Harmonic distortion is why you can't get the full 100a. Large dc loads mess with the waveform coming from of the generator and even the grid which creates a feedback loop. If the generator isn't inverter style with low thd you can only load it to 50% with a dc load. Harmonic distortion is also hard on the electronics in the welder also.

What about an AC welder?
@Dark_Knight_USA
2 жыл бұрын
Partly true, yes. Many cheap inverter (switch mode) devices rely on stable input frequency 2 generate voltage. The good 1s self generate / regulate the reference frequency. Most cheap generators cannot maintain frequency as the voltage with increased load. Simply, the switch mode device gets confused resilting in voltage and current variances. Such is why I prefer transformer units.

I have the exact same H-F predator generator. And Amazon adapter. It's a good little setup for ~most~ side jobs. And was relatively inexpensive. some generators come with "high altitude" kits. they have smaller carb jets because the engine not only has less air to work with at higher altitude, but it also becomes WAY too rich which also robs power. so you throw smaller jets in and it at least bring the fuel air ratio closer to where it should be.

Thank YOU for that 4 prong to 3 prong adapter cord !!! I have been trying to figure that out for the past 2 weeks 😅. I have been watching your Arc welding videos and just fixed my tractor mowing deck that had a broken mounting bracket. The welds are ugly as heck but it’s a start. The mower deck is super thin. I was able to use this welder with my Ryobi 6250 generator. It has 2 110v at 20amp receptacle and one 240v at 30amp receptacle. I was concerned that the generator puts out 240V but the welder max voltage is 220V so I was worried that it would damage the welder, but it’s barely over 10% so hopefully it can take the voltage mismatch ok. I got the welder for $103 😂. I’m sure Nov 28 Cyber Monday there will be more coupons or sales for this welder. Love your videos ❤

110V-125V is ‘normal’ 120VAC; they are just numbers. 240V is the same thing as 220V in the USA. My ‘grid’ power is 125.3V AC right this moment which is normal in this area, so the phases are technically ~250VAC. 110V to 125V is 120V “nominal” and what we like to call “220 volt” is 240V nominal. So your concern is really a non-issue.

I run my welder on a generator and it works pretty well. Your setup is pretty close tho. The setup that would work is very limited though. You'll only be able to run a 120v welder on it. For example my Lincoln Le31mp is a 120v 15a plug. Multiply Amps X Volts to get 1800. Now look at the wattage of your generator. That's awfully close to the required juice ro run your welder. If you were to run this on a Predator 9000, it would work because it's got 72500 running watts. That's plenty of power to run something requiring 1800 watts. Also I have a splitter that goes from 240 to 2 120s. This will keep you from tripping your GFCI on your generator.

Hey William! I think it really depends on the particular welder and generator. Some may have electronics that could get damaged from the "dirty power" from some generators. Aside from that, however, I assume that it's usually fine as long as the generator provides adequate power to run the welder. I know a lot of people that run little inverters with generators and they have worked fine for years.

It wouldn’t work well with this generator, because each 120 volt plug is limited to 13 amps. If it is a generator with a 30 amp 120 volt outlet, I think it would work, but as you saw, I’ve been wrong before. 😀

So what generator would I use for my Hobart 140 sir? To get the best highest safe usage for welding?

I have a 12k peak 9600 running watt generator. I can’t weld a thing. Sticks rods like crazy, near impossible to get a stable weld and any amperage. And trying mig it only runs for about a second then the weld stops but the wire feeds like 2 feet on its own. Not sure what I can do. I’m running off the 50amp outlet.

I was a bit surprised that you had no trouble running 6010 on that little inverter welder.

I've actually only run 6011, 6013 and 7018 on it. I think it may struggle with 6010, but I may have to give it a try.
