you used a Super Audio CD, which does support 24/192 khz, unlike a normal CD which is limited to 16/44.1 khz. By buying CD quality digital files you gain absolutely no benefit whatsoever, but you restrict yourself from being able to sell that music like you could with a used CD, because selling digital files is illegal. The only reason you'd really ever want to do that is if the CD is out of print and getting it is either crazy expensive or impossible to find. Otherwise, it's completely pointless.

What annoys me the most about ripping CDs is that they dont have titles embedded or any information on the album whatsoever. Musicbrainz and mp3tag really help there but still it is a HUGE pain in the ass.
@audioarkitekts

I’ll look into that because the software I use, Exact Audio Copy will download the information from a database upon ripping your CD to the PC, I’ll see why it’s not an easier process for the burning.

@@audioarkitekts Yeah if its available it works, and then its great. But: 1. I still sometimes have to go on the musicbrainz website because the picard software doesnt detect it automatically 2. I’m rather surprised that the burning feature in EAC still works for you. I used it in the past as it’s offered setting the writing offset of the drive for audio CD’s unlike Nero, for example. But a few years later, when I needed to burn a CD after a long time, I was able to burn only in an external drive connected through a USB port, several windows with a writing error popped up when I tried an internal drive. I was told that maybe EAC does not support SATA drives for writing (only ATA), actually it worked flawlessly when we still used older ATA drives, so I thought that might be the issue. However, now I have just external drives (two DVD writers, a DVD/BD combo and a BD writer) and none of them can be used for burning in EAC, I also tried to change all the settings there and nothing helped, it’s really weird.

I know I'm late to the party, but I just recently subscribed to your channel. I've been burning CDs for years from flac files I purchased to make albums I couldn't find the original CDs for. Your tip about Anyburn will simplify my process greatly. One question: what program do you use to print the inserts for the CD case? I didn't see anything listed in the description.

Haven't watched the full video, so I'm not sure why exactly you're printing the inserts. If you're doing it to add it as cover art metadata to your FLAC file, why not just save the high-quality album art from google images results? Or use a program like AutomaTag to automatically do it for you.

@kennethoransky4881

@@CollosalTrollge Depends on which ripping program you use. Most use Exact Audio Copy. Another reason is, when you rip you are hearing the data from a better source. A hard drive is more accurate than a CD drive. A CD player reads the disc at 200 to 500 rpm. It only gets one chance to read the data before it moves on to the next bit of data. If the read is incorrect the player has to error correct the data. This is audible. When ripping, the CD drive gets as much time as it needs to slow down and reread the error part until it's as good as it can get. Plus the error correction is better in the ripping program.

There's lots of cool blank CDs out there. I buy those "vinyl"-top discs as well as all-silver, all-gold, black (record side only), all black, LightScribe, and 90-minute CDRs. There are colored CDs as well, but I have not used those yet. I've been using a different software though - it's flawless, and no secret 3rd-party junk added at installation, and no obnoxious software that takes over all my system's file associations (including icons), like that stupid Nero always does. My only complaint is that I cannot get it to change burning speed. I have found 10x is the most ideal burning speed - not too slow (a 1-hour disc of tunes takes about 6 mins to burn), but slow and steady enough to not cause errors that result is chirps and skips on playback. I had a great burner that somehow had its burning speed set at 10x, but when it died, my next R/RW drive was a little slower at 8x. Discs take a little longer but sound perfect. Other drives refuse to go lower than 12x, which is a bit too fast and errors often result. I'm thinking it has to do with the drives? The software has its own set of "drivers" and the same driver will get different results based solely on the optical drive used. I would never use ANY format if it compresses. WAV is the only way to go... well, AIF/AIFF is a good alternative, as it seems to have the same properties of a WAV (lossless, easily edited, but 10x the file size of an MP3 equivalent at 128kbps ; if the MP3 is 4 MB, the WAV of that same track will be 40 MB), except the added bonus of AIF/AIFF is that it can store the metadata in the files (track info, etc), like MP3s do.
@audioarkitekts
Жыл бұрын
That's interesting with the speed. I do buy the same vinyl discs as well. They are really cool. WAV is great if you have the space and time. I do like FLAC because it's close enough to perfect and I can fit hundreds of albums on a smaller drive.

5:23 Though this is true technically, it also depends. FLAC / ALAC are both lossless just like their uncompressed versions WAV and AIFF, meaning they are bit for bit copies of each other, but FLAC and ALAC are compressed. The reason this is significant is because your computer or phone or whatever has to decompress these compressed files in real time as they are being played back, and if you dont have a great CPU this strain on the CPU along with the other processes its doing can actually create artifacts and change the sound of the track as its being decompressed. Most people will never be able to hear this but for anyone with a very revealing setup, you probably will hear it if your gear is good enough. Storage space is also crazy cheap now so it shouldnt even be an issue. However if you dont have a dedicated audiophile setup and you are strapped for cash and you cant afford to be buying multi-terabyte hard drives, or you're putting these files on your phone or something which has limited space, then just keep them in FLAC / ALAC, but if you do have a good set up and you can afford storage space, then go with WAV / AIFF (AIFF being the better of the two because it can store metadata, i.e Artist, Title, Genre, Album, etc, where as WAV can not.)
