I'm all for getting as much produce as you can out of your growing space, but sometimes less is more.
In this case, the homeowner got a little overly excited and planted about 60 tomatoes. The problem is that they're way too close together even with consistent pruning. These plants will take up a lot of space both above ground but also below.
I like to give tomato plants anywhere from 2 to 4 feet between each plant. This allows the roots to spread out and the plant to vine naturally.
When the plants are too close, they're going to compete with each other for nutrients and water, and they're going to work against each other. The fruits will be smaller and not as good. Limited airflow is also a breeding ground for pests & diseases.
